Q&A WITH AUTHOR - How can I read better?

An extract from a book I am reading!

Q&A WITH AUTHOR

YJ: I love your book. It makes me feel like I'm successful by virtue of reading and I like this feeling. (laughs). It's totally my kind of book.

AR: Yes, absolutely. (laughs) Reading makes you see with clearer eyes and understand the world better. When you can do that, you become stronger - the feeling you associate with success. But at the same time, it gives you pain. Within the pages, there's much suffering, beyond what we've gone through in our finite experience of life. You'll read about suffering you didn't know existed. Having experienced their pain through words, it becomes a lot harder to focus on pursuing individual happiness and success. Reading makes you deviate further from the textbook definition of success because books don't make us go ahead of or above anyone else; they guide us to stand alongside others.

Y: I like that line - to stand alongside others.

AR: We become successful in other ways.

Y: How so?

AR: We become more compassionate. To read is to see things from someone else's perspective, and that naturally leads you to stop and look out for other people, rather than chase after success in the rat race. If more people read, I think the world would become a better place.

YJ: It's common to hear people say that they have no time to read but I believe you read a lot?

AR: Not really, about one book every two or three days.

YR: I call that reading a lot. (laughs)

AR: Really? (laughs) Being so busy, were usually left with only small pockets of time to read - perhaps in the morning, during lunch, in the evening after work and before we go to bed. But these pockets of time can add up to become something substantial.

XI: You mentioned that you usually read a few books at any one time.

AR: Yeah, I have a short attention span. I get bored and distracted easily, even if the book is interesting. So, when I start to feel restless, I'll switch to reading something else. I've been told that I'll mix up the plots, but so far, that has never happened.

X: I feel like I'll forget what I've read earlier by the the time I return to the previous book.

AR: Hmm... when I read, I don't obsess over the need to remember every detail. Of course, I'll need to remember the earlier bits to a certain extent, but that said, it's also unlikely that you have zero recollection of what happened. I usually recall most of it, but if my memory is a little hazy, I'll reread the bits I've underlined in pencil before I move on.

Y: Yes, I remember you mentioned in your book that there's no need to obsess over the details. But is it really okay? (laughs)

AR: (laughs) It's perfectly fine. Books are not meant to remain in your mind, but in your heart. Maybe they exist in your mind too, but as something more than memories. At a crossroads in life, a forgotten sentence or a story from years ago can come back to offer an invisible hand and guide you to a decision.

Personally, I feel like the books I've read led me to make the choices I've made in life. While I may not remember all the details, the stories continue to exert a quiet influence on me.

Y: That's very comforting to know. To be honest, I can't even recall much from the books I read just a month ago.

AR: Same for me, and I think most people will agree too.

Y: Some say were in an era where people no longer read. What do you think?

AR: While I was writing this book, I used Instagram for the first time. I was so pleasantly surprised by what I saw that I started to question who dreamt up the notion that people don't read these days? There are so many people on the app who are devouring books at an incredible pace, and it convinced me that readers aren't an extinct breed. That said, I know these Instagram readers are not representative of the average person and are probably a niche bunch. Some time back, I read this article claiming that half the adults in Korea don't even finish one book in a year. But when people don't read, you can't just call it a problem. It's not that straightfor-ward. Therere so many reasons: being busy, having no emotional bandwidth or time. It's because were living in such a suffocating society.

XT: Does that mean that until we create a more liveable society, it's going to be hard for people to read?

AR: Hmm... we can't just sit and wait for society to get better. If more people start to read, they'll be able to empathise with the pain of others and the world will become a better place sooner.

YJ: What can we do?

AR: It's not an issue I can solve. (laughs) But I believe that people still have an appetite for read-ing, and that they feel it's important to read. What about the people who want to read, but can't, for one reason or another?

YJ: ...

AR: As the age-old saying goes, the first step is always the hardest. (laughs) How do we start? Oh, is this the point where I should say I wrote the book with this group in mind? (laughs)

YJ: That's it? Not even a teaser? Come on, share something with us. How about the bit about using timers on days when you can't concentrate?

