Tiny Bridge Challenge – A K2 Experiment in Productive Failure - Bhawna Jalan

In our K2 class, we tried a very small experiment to see if struggling before teaching can help children learn better.

The Challenge:
Children were shown two chairs with a gap between them and a toy car. The task was simple: “Build a bridge so  the car can cross without falling.” At first, the children worked in pairs for five minutes without any instructions. Many bridges fell down. Some children stacked blocks in a tall tower, some made only one side, and some gave up quickly.

The Turning Point:
After this, I gathered the class and asked: “What happened when your bridge fell? What can we change?” Then I showed one small idea — making the base wider and supporting both sides.

Second Try:
The children went back to build again. This time, most bridges held the car! Children added more supports, used tape,  and tried different shapes.

Evidence Collected:
Before the tip, only 3 out of 18 bridges worked. After the tip, 12 out of 18 bridges held the car. A child explained, “It worked because I made two big walls and put blocks across.”

Takeaway:
When children were first allowed to struggle, they explored more ideas. After a short teaching moment, they could apply the idea better and explain why their bridges worked. This small classroom experiment shows how Productive Failure can be applied even with 5–6-year-olds. Instead of just theory, the activity gave us real data, quotes, and photos that can be shared and repeated by other teachers.

We ❤️ Poetry with Brinda Ghosh - 6th March 2025

#ThoughtfulThursdays @ My Good School

Poetry sessions on Thursdays focus on listening to and appreciating poetry as a form of art. Poetry for pleasure and enjoyment, poetry as a stress buster and poetry to improve your own lifestyle- is the motive!

The session on 7March’25, focussed on Ballads and the difference between Ballads and Narrative poems. While a short time was spent on understanding the nuances of  a Ballad, most of the session was utilised to make participants realise that poetry is an outcome of our own reflections and is sponataneous. Some personal compositions were shared by Saloni, Nibratti & Neena. The highlight was Oshi our Intern sharing her creation!

Sandeep had rightly impressed upon teachers from GSA schools to join the session for their growth as teachers and so we hit a century- we had 102 participants!

Brinda concluded the session urging participants to write and share their creations and read out Think Different - the Apple Anthem!

Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet,
Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God's great Judgment Seat;
But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth,
When two strong men stand face to face, though they come from the ends of the earth!

Unity and Caring - Aspiration JMMS

Unity gives strength to fight any big problem. Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much. Strength grows when we dare, unity grows when we pair, love grows when we share and  relation grows when we care. Care does not need powerful eyes or a cute voice, or a lovely face. It always needs a beautiful responsible heart with affection forever. When you truly care for someone, their mistakes never change your feelings because it's the mind that gets angry but the HEART still cares.

Sympathy: Urmila Rathore

Sympathy literally means a feeling of compassion towards someone or understanding their
problems. In everyday life, we see how many unintentional events happen that shock us from inside. We see in children, their helpful nature towards each other. During lunch in school, they share their tiffin-boxes with other students who couldn’t bring one. They talk of their routine, share each other's emotions; ask of the problems they face and so on.

Similarly, they also share their pen, book, pencil, etc. with each other. I have seen many times in school that some children feed half of their food to dogs and when asked why they do this, they reply, “Who else will feed them then?”

In them, you have to teach moral values to be sympathetic to the trees, such as watering them, not breaking the flower leaves, etc. A school harbours children of vivid natures, some of them good in studies, some in collaborative activities. At the same time, they have to learn and need to be taught not to ridicule someone's weakness. Students need to be explained that their little joke can hurt someone deeply, so they have to learn to understand the situation of others, to experience their pain.

In the present day, COVID19 pandemic has explained to humanity that we can share one's suffering only with the help of others. Doctors, nurses, police, etc. are busy serving patients day and night without worrying about themselves and their families. On the other hand, governments and donors are providing basic needs to the daily labourers, migrant labourers and the poor; this is a perfect example of sympathy.

We should know the problems of others and understand their pain and help. Nature also helps every living animal to fulfil its needs. Therefore, we should not harm and keep every person, creature, trees and plants happy.

