Happiness

Happiness is an inner feeling of contentment and joy. Without this, our life would be empty and dull. Each one has a different meaning of happiness. For some, it would mean making ourselves happy, while for some others it means making others happy. Somebody gets happiness through success, peace of mind, fulfilling one’s own desire, while some others get happiness by helping others in work, or by helping the needy, or any stranger like helping a blind person to cross the road, feeding the hungry, etc.

To be happy one must keep the following points in mind:

  • Know Yourself: If you know - what you want, what you have, how to get anything, then you will be content with what you have and never be sad.
  • Be Empathetic and Understanding Towards Others: If you have qualities like sympathy, empathy, and understanding, then it will be easier to understand others feeling and actions and that will help one to be happy.
  • Help the Needy: When you help those people who are in need of help without their asking, then this gives you happiness as you realize that your little help can bring your smile to another face.
  • Caring and Sharing: By sharing and caring for your family, relatives and friends you can get happiness as your close ones are happy then you automatically become happy.
  • Love Everyone and Learn to Forgive and Forget: If you love everyone you will never have hatred in your heart. If someone hurts and you forgive them, then there is no chance of bitter feeling coming in your mind and heart, so you will always be happy.
  • Praise Yourself and Others: Whenever you do something good then praise yourself and also celebrate it. In the same manner, if others do something good for you, praise them. This will give you happiness.

If you follow the above steps then you are sure to happy in your life.

A Letter To My New Principal

IMPORTANCE OF ORGANIC FARMING

Food is one of the basic needs of us but we are not bothered about the quality of it. We do not know what are the harmful chemicals or adulterants present in it. These all lead to biological magnification followed by many diseases. So this is the right time to turn towards nature.

Organic farming is a method of agriculture in which farmers avoid the use of chemical fertilisers, pesticides, hormones etc. Instead of these, they use crop residues, animal manures, leaves of plants, off-farm organic waste to the maximum extent. Scientific methods like mixed cropping, crop rotations and biological system of nutrient mobilisation and plant protection are applied for maximum yield.
Nowadays we are seeing a rise in organic farming, as it is the need of the hour. Consumers are becoming highly conscious about their health and the food they consume. More and more people are opting for organic food to avoid the consumption of food that is grown by using chemical ways.

Unfortunately, there are many farmers who aim the profit only. In order to yield early and abundant produce, many farmers in the rural areas have been using chemical fertilisers, pesticides and hormone applications. It is due to the lack of knowledge. But this is gradually changing as more farmers are choosing the organic route. There are some people who have decided to venture into this field, either by producing or supporting farmers to yield fresh and unadulterated produce that is healthy for consumption. Also, with more number of people preferring to consume organic food, and with the number of organic e-commerce stores popping up in various cities, it seems like people are moving towards the right direction.

It is very important to make all people aware of the dangerous impact of consumption of food items available in markets. Our government should do something to promote organic farming. Organic farming communities should conduct various workshops on cultivation methods, pest management and long-term benefit of going the organic way by showing the sustainability of these practices. Organic farmers should encourage other farmers to visit their farm and learn about their best way of cultivation. So let’s take some initiatives to promote best practices for all of us.

Is Your Child Ready To Face The World?

Parenting is a very complex skill.  Good parenting requires constant adaptation to the fast-changing world. In today's world, a child's time is occupied by various activities along with many distractions like gadgets which keeps the child busy and the parent's hectic job schedules leave very less time for positive communication between a child and the parents.

Dr Anupam Sibal, a paediatrician and a Group Medical Director of Apollo Hospitals Group has very effectively shown the approach to parenthood. Dr Sibal has shown the hands-on approach to focus on different values and qualities to instil in a child.

Different traits of personalities are very beautifully explained in different chapters of this book through examples of Sachin Tendulkar, Mahatma Gandhi, Bill Gates, Stephen Hawking, Ratan Tata and the likes. Some examples of ordinary people with extraordinary qualities are also worth reading.

This book is a great help to parents as well as teachers. It deals in an effective way of bringing up a child from infancy to adulthood with a proper emotional and intellectual development. This book shows how inspiring icons, world events and personal success stories can be used to communicate with the child about the various values that every parent feel should be inculcated in a child.

As a mother and a teacher, this book has enriched me with some great parenting skills and has redefined my approach towards parenthood.

Humility

Humility is a virtue that everyone should possess. Educators need to be humble if they want their students to listen to them. In our human life when we have something immediately pride, vanity and many other undefined forces enter into us. We extol ourselves to the skies. We feel that we are the superior most. We start looking down on our fellow beings and also many times hurt their feelings.

Have you ever seen a tree? When the tree is in full bloom laden with fruits it always bows down to offer you its fruits. The whole tree stands upright due to its roots which firmly go deep down in the earth. This is the humbleness which we human beings should show. There have been many great men like Mr George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, etc who even after attaining a high post were very humble. They never had a speck of pride in them and this was their greatness.

Ms Bharti Rao narrating the
story to the children at School
Kings like Harishchandra have been so humble that to fulfil the oath of a sage, he left his kingdom and separated from his wife and child. When pride diminishes and disappears humility increases and looms large. An educator should always remember and understand the fact that one may know a great deal, but one may not know everything. One needs to possess the value of humility and should be willing to learn from others whether they be their students, parents or colleagues

The pursuit of humility once we properly understand, yields to better relationships and faster growth. You should always treat everyone with respect irrespective of their age, job and that he is as worthy and important as oneself. An effective teacher is one who is a humble person. I end this article by quoting the words of Sir Chinmoy “The strength of Pride must eventually surrender to the power of humility.”

