I introduced the lesson with an imaginative prompt:

I intentionally avoided step-by-step instructions on story structure, character development, or linking events.
My goal was to encourage students to think independently and explore multiple possibilities, even if they made mistakes.

Students were provided paper, pencils, and a quiet environment, with one instruction:
“Try your best, and don’t worry if it’s not perfect. Explore your ideas and see where they take you.”

A Case from Primary Environmental Studies (Ev.S.)

Abstract
This research-based classroom case study explores the use of Manu Kapur’s Productive Failure strategy in a Grade II Environmental Studies (Ev.S.) lesson on “Animals Around Us.” The activity, “Find the Odd One Out – With Reason,” was designed to help students develop observation, reasoning, and collaborative skills. By allowing children to explore multiple possible answers before the teacher’s explanation, the study highlights how productive struggle can foster critical thinking and acceptance of diverse perspectives. Findings reveal that even young learners can engage in higher-order thinking when guided through exploration, peer discussion, and reflection, resulting in deeper conceptual understanding and emotional engagement.

Introduction
In traditional classroom settings, teachers often expect one correct answer to each question. However, learning in the 21st century emphasises critical thinking, collaboration, and flexibility of thought, where multiple perspectives can coexist logically. The Productive Failure approach, developed by Manu Kapur (2008), supports this shift by encouraging students to explore challenging, open-ended problems before receiving formal instruction. Through guided struggle, learners actively construct understanding and gain ownership of their learning. In this study, Productive Failure was applied to an E.V.S. activity “Find the Odd One Out,” aimed at promoting reasoning and appreciation for multiple valid perspectives among second-grade students.

Objectives of the Study
● To help students develop observation and reasoning skills through an open-ended activity.
● To encourage acceptance of multiple valid answers supported by logical reasoning.
● To promote teamwork, active listening, and openness to others’ viewpoints.
● To examine how productive failure supports critical thinking and collaborative learning in early primary grades.

Theoretical Background
Productive Failure, as introduced by Manu Kapur, is a learning design where students initially engage in problem-solving tasks that are complex and unfamiliar. During this “failure” phase, they struggle to find solutions without prior instruction. The key lies in the learning that emerges from the struggle — learners generate ideas, identify gaps in understanding, and later connect these experiences to formal instruction.
This approach aligns with constructivist learning theory and Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development, where scaffolding occurs after exploration rather than before, leading to more durable learning.

Methodology

Students were instructed:
“Find the odd one out and tell me why. You can have more than one correct answer. Talk about your ideas with your group.”
This instruction deliberately left the task open-ended to encourage multiple interpretations. No hints or criteria were given beforehand.

Group Work
Students were divided into small groups of 4–5 members. The teacher observed without intervening, allowing students to discuss and debate freely. The following outcomes were recorded:

“We can group animals in many ways — by where they live, what they eat, or what they give us. That’s why more than one answer can be right.”
This moment helped students appreciate diversity in reasoning and validated their thought processes.

Findings and Analysis

Students analysed and compared animals from multiple dimensions — habitat, function, and symbolism.

Collaborative Learning:
Peer discussion created a safe space for sharing ideas and debating respectfully, strengthening communication and empathy.

Instead of memorising categories, students discovered how and why animals can be grouped differently.

Students showed excitement and ownership of learning. Their curiosity led to laughter, debates, and shared insights — evidence of intrinsic motivation.

The teacher shifted from being the source of information to a facilitator of discovery, observing and guiding reflection after exploration.

Reflection
This experience reaffirmed the power of Productive Failure in early education. By stepping back initially, the teacher enabled students to think, reason, and construct understanding through their own logic. The struggle was not a sign of weakness but a pathway to meaningful learning. Students demonstrated cognitive flexibility, creativity, and appreciation of diversity in thought, essential 21st-century learning skills.

Conclusion
The “Find the Odd One Out” activity in Ev.S. using the Productive Failure approach transformed a simple question into a dynamic exploration of reasoning and perspective-taking. Students learned not just about animals, but about how to think, listen, and value differences. They discovered that learning is not always about the “right” answer — it is about understanding why answers differ and how reasoning shapes knowledge.
As a teacher, the experience highlighted that genuine understanding often emerges when students are given space to struggle productively and collaborate meaningfully. Productive Failure thus becomes a powerful tool for nurturing curiosity, empathy, and intellectual independence in young learners.

Classroom Experience
When I introduced the topic, I wanted to see how my students understood the world around them without any definitions. I placed a mix of items on each table — a leaf, potted plant, toy cat, stone, crayon, and a cup — and simply said, “Sort these in any way you think is right.”

The room buzzed with excitement, confusion, and negotiation.
Some children grouped by colour, some by size, and a few created categories that made sense only to them. One group confidently placed the plant and toy cat together because “both look alive.” Their ideas were innocent but genuine, and I could see how much thinking was happening beneath the chaos.

Reflection as a Teacher
Watching their struggle was a reminder that learning is not always neat.
Their “wrong groups” were not failures — they were windows into their thought processes. I realised that if I had explained the concept first, I would have missed this opportunity to understand how children naturally observe the world.

