Disillusionment: Embracing Change Through Lifelong Learning - Dolly Chandhoke


Reading the first chapter, Disillusionment, made me reflect on how quickly the world is changing and how uncertain the future can seem. Yuval Noah Harari explains that many of the ideas and systems people once depended on no longer provide clear answers to today’s global challenges. This made me realise that living in the 21st century requires flexibility, curiosity, and a willingness to keep learning.

One message that resonated with me is that knowledge alone is not enough. We must also develop the ability to think critically, question information, and adapt to new situations. In an age where technology, artificial intelligence, and globalisation are transforming every aspect of life, these skills are becoming essential.

I found this chapter especially meaningful. It reminded me that education should not focus only on teaching children facts and concepts. Our responsibility is to nurture confident, compassionate, creative, and resilient learners who are prepared for a future we cannot fully predict. Encouraging curiosity, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving from an early age is one of the best ways to prepare children for tomorrow’s world.

This chapter also reminded me of the importance of being a lifelong learner. As educators, we must continue to grow, embrace change, and model adaptability for our students. Rather than fearing uncertainty, we should see it as an opportunity to innovate, improve, and contribute positively to society.

Overall, Disillusionment is a thought-provoking introduction to the book. It challenges readers to move beyond outdated assumptions, remain open-minded, and develop the skills needed to navigate an increasingly complex world with wisdom, empathy, and resilience.

Introduction to Emerging Literacies and "21 Lessons for the 21st Century" by Yuval Noah Harari

Webinar summary for Literacy Project for Educators (07/04/2026)

Sandeep Dutt led an introductory session on the Emerging Literacies Program, focusing on Yuval Noah Harari’s book 21 Lessons for the 21st Century. The session commenced with a summary of the morning’s financial and food literacy workshops held in Ballia as part of a nationwide initiative by the Good Schools Alliance under the Learning Forward India Foundation. Dutt explained that the Emerging Literacies Program aims to prepare teachers for future challenges by emphasising communication, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking skills rather than traditional academic subjects.

The group read and discussed the book’s introduction, covering topics including technological change, political shifts, the nature of truth in the digital age, and the impact of emerging technologies on society. The session concluded with plans to continue reading the book chapter by chapter in future meetings. Participants were invited to join a WhatsApp group for ongoing discussions.

The sweet spot of learning is often nestled right in the messiness of struggle. Take math, for instance. Instead of handing students a formula on a platter, toss them into the deep end with a problem that demands that formula. They’ll flail, they’ll fail, but in that glorious mess, they’ll develop an intuition for the problem’s contours, a sense of what they’re missing. It’s like my engineering thesis all over again—the struggle was real, but the learning was pure gold.

Same deal with science experiments. Don’t give them the script; ask them to design the experiment. Let them trip over their own feet, make mistakes, and learn from the trenches. That’s where the real learning happens.

In the domain of creative writing, give students a prompt, let them write, and then hit them with some tough feedback. “This isn’t quite landing, is it?” Boom! Now they’re primed to absorb the techniques and structures that’ll take their writing to the next level. It’s not about teaching rules; it’s about solving problems they’ve encountered themselves.

Productive failure involves designing struggles that help students grow. Experts see deeper problem structures, while novices focus on surface-level aspects. Students design experiments, struggle with variables, and learn. Benefits include deeper understanding and resilience. The approach uses the Four A’s: Activation, Awareness, Affect, and Assembly. Teachers report impactful results, fostering growth and problem-solving skills. Struggles turn into real-life skills.

Three Mistakes in Traditional Learning and the Strategic Designs of Productive Failure

Three major failures of traditional learning approaches hinder deep, lasting knowledge acquisition.

The first failure is Failing to Remember (Retention). Learning focused on short-term memorization, like cramming for an exam, results in rapid forgetting over time, illustrating the Forgetting Curve. This knowledge is shallow and lacks the deep encoding required for long-term storage.

The second failure, Failing to Understand (Conceptual Grasp), occurs when learners master procedures without grasping the core concepts. For example, a student can calculate a value like standard deviation using a formula but cannot explain its meaning or real-world significance.

