Quality and Love - Welham Boys' School

Quality

1. A student who does a shoddy job with classwork and homework.

Teachers play a pivotal role in shaping a child's future, making him/her a better human being. As a teacher, I have encountered several pupils who struggle to keep up with their classwork and assignments and exhibit poor performance in the classroom. In these situations, it is critical to identify the underlying reasons behind the student's subpar performance. I would address this problem in the following way.

Initially, I would evaluate the student's performance and look for behavioural trends. This would entail assessing their prior grades, present workload, study habits, and other factors influencing their performance.

The second approach would be directly discussing the student's performance with them. It is crucial to approach this discussion without passing judgement and to concentrate on finding answers rather than placing blame. It is critical to pinpoint the main reason behind their subpar performance. This could be brought on by a lack of interest, a problem comprehending the subject matter, or other outside influences
like family or personal problems.

Once the root reason has been determined, it is critical to developing a strategy specific to the student's needs. This can entail offering extra assistance through coaching or mentorship, modifying the workload to fit their learning preferences, or offering rewards for better performance.

Ultimately, it is crucial to constantly assess the student's development and modify the strategy as appropriate. Honouring even modest victories helps keep the learner inspired and on task.

Love
2. Two underage students in a romantic relationship.
Teachers assist pupils with life skills and global knowledge outside of the classroom. They develop a student's personality and also assist kids in coping with difficult situations. As a teacher, it's critical to establish a secure and encouraging learning environment for all children. Here is how I would handle a case if two underage students were involved in a romantic relationship.

Firstly, I would begin by comprehending the school's policy on student relationships. To do this, you must examine the school handbook or chat with other administrators or teachers.

Secondly, to have a private discussion with the two concerned students. This would entail hearing their viewpoint, comprehending their intentions, and ensuring they know the school's relationship policy. By doing this, we can understand their psychological state. We should engage them in activities which would keep them engrossed and help them to focus on their overall development of themselves for which
they come to school.

If required, I would also bring up the subject with the parents of the two students. By doing this, it might be possible to ensure everyone is on the same page and that the student's safety and well-being are prioritised. However, students need help understanding the magnitude of the situation. In that case, we, as guardians, can provide assistance to pupils in the form of emotional support or by referring them to a school counsellor or other outside support resources may be part of this.

Lastly, monitoring is critical to ensure the students are not misbehaving or violating school rules. To make sure that everyone is on the same page and that the youngsters are secure and supported, it can be helpful to regularly check in with the students and their parents.

Quality and Love - Sukhpreet Kaur

A student who does a shoddy job with classwork and homework

Quality is a parameter to check the excellence of a child. It varies with age. At a certain level, we expect quality work from our students. It is essential to check the well-being of the child instead of the perfection and quality of their work. I am a grade mentor of class 5, a transitional phase in every respect.

Every year I meet with different souls. This year, my interaction is with a student who is a reasonable observer and a kinesthetic learner. He is blessed with silence and calmness. He is excellent at analyzing and synthesizing. During winter, he came to me and discussed the issue of improvement in his handwriting. He shared that he needs to present his work well due to his shoddy writing. I listened to him patiently and gave him a remedy for his problem. I discussed the matter with his parents too. I told my student to write one paragraph every day without fail. He religiously followed the same. His parents are supportive, and he worked together. The sincere effort of the student gave him a positive feeling and confidence.

Two underage students in a romantic relationship

Spring is the season for spreading Love in every living being after the harsh winter climate. Love is in the air. Love is in our thoughts, in emotions, and in every gesture. In grade 5, students do talk about crushes rather than romantic relationships. But yes, the pandemic changed the behaviour of grade 5, and they tend to behave and interact like teenagers. Recently, one student came and asked me about my first crush, my first Love and at what age. It was an indicator for me. I asked my students what Love is to them? Many students explained Love to me like– getting a new dress is Love, getting a hug from the grandparents is Love, meeting friends is Love, dancing is Love, and few were only giggling. I thought we teachers inculcate values and passion for learning something through Love. So I thought the Love of learning could be developed and cultivated using simple strategies. They are as follows:

  • Help children discover interest and passion

  • Help them to visualize and imagine

  • Find the child’s learning style

  • Help to develop skills in them

  • Have more healthy discussions every day

  • Be supportive and encouraging

  • Give more hands-on work/experiment

Talking to students regularly is Love.

Quality and Love - Laxmi Kant Bhatt

A student who does a shoddy job in classwork and homework

A classroom is a mixture of children having different learning competencies and interests. Each student is special and unique, so some may perform well in some subjects while others may not. Each student will be different from another and may showcase different talents and creativity. In this group of students, some may need to catch up regarding their academic performance. Some students take more time to comprehend learning topics, and some need to write faster.

