As a Class 3 Mathematics teacher, I aimed to move beyond the traditional “direct instruction” approach for teaching division. Inspired by Manu Kapur’s Productive Failure (PF) framework, I intentionally allowed students to grapple with complex division problems before introducing the standard method.

This approach encouraged students to explore multiple strategies, make mistakes, and engage in collaborative problem-solving. Through guided reflection and teacher support, students consolidated their understanding, discovered patterns, and developed a deeper conceptual grasp of division. Observations revealed improved retention, increased confidence, and enhanced critical thinking skills.

Integrating Productive Failure in the classroom transformed initial struggle into a meaningful learning experience, demonstrating that carefully structured challenges can foster deeper understanding, resilience, and curiosity in young learners.