Finally, the most critical issue is Failing to Transfer (Application). Learners struggle to apply skills learned in one specific context (e.g., textbook physics problems) to new, non-routine scenarios (e.g., designing a device). The knowledge becomes “encapsulated” or trapped within its original domain, preventing its flexible application to novel problems.

Here comes the powerful strategic intervention of Productive Failure.

Productive Failure (PF): Reversing the Learning Sequence for Deep Understanding

Productive Failure is a strategic educational intervention that reverses the traditional learning sequence to foster deeper conceptual learning and knowledge transfer.

It operates in two phases:

Problem Solving (Struggle): Learners first tackle a complex, novel problem, generating various suboptimal solutions and failing to find the canonical answer.

Instruction (Consolidation): Explicit instruction follows, assembling the generated attempts into the correct, canonical conceptual knowledge.

This initial struggle is strategic, priming the mind through the Four A’s: Activation of prior knowledge, Awareness of knowledge gaps, positive Affect (curiosity), and the Assembly of fragmented ideas into a coherent model. Productive Failure ensures learning is robust by making failure a prerequisite for effective instruction.

Tapping into the Learning Potential of Situational Interest

An excellent example of situational interest can be presented with the matchstick puzzle.

The challenge is to move exactly one matchstick from an arrangement of “1 2 3 4” to reverse the order to “4 3 2 1.” Many people find this problem difficult to solve immediately. The video explains that even if you can’t find the solution, the very act of trying multiple moves and failing to find the correct one piques your interest and curiosity.

In this scenario, the uncertainty of not knowing the solution, combined with the challenge of the puzzle, triggers a temporary but strong desire to discover the answer. This immediate, context-bound arousal of interest is what the video refers to as situational interest.

Another example is a science class where the teacher wants to introduce the concept of density. Instead of starting with a lecture or definition, the teacher places several objects (a large wooden block, a small metal ball, a plastic toy, etc.) and a tub of water on a table. The teacher then simply asks the students, “Predict which of these objects will float and which will sink when placed in the water, and why?”

Students, having no prior instruction on density, will likely make predictions based on size or weight, which might not always be accurate. When they test their predictions and see some unexpected results—a small metal object sinking quickly, while a larger wooden object floats—their curiosity is immediately piqued due to the uncertainty and the defiance of their initial expectations. This “aha!” moment of disconfirmation creates a strong situational interest, making them highly motivated and curious to learn the actual scientific principles behind why objects float or sink.

A Multi-layered Approach to Maximize Learning and Embrace Productive Failure

A fundamental principle is minimizing computational load by simplifying tasks and calculations. This allows learners to concentrate on core concepts rather than complexity.

The second core area is designing your participation. This involves strategically choosing when to work alone and when to collaborate. Forming study groups, joining online forums, and attending workshops are suggested for building a strong support network. Preparation is key before any group activity to maximize benefits and activate prior knowledge.

Two powerful strategies for self-facilitation are introduced. Explaining a concept as if teaching it to someone else forces mental organization, identifies knowledge gaps, and strengthens memory. Hacking involves deliberately trying to find flaws or “break” an idea to understand its boundaries and improve its robustness. However, the video cautions that Productive Failure itself fails when badly designed.

Finally, the importance of designing your safe space for learning is emphasized. This environment treats mistakes as learning opportunities, fostering a growth mindset. Key elements include setting achievable goals, valuing effort over outcome, seeking feedback, and building support networks. While preparation is vital, the video acknowledges the role of luck through unexpected opportunities.

The main takeaway is a three-layered framework for Productive Failure: Task, Participation, and Social Surround/Safe Space.

A Journey Through Weather and Seasons: An Experiential Learning Story

My name is Vaidehi, and as an EVS teacher for Class 2, I always look for new ways to make learning meaningful and joyful for my students. This year, I faced a special challenge when we began the chapter Weather and Seasons. Many of my students, especially the lower-average and below-average learners, found the topic confusing. Words like “atmosphere,” “weather changes,” and “seasons” felt too abstract for them. Their puzzled faces made me realise that reading from the textbook alone would not help. I needed to find a more engaging path.

