A fearful and Impatient Student: Saumya RPKM

What is fear?

Fear is a powerful and primitive human emotion which alerts us to the presence of danger. It is the good side of fear but on the other side, too much fear can harm self-confidence, it can prevent from achieving heights of success by destroying reality or being grounded in false beliefs.

A fearful and impatient student

There was a child in my class who used to stammer. He found it impossible to participate in any competition like poem recitation or elocution etc. When he stammered, he got anxious and when he got anxious he stammered even more. He used to sit still in the corner, knowing all the answers and just watching other kids— never participating in the activities. He also never participated in any conversations for fear that he might stammer.

He was known as a good listener, but the fact was he just avoided talking because he knew what would happen if he spoke. I observed him for a few days to know the reason behind his behaviour: why he was so shy or different from others?

One fine day, I got to know about his stammering issue. I started talking to him, being friendly with him but he didn't involve himself much. It didn't stop me from encouraging him. I used to encourage him and provide him with chances to speak so he could regain his confidence.

It took time but his stammering lessened which boosted his confidence. Through encouragement, he got the courage and strength to face his fear and regain his lost confidence. In the teaching profession, we see these kinds of children who are struggling with speech issues. But with patience and consistency, teachers can help them.

Advice to educators: As an educator, I and my group would like to suggest-

  1. Teachers should deal with these kinds of children (lack of confidence, shyness etc.) with calmness.
  2. Teachers should encourage children by giving them as many chances as possible.
  3. Teachers should teach them the attitude of never giving up in difficult or frightening situations (like exams, competitions etc).
  4. Teachers should boost children's morale so they can stand up on their feet firmly (without hesitation).

"Courage is the Power of the mind to overcome fear" - Martin Luther King JR.

Patience is the art of concealing your impatience.

In the past, I encountered an impatient student who was eager to move ahead with the lesson. To address their restlessness, I took a moment to talk with the student privately after class. I listened attentively to their concerns and empathised with their desire for more challenging material.

I acknowledged their enthusiasm for learning and explained that while I understood their feelings, it was crucial to ensure that all students grasp the foundational concepts before progressing.

To keep the student engaged, I promised to explore more advanced topics in the near future and encouraged them to take an active role in class discussions.

This way, they could contribute their knowledge and potentially spark deeper conversations. By validating the student's eagerness and providing a plan for future learning, I aimed to channel their impatience into positive motivation for academic growth.

Patience is the skill to accept or tolerate delay without becoming annoyed or anxious and without responding in disrespect or anger.

Experience has taught me, that we undo ourselves through impatience.

Humility - Manisha Deora

Courtesy: fordhaminstitute.com

Humility is the state of being humble. It is a virtue. It is the quality of keeping one’s self under control. It is the opposite of being proud. A person who possesses this quality is humble and meek. A humble person is the master of himself. He is not stubborn. He is ready to accept other people’s advice and learn from their experience. He is not annoyed with anybody. A proud person gets angry easily when something offends him.

A humble person does not get angry easily. He admits his mistakes and shortcomings politely. A proud person does not admit his faults easily. He gets annoyed and blames others for his own mistakes. A proud person is stubborn and angry. He does not value another person’s suggestions and ideas. We must make our children humble in life because it spreads harmony among people. Humility makes a person more sensitive to understand other situations. So first we have to be humble towards children if we want them to be humble with others.

Better Parenting - Punita Chouhan

“Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person's character lies in their own hands.”

Being a parent is tough. Most of us feel like we could do better jobs, but resolving to be more patient rarely works. When children are growing up, positive parenting improves their cognitive, social and problem-solving skills. Positive parenting also affects their responses and helps them grow up to be better humans.

The first step to being a better parent is actually how we treat ourselves, we can only give what we have.  The first and foremost responsibility is mindfulness. Mindfulness means that it brings your conscious attention to our experiences. Awareness allows you to choose your response to what’s happening. We can regulate our emotions by being mindful.

It necessitates considerable parental attention and participation, letting children know you are watching their behaviour, raising the bar in terms of expectations as appropriate, and making clear and fair rules for the children.

Being Polite - Jitendra Suthar

I would like to share a small story. There were two students in a class, who were totally different from each other. One was a polite child and the other one was mischievous with his own group. This group once decided to create some nuisance in class and started troubling others. All other students started responding in some or the other way, only there was one child in the class who was very calm and polite to this group. As they increased troubling him more, he responded to them more politely. Everyone tried to annoy that kid, but no one succeeded in annoying him. Self-realization in the best we can do if we make some mistake. The same thing happened with that group. They realized that they were wrong and finally felt sorry for that nuisance.

From the above story, we get to know that, No matter what are the circumstances in front of us. We should always face it politely. Remember Father of our Nation “Mahatma Gandhi” who always said, “Even if anyone comes and slaps you, don’t raise your hand rather show him the other side of your face”. Being polite is the best value, asset and weapon to tackle any situation.

When we get into some trouble or face some problem. We have the tendency to look for the person who is calm and polite in any condition. So that we can share our thoughts and take some advice. The same way others will also look to us when we will stay polite to everyone. No one can do anything wrong to you until and unless you do it for others. It is better to wear a smile and avoid misconceptions.