When I later introduced the features of living and non-living things — growing, breathing, needing food — these ideas suddenly made sense to them. I could see the shift: the same children who earlier grouped by colour now confidently sorted the items with clear reasoning. Their joy in comparing their first and second attempts told me that the struggle had meaning.

Outcome
Students not only learned the concept but also developed confidence in exploring, questioning, and correcting themselves. The learning felt owned by them, not delivered by me.

Teacher's Insight
This experience reinforced Kapur’s idea for me: children learn deeply when they are allowed to think before being taught.

The small discomfort they felt in the beginning became the foundation for a stronger understanding. As a teacher, it reminded me to trust the process — even when the classroom looks messy — because that is often where real learning begins.

Learning Through Struggle: Applying Productive Failure in Class II English - Tanishqa Jaiswal


A Reflective Case Study Inspired by Manu Kapur’s “The Science of Failure”

Children learn best not by being told the right answers, but by exploring possibilities, making mistakes, and finding meaning through reflection. This belief lies at the heart of Productive Failure, an approach conceptualised by Manu Kapur, which views failure not as a setback but as an essential part of deep learning.

This classroom-based case study, conducted with my Grade II English learners, reimagines grammar instruction through the lens of The Science of Failure. It explores how structured struggle, peer dialogue, and guided reflection can make language learning more engaging and lasting.

Across five stages — Activation, Awareness, Affect, Assembly, and Designing for Self — students encountered real challenges before receiving formal instruction. Each phase encouraged them to question, collaborate, and construct understanding rather than simply recall information.

Through this process, learning shifted from memorisation to meaning-making. Grammar concepts such as nouns, pronouns, adjectives, sentence order, and prepositions evolved from abstract rules into living ideas the children could see, feel, and use.

The study demonstrates that when failure is made safe, guided, and reflective, it becomes a bridge to insight rather than a barrier to success.

CASE STUDY 1 – Awakening Curiosity (Activation)

Grammar Focus: Singular and Plural Nouns
Objective: To help learners identify patterns in word forms and independently discover how nouns change from singular to plural.

Classroom Narrative:

The day began with a simple question:
“What happens when there’s more than one?”

I scattered colorful picture cards across the floor — one apple, two apples; one man, two men; one child, three children. The children leaned closer, intrigued. Aarav pointed out, “We add s when there are many!”
Ekanshi frowned, holding up man → men, “But this one doesn’t fit.”
The class erupted in debate. Each wrong guess sparked new thinking. The confusion was deliberate — the productive activation of curiosity had begun.

Learning Process:

Step 1: Students sorted 15 picture cards into “One” and “Many” columns without any instruction.
Step 2: They discussed differences and tried forming their own rules.
Step 3: After sharing, I helped them formalise their discoveries into three rules — regular plurals (add s), special endings (add es), and irregulars (change spelling).

That’s when Aarav wrote, “It’s a shiny blue pencil box with stars.”
The class went “Ooooh!” — and that sound said it all.

I placed a ball on the table and asked, “Where is it?”
“On the table!” they shouted.
Then I moved it under and asked again — some said “below,” others “down.”
Instead of defining, I said, “Let’s find out what under really means.”
Soon, the classroom became a playground of words.

Learning Process:

Step 1: Students acted out prepositions.
Step 2: Created obstacle courses.
Step 3: Designed a “Preposition Treasure Hunt.”

Step-by-step procedure:

  1. Pre-test (4 minutes): 10 commands using prepositions; perform and record.

  2. Embodied Exploration (4 minutes): Act out prepositions in pairs.

  3. Mini Design Brief (3 minutes): Plan a treasure hunt with 4 clues.

  4. Design & Implementation (10 minutes): Swap hunts and explore.

  5. Peer Teaching (10 minutes): Present one part and explain choices.

  6. Post-test (5 minutes): Repeat 10 commands.

  7. Metacognitive Reflection (4 minutes): Rate confidence and insights.

My Final Reflection

Each phase reaffirmed Manu Kapur’s idea that failure, when structured and safe, leads to deeper learning than success on the first attempt.

My students did not just learn grammar — they learned how to learn.
They experienced confusion, curiosity, and clarity — the three stepping stones of meaningful education.

Productive Failure, a book written by Manu Kapur, is the foundation of the Masterclass we attend every Saturday in Sandeep Dutt Sir’s session. In these classes, we learn how to focus on the physical and mental development of children.

Every child possesses a unique kind of intelligence and hidden skill. When we choose our field of work based on our abilities and interests, we not only find happiness but also experience deep soul satisfaction. That’s why it is essential to identify our strengths and interests before deciding the direction of our career.

Productive Failure is an instructional approach where learners tackle complex problems without immediate guidance. This method encourages exploration, experimentation, and learning from failure. Thoughtful Thursdays: Sonnets, Lyrics and Music


Our Thoughtful Thursday sessions in the last two weeks have taken on a different dimension. They have helped us explore the deep-rooted connection between poetry, music, and all art forms. 
Therefore, we call it a MAP, focusing on Music, Art, and Poetry. The integration of these art forms has brought depth and meaning to the interpretation of the different genres and styles of art. 

