Have We Learnt Any Lessons?

Have we learnt any lessons by Sandeep Dutt

Why does a student need to be a pawn in the coaching and extra-class business?

Read on Substack

"Let me now come to the challenge we are trying to address: the tuition industry and the coaching centres. Their meteoric rise has been fueled by intense competition for the limited number of seats in higher learning institutions and the hand-in-glove of policymakers and businesses, who are cashing in on the market." Power of Enterprise - Readiness to Explore - Dipty Ahuja

As a commerce postgraduate, the Power of enterprise means the power of running a legal entity possessing the right to conduct business on its own, keeping supply-demand in that area, input-output, SWOT analysis, and Profit-Loss in consideration.

However, from the session with Bhairavi Ma’am, I could understand that everybody has the ‘Power of Enterprise’ skills. We need to discover those skills in ourselves and use them as an opportunity to better ourselves and the people around us.

The power of enterprise can be done by setting up a new idea and acting on that idea effectively or by using your enterprise skills in your existing work life. In teaching, I always try to keep myself upgraded as per the demand of today’s era. Especially when one can get an abundance of information with a click.

As a Pre-primary teacher, how best I can adapt and bring new innovative ideas to inculcate holistic values in their formative years of life. Along with new ideas, readiness to adapt to any recent changes required, risk executing it better with lots of logical approaches and keeping a check on the results simultaneously. When we know both parents are working, it becomes our responsibility as a part of an educational institution to work on their discipline, the habit of learning and willingness to try new things, help develop their creativity and curiosity, focus and belief in themselves.

In Gyanshree School, even at the Pre-nursery level, we plan many activities where kids are asked to choose, think critically, and reflect afterwards. One of our favourite preschool critical thinking activities often includes an outdoor picnic. We give our Shreeyans a lunch box to pack and suggest relevant and irrelevant items to a picnic, and we let them tell us which items are suitable and why, Shape Hunt games etc.

With Pahale India, I understood that everybody needs to collaborate as a team to achieve a common goal or overall development. In this scenario, after identifying the problem or target to achieve, we should use our individual potential, which includes not only teaching staff but students who should also be involved, which will, in return, make them responsible. They will feel part of it in the path of accomplishment of their success goals. The light of the ray might be from educators, but the goal achievement would be in collaboration. Everyone can think differently with their experience and skills, which might help solve glitches. Furthermore, involving children in a part of it will allow them to use their minds logically and critically, which can be an opportunity for their future decisions.

To conclude, with the above brief description, we could develop a power of enterprise with constant learning to adapt to all changes required with motivation & passion, critical thinking & logical reasoning with the view of the final goal to achieve in mind in our Shreeyans and amongst of all.

Audra Gold "I am passionate about Education...

Episode #96: Sandeep Dutt in conversation with Audra Gold, the CEO and co-founder of Vurbl, one of the largest non-music databases of streaming audio in the US with thousands of audio creators publishing content for millions of listeners that are consuming millions of minutes of audio from a library of over 30 million titles across 100's of content categories. Audra fell in love with the Internet in college in the 1990s, during the first years of the Commercial Internet. She started developing start-up ideas and launching them with fellow students, and she has not stopped since. Audra has helped build, launch and grow digital-first businesses from the first dot-com boom through many economic ups and downs after that, learning just about every lesson you can imagine in the many start-ups she has been a part of. She has been awarded a Primetime Emmy Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media for her work at Fourthwall Studios, which the Nantworks group of companies later acquired. She has also helped author and develop several digital media and ad-tech related patents throughout the last 20 years.
Audra shares what learning means to her in today's Episode, her passion for education, and the importance of audio learning. As a child, she was an inquisitive person; she spent a lot of time in the library, the internet for learning in that era! She comes from a family of educators; what drove her to audio and the idea of Vurbl was born through her personal consumption of audiobooks, as this was her first passion, you listen and learn, perhaps the easiest way to enrich your brain. The successful womenprenuer shares three ingredients for a successful career recipe: passion, knowledge acquisition, and hard work ethics in life. Her favourite teacher story and how she learnt from watching her teachers - patience, discipline and enthusiasm - have helped her become a good mentor for people in life. She has spent a lot of time teaching, her teacher was her cross country coach, and he taught her the benefits of juicing, which helped him batter cancer. This was real-life learning about nutrition and holistic health. A maths teacher changed her diet perspective! Her favourite quote is, "Be suspicious of what you want; this keeps her motivated as it helps her delve deeper and find out what is the motive, what is driving you to do x,y and Z? Competitive sports shaped her approach to life, team building for business was indeed learnt from the soccer team.
"Building a business is one of the hardest, most difficult things you'll ever do. You better make sure you are building something meaningful to you and brings you joy at the end of the day. If I did not love the audio medium and believe in our ability to truly revolutionize the audio space for creators, listeners and brands, I would never have survived the last 6 months." CSR and the need of the hour

NEW DELHI: Amid the debate over making it mandatory for companies to spend at least 2 per cent of profits on CSR activities, RIL Chairman and India's wealthiest person Mukesh Ambani today suggested improving corporate social responsibility to Continuous Social Business.

"The purpose of any business cannot be only profit. Profit for the shareholders is important. But unless entrepreneurs have a larger purpose and businesses that change lives of millions of people, a sustainable business cannot be created," he said at FICCI's Annual General Meeting here.

"We will have to move from a model of Corporate Social Responsibility to a model of Continuous Social Business through enterprise and entrepreneurship," he said. "For that, we will have to create world class institutions with a soul."

"It is important to get the business of businesses right," he said, adding that the primary responsibility of business is social improvement.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance has proposed that companies should spend at least 2 per cent of their annual profits on CSR activities, but the industry has opposed the proposal.

Calling for increased spends from the government in healthcare and education, Ambani said that outlays in healthcare formed only 1 per cent of India's GDP, which he said needs to grow at least five-folds.

"Our demographic dividend, the youth and the young, are largely unprotected and uncared for. We will need to radically transform healthcare delivery to all our people," he said.

"Current food prices justify heavy investment and job creation has to be through agriculture and rural economic growth," Ambani said. He foresees an additional $ 500 billion opportunity for India in agriculture output.

The opportunity in Indian agriculture is as big as it is in energy, he said, adding that the country needs more policies like the liberalisation policy of 1991.

Stating that a large untapped opportunity existed for India to boost its under-leveraged consumer class, Ambani said the country's per capita income is less than $ 1000, one-third of China, while its per capita energy consumption is minuscule.

"Less than 1 per cent of our population uses credit cards for transactions and consumer loans are about 10 per cent of the total loan disbursals, representing an under-leveraged consumer class," Ambani said.

He said that India has grossly under-performed both in expanding access and improving the quality of education.

"In a fast moving world, we have not managed to make our education system contemporary," he said.
