ASSIGNMENT NO. 3- Case Study: Using Productive Failure to Help Class 2 Students Understand Multiplication

Introduction

While teaching multiplication in Class 2, I noticed that many students were confused. They mixed multiplication with repeated addition and simple counting. Instead of correcting them immediately, I used productive failure, an approach suggested by Dr. Manu Kapur, where students are encouraged to try, make mistakes, and explore first. This initial struggle helped them develop curiosity and a deeper understanding.

Initial Confusion: Productive Failure Stage

When I wrote examples like 3 × 4 on the board, students:

  • counted all number one by one

  • confused multiplication with addition

  • did not understand the idea of “equal groups”

I allowed them to attempt solutions without giving them a ready-made method. Their mistakes became productive learning opportunities, not barriers.

Hands-On Learning: Turning Confusion into Understanding

To make multiplication concrete, I used rajma seeds.

Activity: Making Equal Groups

For 3 × 4, I asked students to make 3 groups and put 4 seeds in each group.
They tried, failed, rearranged seeds, discussed, and finally discovered:
“Multiplication means equal groups of the same size.”

They also connected it to repeated addition:

  • 3 × 4 = 4 + 4 + 4

Hands-on exploration changed abstract numbers into something they could see and touch.

Storytelling: Making Multiplication Meaningful

I used a story: Rina and the Chocolate Packets.
“Rina had 3 packets. Each packet had 4 chocolates.”
Students helped Rina find the total using seeds and drawings.

They said excitedly:

  • “Ma’am, it is 3 packets of 4!”

  • “This is multiplication!”

The story reduced fear and increased excitement.

Discovering Properties of Multiplication

Through activities and stories, students experienced multiplication properties instead of memorizing them.

Commutative Property

  • 3 × 4 and 4 × 3 were modeled with seeds; students saw that the totals were the same.

Multiplication as Repeated Addition

  • 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 → 3 × 4 = 12

Multiplying by 0 and 1

  • No chocolates in packets → 3 × 0 = 0

  • One packet keeps the same total → 5 × 1 = 5

They discovered these properties naturally through play and manipulation.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the lesson, students were able to:

  • explain multiplication in their own words

  • make equal groups using objects

  • connect multiplication with repeated addition

  • understand and use multiplication properties

  • show enthusiasm instead of confusion

Distracted learners became active participants, eager to try.

Conclusion

This experience showed me that productive failure, combined with hands-on learning and storytelling, greatly supports Class 2 students’ understanding of multiplication. Allowing children to struggle first, talk, try, and correct themselves led to deeper and more joyful learning. They learned that mistakes are not failures — they are steps toward mastery.

ASSIGNMENT NO. 4- Case Study: Enhancing Understanding of Plants Through Multimedia and Hands-On Activities

I taught the topic “Plants and Their Parts” using PPT, videos, real plants, and a simple experiment. Initially, students could name parts of a plant but were confused about their functions and minute features such as veins in leaves and transpiration.

Teaching Approach

  • I first used a PPT to show labelled diagrams of roots, stems, leaves, and flowers.

  • Then I showed a short video explaining how water moves through plants and how transpiration occurs.

  • Students then observed real plants and leaves, touching and examining veins and stems closely.

Finally, I demonstrated transpiration by tying a plastic bag around a leafy branch. After some time, water droplets appeared inside the bag.

Student Learning

Students were able to:

  • identify plant parts and state their functions

  • observe minute details like veins in leaves

  • explain transpiration in simple words

  • stay engaged through hands-on experience

Conclusion

Using PPTs, videos, real plants, and experiments turned confusion into clarity. Students learned by seeing, touching, and doing, which increased curiosity and understanding of plant structure and transpiration.

ASSIGNMENT NO. 5- Teaching Non-standard and Standard Units of Measurement in Class 2

While teaching measurement in Class 2, I introduced the concepts of non-standard units (handspan, footstep, paper clips, blocks) and standard units (centimetre, metre). At first, the children were confused. They measured the same object with different results and did not understand why the answers were changing.

Instead of directly correcting them, I used learning by doing with real-life examples.

Classroom Activities

  • Students measured the length of the table using their handspans.

  • They measured the classroom floor using footsteps.

  • They compared answers and noticed they were not the same.

This led them to realise that hand sizes and footsteps are different. From this discovery, I introduced the idea of standard units such as the ruler, scale, and metre tape.

Next, students measured the same objects again using:

  • ruler

  • measuring tape

They observed that the answers were now the same for everyone.

Real-Life Connections

I discussed examples such as:

  • a tailor using a measuring tape

  • a doctor measuring height

  • a shopkeeper measuring cloth

These situations helped children understand why standard units are important in daily life.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the lesson, students were able to:

  • differentiate between non-standard and standard units

  • explain why non-standard units give different answers

  • measure objects correctly using a ruler or tape

  • connect measurement with real-life situations

Conclusion

Through learning by doing and real-life examples, students’ confusion turned into clarity. Hands-on measurement experiences helped them understand why standard units are needed, making the concept meaningful and enjoyable.

Honesty and Respect - Amit Jugran

As I narrate this incident from a few decades back, it brings back the memories of the fine moments carefully carving the future steps of an adolescent.

We all have been involved in some form of malpractice at some stage of our lives. Probably more susceptible at an age when peer pressure is high, and fake pride is at stake—the chemical reaction within playing havoc and giving very little room for reasoning.

Mathematics was never my cup of tea, and I dreaded the books, class and of the teacher. I had somehow managed to tackle the book and the embarrassing moments in the class, but not the teacher. He too had taken an instant liking to me I guess, as I had become his favourite punching bag over a period of time. I was getting tired of his sarcasm and frankly waited for every class to end sooner.