Ten Formulas of Success - Manish Jaiswal

I hope each one of you will be quite happy and healthy when this article touches you in this
period of lockdown everywhere.

See the positive side of lockdown & take this state of being at home full day as a challenge for yourself to increase sitting hours of study. In the normal days, we have a lot of distractions from a study like friends, outings, outside works etc. These distractions are absent nowadays except your TV & mobile. So starting with a 72-hour challenge (except your online study), break your attraction from these two as well.

Experience new things in your increased sitting hours. As soon as we increase sitting our speed of understanding and grasping the concept increases to many times in the later hours of study. Scientifically it is due to an increase in our concentration /focus in later hours of study. In the early hours of study, our mind is full of outside happenings which fade with time. This proves the importance of increased sitting hours in the life of students of secondary and senior secondary classes especially. Some of the board toppers and merit achievers have also revealed this experience in their interviews.

Furthermore, Today I want to give you 10 point study values to ensure success in your ambition.

10 FORMULAS OF SUCCESS:

1. Self Discipline (A student should set a target for himself & keep chasing it)
2. Serenity (He/She should be fully serious towards aim & work calmly)
3. Synergy (Good Communication with teacher & own classmates)
4. Steady (Regularly/Nonstop work for aim)
5. Stamina (Patience in efforts because F.A.I.L means First Attempt In Learning)
6. Succinct (Make your own brief summary notes as memory is limited )
7. Sensible (Use your mind to decide the priority of more importance topics)
8. Share (Sharing resources increases knowledge)
9. Satisfaction (Daily achieving target bring satisfaction & keeps motivated)
10. Self Reliance (Keep in mind that no one can better

So, stay at home, remain motivated, keep studying, fulfil your dreams and come out with flying colours.

Of course, the future is yours……This is what I think is important for your success.

Happiness and Tolerance - Harmony BHIS

-A True Experience of Happiness
It was the month of the occasion, and a new dawn was heralding the advent of the winter season. Our school arranged for a trip to Gwalior during Diwali Vacation. Most of the ninth graders were eager to go for that trip. It was a matter of discontentment for them that they would not be allowed to go for such kind of long journey with their friends when they would be in tenth grade, according to them ‘a pick moment of stress in school life where they need some stress buster’. So, they did not have any desire to lose the opportunity of making merriment with their friends for a few days without any constraints.

Harsh, Vivek, Muskaan, Shreya, Yash and Navjyot were in their ecstatic mood. Staying with friends for five days and nights throughout, it was just a heavenly feeling for them. They didn’t want to be parted from each other at any cost.

As per schedule, along with the other kids and teachers in charge, they boarded the train at Central Mumbai for Gwalior at 3 p.m. At the proper time, they were served with a mouthwatering delicacy like pizzas by the tour guides. The food was of their choice, it had a euphoric impact upon them.

After the allocation of seats, Harsh and Vivek went towards the compartment where their friends were sitting. In this way, they were enjoying the real taste of freedom. How time passed for them, they couldn’t make out; they were so much engrossed in their fun. Gradually, the compartment became noisier and noisier. The other co-passengers had already expressed their grievances at the unnecessary movement of those children and throwing wrappers around in the compartment. Dinner was served on time, after that, most of our kids and the other commuters went to sleep.

For Harsh and Vivek, it was just the outset of their ventures. Then, they did not want to be dictated by anyone. They forgot the lesson they learnt on the fundamental rights and duties. They could hardly remember that they shouldn’t celebrate the moment by intruding on someone’s freedom. The passengers reiterated their complaints. That was the end of their tolerance.

Here the role of a teacher is decided. Accordingly, the teachers played as the harbingers to channelize the children like Harsh and his associates in the right direction. Subsequently, they were made to realize ‘what exactly true happiness means and how it can cross the limit of tolerance if it is misconstrued’. Our innocent kids could quickly then identify that true happiness lies in the joy of achieving someone’s love through the expression of ‘share and care’ and not by impinging on other’s happiness. As it is rightly said by Dalai Lama, "Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions.”