AR: Of course, I was just kidding. On days when you can't concentrate, ask yourself what's been on your mind recently. Humans are naturally motivated to be curious about things were interested in. For example, many of us want to quit our jobs. If you're thinking of quitting, read books written by people who've quit. There are many such books. If you want to emigrate, read stories about people who've moved across lands and oceans. If you're struggling with low self-esteem, have lost touch with a good friend or feel depressed, seek out books about that. But if you haven't read for a long while, it might be hard to concentrate, and you may get distracted easily. When I feel this way, I set a timer on my phone for twenty minutes. Until the timer rings, I'll focus on the book. Setting small restrictions like this adds a little tension that'll help us concentrate. Once the twenty minutes are up, we have the choice to stop reading, or if we want to go on a little longer, we can set a timer for another twenty minutes. If we do it three times, we have read for an hour already. Let's try to set the timer three times and complete an hour of reading every day.

Quality and Love - Optimizers BHIS

Where there is love and care there is no darkness.

Listen to the podcast

A student is far more responsive to a teacher who loves and cares and is, therefore, more likely to learn and engage.

Let us read the story of Raj and how his teacher’s love and caring relationship helped him to do better in school. Raj was a well-known student in his school and in the class for his outstanding commitment. All students knew that he was very helpful towards teachers and his friends. He uses to volunteer in all the school events and even waited after school with teachers, to help them out in completing the extracurricular activities. One of the teachers was a keen observer of Raj’s behaviour. He encouraged and motivated him in all the works that he does in class. But, he found that Raj was not enthusiastic in studies like the way he is good at activities. He enquired from other teachers and tried to know more about Raj. But, he did not get many details from them.

One day the teacher called Raj and had a talk with him. The teacher asked “Dear Raj I appreciate your involvement in school activities, the way you help teachers and your friends. What about your studies? You are not performing well in your academics and I would like to know the reasons for your lack of interest in studies". Raj started crying. The teacher got puzzled and asked him to share his worries with him. Raj told teacher about his family issues that included the disputes between his parents and he was feeling uncared at home due to which he felt lonely, so he spends most of the time in school and makes himself involved in some work. He doesn’t want to go home.

The teacher made him understand the importance of academics in life. Raj was given the assurance by the teacher that he will be with him in all his difficulties. This love and caring character of the teacher towards Raj continued for months which made Raj focus in his academics. One day the teacher called his parents to school. He had a separate discussion with Raj’s parents where he shared to his parents about their son’s talents and dedication towards school. An insecure Raj was in need of his parent's love and care. Tears rolled from their eyes after hearing their son’s performances in different activities that were held in the school which the parents ignored and overlooked. They hugged their son and promised the teacher that they will love and care Raj in future without giving any trouble to him.

Empathy, love and understanding, caring, all of that is so important when you're an educator. It really does shape your experience as a teacher, but also the experience of students.

Follow your passion - Nikita Rajpurohit

Passion is a deep liking to something that you are really interested in. Following your passion means exploring areas that spark your interest, developing your skills in a specific area, and using those skills to contribute to something beyond yourself. Understanding or finding one's passion is a long journey. Once you find out, they need to nurture it. All of us have a passion, you could either get it mastered or leave it like that. To get it mastered, it needs a lot of dedication, hard work and patience. Passion gives you a reason to keep learning and to work towards mastery. We all have an inner liking for some art or act, that really drives us crazy and we love doing it. We never get tired or bored in doing such art or acting.

Passion is very important to succeed in life because people who are passionate about what they do, rather than just "in it for the money," tend to be people who have more positive outlooks and are able to overcome difficulty through problem-solving. You cannot become rich or achieve any other kind of success in life if you don’t have passion in your life or passion about what you are doing. Be it the simplest thing or the most sophisticated thing, you need passion in order to succeed.

“When work, commitment, and pleasure all become one and you reach that deep well where passion lives, nothing is impossible.”

Passion drives motivation which helps to do the work with zeal and enthusiasm. It also helps to generate new ideas because when we love something to do, we always try to make it the best in a creative manner to enhance quality. So during this pandemic situation, when we have got enough time to explore ourselves,  we all must try to find our hidden talents and be passionate about something. Last but not the least, do what you love to do and live your life with Passion.

Happiness and Tolerance - Byju Joseph

Tolerance is the quality of possessing a positive attitude towards everyone. As social beings, we all need to be tolerant with other people who are of different races, cultures, languages, religions and nations. They have different opinions, beliefs and ideas which may not be familiar with us. The depth of tolerance lies in the ability to make our mind broader enough to accept others ideas and thoughts. This approach really helps to expand our knowledge and understanding level. It is the positive energy of humanity.  The responsibility of tolerance lies with those who have the wider vision of reality.