Trigonometry and I had a very confusing relationship. But we were taking time to understand each other. I was confident that this topic would save me from the bouts of sarcasm thrown at me. I was sure I would be able to sail through due to this topic. However, the next mathematics test was to test many of us. Little was I to know that it would be testing my Mathematics teacher, my Housemaster and the ethos of the renowned public school. Grappling with the last answer and struggling with time, I requested my friend to bail me out with the last question.

The day of the result arrived, and as the teacher distributed the papers back, I heard my name being called out. With a know all look over his face and the confidence of snaring his prey spread across, he questioned my honesty in solving the last question. The question brought forward no response from my end as I could smell a rat too!

Soon I was going through a sermon on honesty and integrity. I could, in fact, envision my mathematics teacher as Gandhi, convincing me to tread the path of righteousness. Thought-provoking examples were thrown at me, and I bit the bait when I was told that “Honesty would be respected, and consequences would not be worked upon”. As I began to own up, I could see the Gandhi avatar taking back the shape of my mathematics teacher again. The skin, colour, demeanour changed in a fraction of a second, and the paper with “Yellow Card Recommended” (Yellow Card - YC - was the highest punishment given to an offender, this was handed down by the Headmaster of the school) was handed over to me as my reward for being an honest cheater.

Feeling, confused, humiliated and fooled, I walked down the staircase to inform my Housemaster. I had got into trouble before, but it had never been in this way. I was worried as I knew that my Housemaster would tolerate a trouble maker but not a cheat. I mustered up my courage and handed over the paper with my fate scribbled across. There was no hint of anger, despair or dejection on his face. He read the note, and his eyes searched my face for the truth. Probably an experience gained over a period of time. 

“Did you do it and did you admit to the mistake you made?”; was the only question. It came as straight as his straight drive we had seen. I explained and confessed to cheating and also that I had admitted to doing it publicly too.

The paper was taken, the matter was never heard of again. I went on to make more mistakes, but I never cheated after that. The mirror of my mistakes was never shown to me, and neither he rubbed it in to make me feel small. My every mistake was dealt with differently, and I was held accountable for the present. 

In a day, I witnessed two very different approaches. One teacher, who could not walk the talk and the other who gave another chance to reform me. One who was ready to punish me for my honesty and the other who respected me for being brave enough to admit my mistake. 

Maybe the story would have been different for me; today had my Housemaster not searched for the truth on my face and had gone on to believe the paper.

Such is my HM, whom I deeply respect...Mr RP Devgan.

Need of an hour - update the curriculum of Mathematics and club it with the Logical Reasoning according to the Grade

There seems to be general agreement that the number of students who fail to get a genuine grasp of Mathematics is much greater than it should be, there seems to be confusion about the sources of the difficulty. Some blame the situation primarily on the inadequacy of the teachers and the educators; others blame it on the inadequacy of the mathematics curriculum.

Consequently, no one is in a good position to tell those who teach mathematics what to teach or how to teach it. Most teachers appear to conduct their classes without benefit of any theory whatever their instructions is unimaginatively tied to the textbooks and their chief concern is to “cover the ground” regardless of how the students may respond to the material presented.


An encouraging aspect of the general picture recently came into existence were various groups of Educators and Teachers have become actually aware of the plight of Mathematics education and hence are taking positive actions and are looking towards a remedy. NCERT (National Council of Education Research and Training) has successfully announced that the revision of the entire curriculum along with the books will be done by 2023. This is needed so as to achieve a better understanding of how children acquire mathematical concepts. 


In spite of a large number of books and material published on mathematical education, little is provided and is implemented by the students and the teachers. It is important to shed light on the ways in which mathematics actually can be taught along with keeping in mind the discrimination between the fact and fancy ways.


Many students who are apparently capable of doing well in Mathematics course fail to do so. However, there is a paucity of the experimental evidence on the cause of the student dropout and on the origins within the learner of unnecessary failures or incompetence in Mathematics. 


Teachers particularly in the elementary school, have comparatively little training in Mathematics and many of them know very little about the subject which makes it very difficult to know till what extent this deficiency is reflected in the competence of the student and hence slowly starts losing the interest. 

There is a very big question mark on the reason for the dropout, unnecessary failure and incompetence in Mathematics of the student. To deal with this, the elementary and the secondary school curriculum along with the pedagogy necessarily needs to be updated which will later help us in dealing with the dropout and failures. 

The subject matter to be taught should be decided according to the grade placement of the topics and the readiness of the learner. It should be mandatory and hence should be in-built in the new curricula to have experimental classes as well, where the teacher should teach their students how to connect Mathematics with the Real-life problems/applications. 


Mathematics whether on the elementary or the secondary level should be taught in a way that instead of dropping out, our country aims at having as many Mathematicians as possible as no field is complete without Mathematics.


The new course of study for teachers, new teaching methods and new curricula should be such so as to cover the entire syllabus of the competitive exams (Logical Reasoning) along with the syllabus of each grade.  If this could successfully be implemented and executed, the decrease in dropouts can be achieved. 

The main reason for the dropout in the elementary and the secondary level is lack of interest in Mathematics as it was never made interesting by the teachers and educators for their students. Every teacher is always caught up in completing the syllabus and evaluating the answer sheets and every student is always busy in practising the same not by the choice but due to the pressure of scoring marks.

To conclude I would like to say
If our new curriculum is designed so as to club the competitive syllabus (Olympiads like IMO, RMO, NTSE, KVPY) in the form of Logical Reasoning along with the syllabus, it would not at all be difficult for the students to crack any exam whether it would be at the school level or any high-level competitive exam as students always lack in the reasoning section and if we prepare our students for the same right from the elementary level- it won’t be difficult neither for the student to CRACK IT nor for the teacher to TEACH IT!