A new student was admitted to the class. He was a very active and intelligent child. He used to participate in every lively discussion in the class. But when it came to writing or completing the class work or homework, he was at the last of the class. He was too slow in meeting any of his notebook assignments. He was very used to typing away on laptops and Ipads that his writing skills needed to be higher. I explained to him the importance of writing. He should have a habit of writing fast, as in board exams, the children must complete the paper writing in the given time. After that, they are not given any extra time for writing. I advised him to write letters to his parents, friends etc. His family members will also appreciate him for the letters, and it is a great way to work on his writing skills for anyone. Keeping a journal and writing daily can help increase the speed. He followed my advice, and slowly his writing skills improved.

Two underage students in a romantic relationship

Being involved in a romantic relationship at an early age hurts motivation and concentration, and thus also learning. Early romantic relationships are often very emotionally intense, leading teenagers to invest much time and energy in them that would otherwise be devoted to hobbies, friends, family schoolwork.

Quality and Love - Roopa Bhattacharyya

A student who does a shoddy job with classwork and homework

The pandemic has had a telling effect on the writing ability of many children. In the last two years, assignments and tests were mainly based on google Forms and multiple-choice responses. The students were rarely required to submit classwork or homework in written form. So, when I started teaching grade three in physical classes last April, most students could not write words and sentences with clearly formed letters, as expected from a third grader. So, in addition to the regular work, I had to make them practice handwriting. While many improved, two children submitted shoddy work after six months. So, I gave them particular practice and motivated them to get a gold star for doing neat work. This has helped improve the quality of the classwork and homework.

However, only one of the laggard children still needed to improve. Counselling the child showed that his parents could not help him due to their busy work schedule and general apathy towards education. The child was bright and knew all the answers orally. However, he could not write it down neatly; the handwriting needed to be legible. It took almost one year of constant motivation, and finally, the child is writing legibly now.

Two underage students in a romantic relationship

Since teaching in the primary department, I have never encountered students in a romantic relationship. Nowadays, children are overexposed to TV and OTP platforms thus, they often say things like “I LOVE YOU” to other children, and immediately, some others respond “, HAW”. Some even go to the teacher and report this. So I, as a teacher, explain that love is a great feeling and nothing to be embarrassed by. I explain to them that their parents love them, they love their parents, they love their brothers and sisters, they love their teachers, and the teachers also love them. So, love is a feeling of concern and sharing. It is one of the noblest emotions.

Quality And Love - Shalini Solanki

Quality is preferred to get appreciation, and appreciation creates love for Quality. One needs to spend more to get Quality in life, be it anything. The same goes for writing. One needs to spend time and patience to get the desired Quality in work. Quality in writing is not only about beautiful handwriting but also error-free work. It requires dedication and adaptability. Anyone ready to adopt criticism and feedback can positively change their task. We all want everyone to love us and our work, as it motivates us to do better in life, but when we love ourselves and our work, it brings Quality to our lives.

Situation 1
A student who does a shoddy job with classwork and homework

A student in my class joined our school this year only in Grade 2. He was introduced to cursive writing in Grade 1 in his previous school. When he was asked to write the answer in school for the first time, He wrote something, but I couldn’t understand a word. For him, there were no capital letters, no use of margins, and no giving finger gap between words. He used to start his written work from the middle of the page. Even the Follow-up work used to make my task difficult. I spoke to the parents, but the previous school never spoke to or guided them on the written work, so they never found it essential. I made him sit next to my table and guided him to write with the rules I made for him. But the day he would sit at a different place, he would make the same mistakes again. I started rubbing his work so that he would realise his mistakes. He had to redo the work, which I wanted, to make him serious about the classroom performance. His work started getting better, but not as per my expectations. I started making dots as per the placements of the date, heading, sentences, and numbers in the margin. This helped him to get an idea about the different lines and spaces given in the notebook. His work came out really well. He learned to write capital letters and their usage. One day I took English spell check in my class, and this time his work amazed me. His work was beautiful, and he got appreciation from his peers and mentor. This love and appreciation motivated him to bring Quality to his regular classwork and follow-up work. Whenever he completes his work, he stands next to my table and waits for his work to get checked. He waits for appreciation every time, pushing him to do better. He is in love with the Quality of his own work.

Situation 2
Two underage students in a romantic relationship

I deal with Grade 2 students, and romantic relationships are experienced infrequently. But yes, I have heard them using words like love, like, and marriage. A few weeks ago, I heard two children saying ‘’I love you” to each other. Other students heard and started discussing that they both love each other and now must marry. I didn’t interfere as I wanted to read the little minds. One child raised a hand and, on permission, told me that both these children love each other and they will marry now. I very casually said…Then what is wrong with loving each other? I asked them a few questions: Don’t we love each other? Don’t you love your parents? Don’t you love your teachers and friend? For every question, they answered ‘Yes’. So I explained to them that we all love each other because we are together and care for each other. Love everyone, including plants and animals, is always good, as they love and care for us. The students were happy and didn’t discuss it further.

My approach in the first situation was-
-          To understand the reason
-          Dealing with patience
-          Appreciation and love
-          Creating trust, yes, I can.

In the second situation-
-          Understanding the approach
-          Not creating hype about anything
-          Dealing with emotions
-          Explaining everything
-          Didn’t avoid the situation, which could confuse little minds.

स्तर और प्रेम - Jyoti Tadiyal