As educators, we must have tolerance, respect, and equality in our learning community. We must be ready to listen and accept the ideas and opinions of our children. It creates a deeper understanding of their views and beliefs. Former American President John F. Kennedy once said, ‘Tolerance implies no lack of commitment to one’s own beliefs, rather than it condoms the oppression or persecution of others’. Tolerance is a virtue that depends upon peace and strength. It is the ability to endure pain and hardships. In another way, having tolerance is a good ability to overcome certain circumstances but it depends on how we handle the situations. It helps us to overcome challenges and accept things in our lives.

Happiness is something that we can't buy from anyone or from anyone. It is a feeling that comes from within. We live our lives trying to find happiness without realizing it is within ourselves. We need to realize it and embrace it. We can make others happy only when we are happy. There are many occasions in our life that provide a lot of happiness to us. It is a mental satisfaction that we achieve when we accomplish something or when our mind fulfils or satisfies with something. We all do several things which we like and from all those, we get mental satisfaction which makes us happy. There are moments of happiness that we cannot control sometimes because of the fruitfulness of hard work and proper planning behind such events to make them successful. Such feelings arise within us and thus they provide more and more occasions to enjoy our lives.

School being the second home of children, it must be a happy place. Educator's duty is to teach the values and practice them among students and thus to make the school a place of happy learning It is important to develop the values like tolerance and happiness in children which are very essential for the successful completion of tasks in their learning process. These values help them with their mental and social development. They help the children to understand each other in all aspects which will lead to better social bonding and relationship. Possessing these values to help the children to become good citizens of our country. So, let us work together to achieve the goal.

Youthful Nation

Power of Sports for Development (S4D)

The nation is always young and has many of us in transition. The young aspire for a better world the nations must evolve and keep up with the needs and aspirations of the youth. Youth development is really the crux of nation building, the country that takes care of the young people develops and goes on to become not only rich in wealth and culture but evolves as a real welfare state. There is thus the necessity of having a healthy and more fit young populace. The core of the youthful nation will only be strengthened by promoting physical recreation in the life of the young people.

Education many a times is touted and promoted as literacy; promotes the need to read and write for a better future, this is not enough.
We need thinking and understanding and that is really the bottom line for a better future. There is the growing need for mentors to help the young, empower them to live in harmony with nature, encourage them to serve the community and more so be physically fit and better skilled than simply educated in the read and write way. We all have to work to equip for life the young, challenge them to achieve their true potential and keep the nation young, dynamic and on the growth path always.

India's rise in economic terms is closely linked to the youth power, and all investments in building youth capital will help the young equip for life. Yes, inclusive growth the mantra of governments is enshrined on building up the quality of life for the young people, and we all need to partner to help the young achieve their true potential. How do we do this? Let us invest in our youth and help them all live a healthy life. The best investment in youth will be in the form of pushing sports, not necessarily at the professional level, but for better health and wellbeing, we have endless research to show that poor health will not give us the desired academic results. India today needs to give same regard to sports as it does to any of the key economic activity that generates the millions for the states exchequer.

What does industry mean? Wikipedia refers industry as an activity that brings about the production of an economic good or service within an economy. An economy consists of the economic system of a country or other area; the laborcapital and land resources; and the manufacturingtradedistribution, and consumption of goods and services of that area. An economy may also be described as a spatially limited and social network where goods and services are exchanged according to demand and supply between participants by barter or a medium of exchange with a credit or debit value accepted within the network. Sport very much fulfils this criterion, and for the youthful nation must thus be regarded as an industry and a major service that adds to the GDP of a nation. Any nation that uses sport as a development plank not only has a healthy lifestyle, is a youthful nation in itself. These nations today are major economic powers and believe in their young people.

Physical recreation with its emphasis on both individual sport and team games is designed to build the sinews as well as team spirit. Learning to function together with other to build a team is an invaluable art. Beyond just being an industrious activity, sport is the biggest catalyst in nation building, and is the best way for social inclusion and economic development. A nation must stay young to lead in the world, and the best way is to use sport as a key development initiative. Many developed nations have even used a term of military / services training as a compulsory activity for the youth, they thus work to build on achieving the goal of inculcating patriotic sentiment, but more is done to encourage physical fitness and the love for the outdoor. All this helps the young people to be equipped for life, and this again is the only way to build a better citizenry.

