Ishu Chauhan: Caring

ClipartPanda.Com
Caring is a good trait to have. What is caring? Caring is when you do a good deed for someone because it is the right thing to do. When you care for someone, you make a difference in the world with kindness. I believe that caring for others is wonderful and noble.
The experience that stands out for me about caring was when my mother had a severe backache. It was in 2011, she had a severe pain in her back and because of that, she was unable to do any household chores. I used to help her in going to the washroom, taking bath etc. At that time I was in Ahmedabad and was having my board exams. It was the time when I understood that what does caring for others means.  As she continued to recover, I was always there for her.
I was filled with joy knowing that I helped my mother. I was really proud of doing that because it was a way to care for others. Caring goes beyond taking care of family members and friends. Caring is being compassionate and supporting people as they go through tough times. Caring is helping others at the time of needs. Caring is a good trait for everyone to have and the world will be a better place if we care for one another. So let’s find out a few moments of caring for others, that will become great moments for them.

  1. Happy School!
What comes to your mind when you think of a happy school? Recollect your school days… the flash of your classroom, school friends, play time, activities come to one’s mind. Very recently my school senior came to meet us and then chapters of school mischief opened, we all shared a hearty laugh on those days gone by, those happy days. One point came up in that discussion and that was how our teachers loved us, though at that time they pretended they were angry, they were disappointed by our mischief, but by their honest discussions they demonstrated their true feeling, they loved us and cared for us. The feeling of acceptance by the teachers, for who we are and helping us to reach our potential is what a student expects. And once that relationship is built, a path for a happy child, leading to a happy teacher, eventually leading to a happy school is set.

Role of teacher is so important in making the school a happy school. For whatever reason a person takes up this profession (not the first choice for majority…), once you are in, there is a need to transform your attitude and approach. Just taking your teaching profession as a job, will only lead to unsatisfactory results. Teaching is a profession, it is said “Teachers touch future.” Your words become their inner voice. Think about, each time your student did not complete the work, or misbehaved, did not perform well… comment on the action and not on the student. Show empathy. You will see the transformation as I saw in one of my students. A student 13-14-year-old was brought to my office for hitting another child by the class teacher, teacher kept yelling and blaming the child how he is always into such acts and some severe action should be taken. I asked the teacher to go back to her class and asked the boy to sit down and calm himself. I started talking to him saying “I understand it not just your fault, other boy must be at fault too.” Just this sentence and tears start rolling down the cheek of the boy as he was expecting that here too he will be blamed for his mistake. Then I asked him to reflect, what happened and why it happened. He very honestly admitted and reflected. He accepted, he could not control his anger and hit, but immediately he also accepted that a wrong way to react. He promised he will make effort to bring change in his attitude and behaviour. After that incident, there was no complain about that student. I also enquire about his behaviour from other teachers and all agreed there is such a positive change in him. I observed his smile each time I saw him in school corridor, that smile was of change, smile of inner happiness. As an educator our role is to bring change in child’s behaviour, not just external but internal transformation. A happy student gave happiness to a teacher… happy student… happy teacher… happy school.

As educators, be a source of happiness, you will receive happiness!!