That was when I decided to use the power of experiential learning. Instead of explaining everything inside the classroom, I thought—why not bring the children closer to the concept itself? So, one fine morning, I gathered my Class 2 students and took them to the science lab. Their eyes lit up the moment they entered. For many of them, it was the first time experiencing the lab in this way, and the excitement itself became the beginning of deeper learning.

Inside the lab, I introduced them to a 3D model of the atmosphere. The colourful layers, the arrows showing wind movement, and the tiny sun model instantly caught their attention. I explained, slowly and visually, how the sun heats the earth, how air moves, and how clouds form. Instead of simply listening, the children could see and touch what we were talking about. This shifted the learning from imagination to experience.

Next, we spoke about weather changes—sunny, rainy, windy, cloudy, and cold days. I connected each type of weather to something they had personally felt: the warm sun on their face during assembly, the cool breeze of winter mornings, the sound of raindrops on the classroom window. Their little heads nodded eagerly as they realised they already understood weather—they just needed the words for it.

To make the topic even more engaging, I gave them a simple but exciting task: a weather survey. Armed with small worksheets, they asked teachers, helpers, and even senior students about the weather that day—Was it hot? Was it windy? Did it look like it might rain? This activity helped them observe, think, and record information like real young scientists. The sense of responsibility made them feel proud and involved.

Finally, we connected all these experiences to seasons. I explained how changes in weather over months create the seasons we know—summer, winter, monsoon, and spring. Suddenly, the chapter made sense to them. Their confusion turned into curiosity, and their curiosity turned into confidence.

The transformation was beautiful. Students who earlier struggled to answer even simple questions were now eagerly explaining weather types, giving examples, and sharing their observations. By the end of the week, the same children who once hesitated now felt empowered.

This experience reaffirmed my belief that when children experience learning, they understand it deeply. Through a simple visit to the science lab, a hands-on model, and a fun survey, the topic of Weather and Seasons turned into a memorable learning journey for my Class 2 students.

Assignment 2

Riding Both Boats: A Story of Strength, Struggle, and Self-Discovery

There was a time in my life when everything felt heavy. My personal life and my professional responsibilities seemed to pull me in two different directions, each demanding more than I thought I had to give. I often felt as if I were standing with one foot in each boat, both drifting apart, and I feared that at any moment, I would lose balance and fall into the water. Those were the vulnerable moments—moments when I questioned my own strength, my choices, and even my ability to continue being the teacher I wanted to be.

My role as a teacher had always been a source of joy. The bright smiles of my students, their doubts, their excitement for small activities—these things filled my day with purpose. But life outside the classroom was not always so predictable. Personal challenges would arrive without warning, leaving me overwhelmed. I began to doubt whether I could continue giving my best to the children who looked up to me. The fear of failing in both spaces started to cloud my confidence.

But somewhere within that chaos, I found a quiet moment of clarity. I realised that balancing life does not mean choosing one boat over the other. It means learning how to stand strong, even when the waves get rough. So instead of withdrawing, I began taking small steps. I allowed myself to breathe, to slow down, and to understand that it was okay to struggle. I reminded myself that every person—teacher or not—faces seasons of difficulty, and this was mine.

Slowly, I built a new rhythm. I learned how to manage my responsibilities with compassion for myself. I created boundaries where needed and gave myself permission to rest. On days when the weight felt too heavy, I leaned on small victories—a well-taught lesson, a student understanding a difficult concept, a quiet moment of peace at home. These became my stepping stones.

And something beautiful happened. As I began to steady myself, I realised that my struggles were shaping me into a stronger, more empathetic teacher. My students unknowingly became my motivation. Their innocence reminded me that every day was a new beginning. Their trust in me strengthened my belief that I could overcome my challenges—not by being perfect, but by being present.

Over time, I learned to ride both boats with confidence. I survived the imbalance, not by choosing one over the other, but by learning how to navigate both with grace. The failures I once feared became lessons. The vulnerabilities I hid became sources of resilience.