When we spoke about poetry inspired by war and connected it to music by songwriters and performers like Bob Dylan, we could clearly see how music became a medium to take poetry to the masses. Lyrical poems have been composed, sung, and passed down through generations in ancient India and many other countries, like the Rhapsodies of Greece, Tanka of Japan, Shijig of China, etc. The folk singers of our country, like the Bauls of Bengal or the Pandavanis of Chattisgarh, create memorable poetry,  set it to music and make an invaluable contribution to Literature. 

Similarly, history proves that great works of art have inspired great poets, giving rise to Classic works like the famous Ode to a Grecian Urn by John Keats and Landscape with the Fall of Icarus by William Carlos William. In fact, Ekphrastic Poetry is a genre of poems written by poets inspired by works of art. This experience probably made Leonardo Da Vinci proclaim, ' Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt and Poetry is Painting that is felt rather than seen".

Sandeep Dutt and Brinda Ghosh addressed the concern of low email open rates among teachers, which hover between 7-19%. Recognizing the digital clutter teachers face, they explored ways to enhance engagement, including structured messaging via WhatsApp and Telegram for better accessibility.

Brinda Ghosh introduced a fresh format blending poetry and music, tracing the roots of lyrical poetry from Greek 🇬🇷, Sanskrit, and Hindi 🇮🇳 Literature. She emphasized the enduring magic of rhythm and rhyme, highlighting the ballad as a timeless lyrical form.

🖋️ Sonnets: A Dance of Words and Rhythm

Brinda Ghosh illuminated the beauty of sonnets, explaining their 14-line structure and iambic pentameter 🎵. The discussion celebrated Shakespeare's mastery 🏰 while acknowledging modern poets like T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound, who embraced free verse. The session also explored Indian lyrical poetry, particularly the Ghazal and Geet 🎤.

Through an analysis of Sonnet 18 ("Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?"), Brinda Ghosh highlighted themes of eternal love ❤️ and poetic immortality. The discussion then turned to Wordsworth's Daffodils, exploring its song-like quality, rhythmic flow, and evocative imagery.

📖 Lyricism Across Cultures: Dickinson, Ghazals, and Beyond

The lyrical depth of Emily Dickinson's Because I Could Not Stop for Death was examined alongside the rich heritage of Indian poetry. The discussion extended to translations of Indian poems, emphasizing their significance in modern education.

🎵 Harmonizing Words and Notes: The Art of Musical Poetry

Jatin Soni introduced the concept of art songs, where poetry and melody merge seamlessly. Using Franz Schubert's Erlkönig 🎻, he demonstrated how emotion, melody, and storytelling intertwine in music. The role of voice, accompaniment, and animation in enhancing poetic depth was also explored.

🎭 Art, Music, and Poetry: The Fusion of Expression

Brinda Ghosh and Sandeep Dutt emphasized the profound integration of art, music, and poetry in education. They highlighted the irreplaceable human touch in teaching and the value of time ⏳ in fostering creativity. Ethical concerns regarding the misuse of voice data by AI were also discussed.

What Makes a School- Mizan Ali

What is Slooh? - Slooh is a subscription-based internet telescope service with a patent for real-time
astronomy.
- Slooh is an online astronomy curriculum from elementary school to college.
- Slooh pioneered social astronomy and has formed a global community exploring space together.

Our mission: 
- Light pollution and the concentration of population in modern cities have blinded us to an essential aspect of our environment, one in which our ancestors had far more appreciation
- We aspire to reclaim this lost realm and with it a sense of perspective regarding the world beyond ourselves
- Rebuild our collective connection to the night sky by giving educators new ways to incorporate astronomy into the curriculum.

Curiosity: Usman Gani


Curiosity is a quality related to inquisitive thinking such as exploration, the investigation, and learning, evident by observation in humans and other animals.  Curiosity is heavily associated with all aspects of human development, in which derives the process of learning and the desire to acquire knowledge and skill.
The term curiosity can also be used to denote the behaviour or emotion of being curious, in regard to the desire to gain knowledge or information. Curiosity as a behaviour and emotion is attributed over millennia as the driving force behind not only human development, but developments in science, language, and industry. Curiosity in kids can be seen as when they get to learn new things they are very excited. The kids when they are given a new topic we can see the emotions and excitement on their face. As per the word curiosity, it can be seen in every age group of people and it’s not only for learning new things but in various ways for example cooking, washing, reading, etc.
Like other desires and need states that take on an appetite quality curiosity is linked with exploratory behaviour and experiences of reward. Curiosity can be described as positive emotions and acquiring knowledge; when one's curiosity has been aroused it is considered inherently rewarding and pleasurable. Discovering new information may also be rewarding because it can help reduce undesirable states of uncertainty rather than stimulating interest.