Leverage research on curriculum and professional learning to fulfill the vision of PLCs

By Stephanie Hirsh
Executive Director, Learning Forward

Perhaps you've seen our recent blogs calling on professional learning communities (PLCs) to anchor their work in the deep study of their curriculum and instructional materials. At Learning Forward, we have always been explicit about the importance of focusing professional learning on the outcomes we expect for students and their teachers.

Now, a growing body of research shows that high-quality curricula in the hands of effective teachers have a positive impact on student learning. In the face of that compelling research, we believe that even more deliberate and intentional attention to a curriculum-driven agenda contributes to an aligned and coherent professional learning system.

The Standards for Professional Learning define the elements critical to professional learning that produces results for students and teachers. They are grounded in a theory of change that connects the elements to advances in educator knowledge and skills; changes in educator practice; and finally, improvements in student learning. Focusing the work of PLCs on curriculum and instructional materials leverages the very best of what the standards guide us to do.

Critical to implementing high-performing PLCs are the Learning Communities, Leadership, and Resources standards. Establishing an expectation that PLCs anchor school learning sets a foundation to ensure alignment, collective responsibility, and continuous improvement. Effective leadership at the system, school, and team levels ensures that teams have the materials, schedule, and support they need to do the work that is most important.

The breadth of work that a PLC is able to undertake is correlated to the resources allocated it, the most important of which is time. If a PLC is given only an hour a week to convene, the depth of its collaborative study and problem-solving is much more limited than that of a team provided the recommended three to four hours per week.
Given each unique setting, PLCs pull from curriculum units, scope, and sequences, and lessons to understand and identify the outcomes that determine how success will be measured for each cycle of learning. A cycle of learning can be planned for a course of study (e.g. themes, units, lessons) or a period of time (e.g. semester, quarter, six weeks). These decisions are related to several factors, including the time the team will have to work together.

Throughout the cycle, the team is regularly grounding its work in the curriculum and instructional materials. The cycle begins with determining outcomes and examining data to determine the greatest needs and opportunities for achieving them. Data let the team know where their students are in relation to these outcomes. Team members look at educator and student data so they can better understand where students may struggle and where additional support will be needed.
Studying the curriculum and the data leads team members to answer the question: What are priorities for student and educator learning? Educators will return to the data throughout the cycle as they monitor and assess the impact of their decisions and practices on their students.

Following this process, PLC members write and enact a learning design that will enable them to answer their questions and achieve their learning goals. A learning design grounded in curriculum and instructional materials focuses learning on the content of materials, refinement of lessons and assessments to meet unique student contexts and needs, and rehearsal with any materials team members want to fine-tune before using with students.

This stage is followed by implementation of the refined lessons and teachers' planned assessments. During this stage, PLC members find other ways to support the transfer of new learning into their classrooms. They may choose to observe others implement first, co-teach with a colleague, or invite a coach to provide feedback on their instruction.
As part of the cycle of learning, they begin monitoring and reflecting on their practice and its impact. They look for opportunities to improve as well as preserve what works well. They understand that this is a continuous improvement process. Someday, they will return to this unit. Having thorough notes so they can know what to do next time will be very important for maintaining momentum.

The Standards for Professional Learning can be similarly applied to other important changes and programs a state or school system is trying to undertake. They can be used as the foundation for initiating a statewide leadership academy or implementing a new behavior management program across a system or school.

Combining the long-standing research that undergirds the standards with the compelling research that is emerging about curriculum offers substantive guidance and opportunities to fulfill the promise of professional learning communities.

Watch for the release of the Learning Forward white paper High-Quality Curricula and Team-Based Professional Learning: A Perfect Partnership for Equity, which focuses on integrating professional learning and high-quality curriculum and instructional materials.

This post originally appeared in Learning Forward's PD Watch.

Leadership

Leadership is an important core value to be inculcated in the students by the team of Educators in schools, so as to make leaders and not followers of the society and the nation.  The most important aspect of a leader is to guide and direct others to reach a common goal i.e. to lead a team, group, community, religion, organisation or a country. It is often said that leaders are born but some become by choice or circumstances, which means everyone has a hidden potential to be a leader – all one needs is an appropriate opportunity, a vision, the ability to dream and the determination to realize the dream and to achieve the set goal.

The various qualities a leader should have can be summed up as – a leader should be a good thinker – he should be able to think new ideas, create a vision and find out means of fulfilling them. Next, the leader should believe in teamwork, take out time to listen to the views and ideas of others and accept the ideas that are suitable for the mission, this makes him a good listener also. Then he will be able to plan out the strategies and allocate different tasks to different teammates according to their abilities and training and then keeps an eye on the progress of the work and keep motivating his teammates, which does not mean that he does not do anything himself but make others do, instead he leads by example and is a role model for others.
A good leader is a tireless worker, with endless energy and has qualities like- simplicity, humility and compassion. They are people who resist temptations, follow rules and regulations and show exemplary discipline of body and soul. Leadership is practised not so much in words as in attitude and in actions.

Leadership is practised not so much in words as in attitude and in actions.
