Thoughtfulness and Understanding - Kirti Bisht

A thoughtful person knows what other people want, need or feel and try not to upset them. Being considerate or thoughtful towards others makes one a great human being. You really feel content and peaceful when you think about others above yourself. It does not require much skill, just a deep thought before you act or do something and realise how your actions affect the other person. Be it leaving your seat for an old person in the bus, helping someone who finds it difficult to cross the road, offering food to a child who is begging or turning off the tap you find on the road just to save water- it all requires thoughtfulness. While doing all this does not require much effort, skill or energy, it surely will make a difference in society!

Understanding is the synonym of thoughtfulness. One cannot be thoughtful without being understanding. They are the two sides of the same coin. Being understanding help us predict what people might feel in a certain situation. It means taking a look at a situation from another’s point of view. As there are different personality types, circumstances, situations, so it’s hard to know exactly how two different people will react to the same environment. Being understanding doesn’t involve much. It only takes opening your heart to appreciate what someone feelings or experiences.

To understand what understanding is, someone has rightly said:

“Walk a mile in my shoes!”

Humility and Appreciation - Triumph DGS

A HUMBLE STUDENT IS BETTER THAN A PROUD TEACHER

Being a teacher sometimes we start considering ourselves as the owner of the students. We are filled with a feeling of arrogance and insolence while treating them. On the other hand, a humble student will never react to this unexpected behaviour of a teacher.

Sujata was rebuked by me for reporting on time for the rehearsal of the play. So annoyed, I was that I did not let her enter into the hall. The anger and bitterness she faced from me that day brought tears to her eyes but she did not utter a single word. The period got over and I carried on with the usual routine.

The next day I was informed by one of my co-teachers that Sujata’s name has been recommended for the Uttarakhand Natya Academy.

The meetings for the same had been going on in the principal’s office for the last few days. This was the reason for her not reporting on time to me. Realizing my mistake, without delay I went to her in the field. The moment she saw me, she rushed toward me and hugged me. “This is just because I have an amazing teacher like you, ma’am,” she said,

“Thank you for always guiding me, I dedicate this award to you”  I was speechless.

HUMBLENESS HELPS YOU EARN APPRECIATION

This virtue of HUMILITY in her earned all the APPRECIATION from me. The appreciation for her for being so modest, for not boasting about the recognition she was to get.

I shared the entire incident in the class and motivated to be like that all her life. She was valued and appreciated by her class mates also for her humbleness.

Today Sujata is a theatre artist and performs all over the world. She is renowned, famous, rich but most important still ‘HUMBLE’ and ‘APPRECIATED’ more for this than anything else.

Responsibility commands Cooperation- Medley DGS

“Be Responsible” is something we all have been hearing since childhood. It is one of the first few expectations laid upon us from our parents. "at-least take responsibility of your stuff" “be responsible, you are not a kid anymore” and so on, yet it takes ages to understand the simple meaning of this word.

This year, on Teacher’s day Facebook was full of lovely messages filled with gratitude from students all across the globe for their teacher’s right from primary school to college. One of the messages was, “What I am today is because of my teacher.” It filled me with awe and respect for my profession even more. Then, suddenly a thought struck me and scared me to the core. What about the ones who are in jails, criminals who never got caught, the rapists and murderers, the corrupt bribe takers? Did none of them go to the school and if the answer is NO. Is it not true for them “What I am today is because of my teacher”?

When I asked this to myself, I understood the meaning of responsibility. To be responsible, means to take responsibility of your words, actions, behavior, thoughts and their consequences. That means, my responsibility is not limited to my work, but its result and how this result is impacting other lives. In this sense a teacher’s actual performance will be reflected not with the success of her students but with the development of the society as a whole. But what can I do all alone? This thought put me into a pause. Which got cleared when Sugandha shared her experience, that how one child of her class influenced others.

After hearing her I remembered the famous quote of Mahatma Gandhi “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. And now I know that I just need to take the responsibility and will eventually get cooperation from others as Responsibility commands Cooperation.

Anubhuti has beautifully captured this video which speaks for itself.

We all have our own stories of this understanding and insight, Kirti had her realization during lockdown when she thought, “it’s a matter of one or two months and after that everything will be okay then I'll be back to the school and will resume the teaching the way I was doing it before.” But when the situation became grave then she took the responsibility of teaching her students through online classes. Which initially was very difficult for her but slowly and gradually with the cooperation from everyone she handled the situation, even the kids became her support system as they too cooperated and enjoyed this new system of learning, now it's been a year that she is able to take the classes efficiently and effectively.

Rudrani realized her full potential when she took the responsibility of looking after foreign delegates during her university seminar. Overcoming her nervousness and under confidence, she not only fulfilled her responsibilities but also enjoyed doing that, and she got support and appreciation from everyone.

Chandralekha in one of her science class divided the class into four groups and asked each group to prepare a quiz for the other three groups. This exercise became such fun among kids; they not only referred their books but also searched the internet to be creative and innovative with their questions. All the group members cooperated and came up with amazing questions. What a beautiful depiction of responsibility and cooperation shown by young children.

In Mamta’s words:-

World Braille Day - Kusum Sharma

Courtesy: thelocalchoice.co.za
World Braille Day is celebrated on 4th January since 2019, is observed to raise awareness of the importance of Braille as a means of communication in the full realization of the human rights for blind and partially sighted people.

What is Braille?
Braille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number, and even musical, mathematical and scientific symbols. Braille (named after its inventor in 19th century France, Louis Braille) is used by blind and partially sighted people to read the same books and periodicals as those printed in a visual font.

Braille is essential in the context of education, freedom of expression and opinion, as well as social inclusion, as reflected in Article 2 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
I would like to quote the words of Armistead Maupin 'Like I've always said, love wouldn't be blind if the braille weren't so damned much fun.'
