"Adverse conditions in the hills builds real leaders"- Award Participants conquer Champtang peak in the Himalayas
Temperatures dropped below -7 degrees Celsius at night water turned ice, tents were covered with snow negotiating narrow paths barely more than 2 feet these were the challenges taken by 19 students of Birla High School for Boys on an expedition to Champtang peak (13,500) in Garhwal Himalayas, Uttarakhand. We started our journey from Joshimath to Dhak village by Jeep and trek to our first camp at Kuala. Journey to the second camp at Gulin is much tougher than the first days trek. Temperature started dropping from our third camp at Tally, when it snows throughout the night and water turned ice, hands and feet were numb, but we brave our way to climb mount Champtang. Such trips like this change the attitude of young people.
They become more responsible after facing adverse situations. It also helps builds leadership qualities. 19 student climbed the peak under the able leadership of Joydeep Ghosal and his team from Juniper and special thanks to the Award Leaders Gautam Ghose and Pranab Chakraborty.

Know all about the International Gold Event 2011- Nairobi Kenya

IGE is the International Award Association’s (IAA) premier global youth event that provides opportunities for Gold Award holders to contribute to the development of the Award Programme on a national and international level. It also allows young people to have their say on the International Award Association’s (IAA) governance structures and meet other Gold Awardees from around the world. The IGE will be held in Nairobi and over 150 Gold Award Holders between the ages of 18 -28 from around the world are expected to attend.
Youth Representatives elected at the IGE’s Youth Forum serve on the International Council - the highest decision-making body of the IAA. This gives young people an opportunity to be part of the IAA’s policy making and planning processes, ensuring that they are relevant to young people. Find out more about the current Youth Representatives. IGE 2011 will have past delegates actively involved in the preparation and evaluation of an IGE for the first time. Outcomes from IGE 2011 will be fed directly into the IAA’s 11th International Forum in Malta 2012.
The event will see young people working together to contribute to the development of the Award Programme and share examples of how the Programme serves youth issues and promotes youth development in their country. The young IGE delegates will contribute to both the content and the process, bringing with them their skills, expertise and networks. Young people are key to success of the IGE and to the future of The Award.
IAYP India is now accepting nominations and applications from Gold Award Holders in India for this event. Two Gold Holders with dedication and plan to contribute towards extension of the Award in India will be selected after careful consideration. Please contact the Gold Holders' Desk at the National Office at 011 2649 7154 or email at ai@iayp.in for more information and request for an application form.