The International Award for Young People (IAYP), is a tool to ‘equip for life’ young people in India and a major components of the programme are targeted at using sport and outward bound activity as key enablers. The Award Programme is the most adaptable and successful youth empowerment program. We have no religious, political or strategic affiliations. We have an established capacity for identifying hard issues and challenges associated with youth. Schools, youth organisations, community groups, correctional services, employers and government departments nationwide use the Programme framework. Around the world, over 130 countries use this model for positive youth empowerment. We draw together and connect people, institutions and generations with the common purpose of youth development and inclusion. IAYP is the Programme of choice for over 9 million people in the world today.

The prescription for a youthful nation is only one, challenge young people everywhere. The vision of any sport for development initiative should be to equip for life all young Indians and to help achieve their full potential. We see the possibility of a nation where every school offers young Indian the opportunity to be rewarded for challenging themselves, rewarded for engaging with adult mentors, rewarded when finishing school, and rewarded for giving back to their communities. This really is the spirit for a youthful nation. We all need to ensure that we work to create best ecosystem to enable our youth, and there is no better way to do this than making sport for development a key agenda in all our initiatives.

Draft Volunteer Conduct Agreement

NAA means National Award Authority, and the NAA India office is in New Delhi, contact Nivedita for further information. Call us now +91 11 26497154/ 26493400

The draft Volunteer Conduct Agreement reads as follow:-

Throughout the world the Award is reliant on the hard work, commitment and dedication of volunteers.  It is volunteers who, for the most part, deliver the Programme to young people and act as instructors and supervisors for the different activities.  Without volunteers the Award could not operate. When working with volunteers, NAAs should undertake the following steps:

·         A description of the role must be written and agreed with the volunteer.
·         Relevant references must be taken up and the equivalent of a Criminal Records Bureau check must be carried out, where possible.
·         All volunteers must undergo an induction into the organisation.
·         The necessary volunteer conduct agreement should be signed.
·         Training should be provided where necessary to enable the volunteer to carry out their role.
·         A highly supportive level of supervision and management must be carried out with regular meetings to review progress.
·         A proper ‘thank you’ needs to be made at the end of the project and the appropriate handover undertaken.

It is important that no document sets out ‘rights’ or ‘obligations’ nor gives the volunteer employment rights. It is also important to include expectations of the volunteer and of the organisation in the role profile.

Recognition of Achievements
NAAs should present adults involved in the Award, certificates in recognition of outstanding service to the Award. The certificate should be signed by the chairman or president of the NAA, or their nominated representative.

The success of the Award has depended largely on the extent to which people have helped with its organisation, development, promotion, operation, and assessment. Meritorious service of this nature can be acknowledged by the award of a certificate recording such recognition. Emphasis should be on outstanding service over a significant period of time; the presentation of a certificate should never be regarded as automatic.

Minimum Service
The minimum time involvement should normally be at least 3, 5 or 10 continuous years, though there may be exceptional cases when a shorter period of service would be worthy of recognition, or where breaks in service could be taken into account.

Criteria
The judgement of outstanding service must inevitably be subjective, but considerable involvement of an individual's own free time to the undoubted benefit of a number of young people, is the basic criterion. Evidence is also required of positive advancement of the Award’s aims and philosophy. The person should have demonstrated superior efforts and initiatives during his or her period of involvement with the Award and is expected to have shown exceptional ability, reliability and results in one or more fields related to its operation.

Future Commitment
The presentation of a certificate of recognition is not merely a reward for meritorious past service, though that is a necessary condition, but a point at which exceptional talent, initiative and diligence have been recognised at the highest level, and beyond which nominees are expected to commit themselves to further efforts on behalf of the Programme and its participants.

Procedure
Nominations should be made to national Award offices. The presentation of the certificates is at the discretion of the national Award committee or board.

Eligibility
There will be many categories of persons eligible for nomination, including Award advisers, long-standing chairpersons and members of Award committees and panels, members of expedition panels, unit co-ordinators, leaders and organisers, and instructors and assessors of Award activities.

Presentation
Wherever possible, an appropriate occasion (for example, a local Award presentation) should be chosen for the recipient to be presented with the Certificate of Recognition.