Today, I stand stronger—not because my life is perfect, but because I learned how to move forward even when it wasn’t. I continue to be an amazing teacher for my students because I now understand that strength is not the absence of struggle, but the courage to rise through it.

Assignment 3

The Day the Project Failed: A Story of Empathy in the Classroom

It was supposed to be a simple class project—something fun, creative, and exciting. My students had worked for days to prepare a small model for our EVS chapter. They were proud, hopeful, and eager to show their work. But on the morning of the presentation, something unexpected happened. The model they had built—so carefully and lovingly—collapsed right before the show. Pieces broke, colours smudged, and the room fell into stunned silence.

Some children froze. Others began to cry. A few blamed each other. In that moment, it wasn’t just a project that had failed—it was their confidence.

As their teacher, I could see how deeply this affected them. So instead of scolding or rushing to fix the model, I gathered them in a circle. I spoke softly, reminding them that failure is not the end of the story—it is the beginning of learning. I asked them how they felt, and one by one, they opened up: “I’m scared,” “I’m sad,” “I worked so hard,” “Now everyone will laugh.” Listening to them made me realise that this wasn’t a lesson about EVS anymore—it was a lesson about life.

I told them a simple truth: “Everyone fails. But what makes us strong is how we hold each other when something breaks—whether it’s a model or a heart.”

Slowly, I encouraged them to look around at their classmates. I asked, “Who needs help right now?” Immediately, small hands reached out to comfort the ones who were crying. One child brought tissues, another held a friend’s hand, while someone else picked up the broken pieces gently. In that moment, the classroom transformed—not into a place of disappointment, but into a space filled with empathy and sympathy.

Together, we rebuilt the model—not perfectly, but beautifully. Every child contributed something, and every child felt important. When the project was finally ready, they didn’t present it as a neat, flawless model. They presented it as a story of teamwork, courage, and kindness.

To my surprise, that imperfect project received more appreciation than any perfect one could. Parents and teachers could see the emotion behind it—the unity, the support, the resilience.

But more than any applause, what stayed with me was the transformation in my students. Through a moment of failure, they discovered the power of standing by each other. They learned that mistakes don’t define us—our response to them does. And from that day on, I knew that I wasn’t just teaching EVS—I was helping shape hearts that cared.

From Doubt to Triumph: My Journey of Turning Failure Into Strength

When I look back at my first year of teaching, I remember it not as a smooth beginning, but as a storm I had to survive. I entered the school with enthusiasm, dreams, and a heart full of hope. I believed I would instantly connect with every child, master every lesson, and impress every colleague. But reality walked in like an unexpected guest.

My classes didn’t always go the way I planned. Activities I thought were creative ended in confusion. The Worksheets I designed didn’t match the students’ levels. Some children struggled, some grew restless, and some simply didn’t respond. And slowly, whispers began drifting through the staff room—soft at first, then louder.

“Maybe she isn’t ready.”
“She’s trying, but she’s not performing well.”
“She needs more experience… maybe teaching isn’t her thing yet.”

Each comment felt like a small stone added to my heart. I began doubting myself. I questioned my ability, my efforts, and even my decision to become a teacher. I felt like I was walking alone through a corridor filled with eyes that judged before understanding.

But one evening, after a particularly difficult day, I sat alone in my empty classroom. The children’s drawings on the wall were slightly crooked, the chalk dust settled on my table, and the silence felt heavy. And yet, something inside me whispered, “You didn’t come this far to give up here.”

So I began observing my failures closely—not with fear, but with curiosity.

I studied where my lessons broke.
I understood which students needed more support.
I noticed when they got bored, overwhelmed, or confused.
I spoke to students individually. I listened—really listened—to their struggles.

And then, I transformed everything step by step.

I changed my teaching methods from textbook-based to activity-based.
I added stories, role-plays, games, demonstrations, and real-life examples.
I experimented with charts, puppets, 3D models, and hands-on learning.
I spent extra time with slow learners, breaking the topic into smaller pieces.
I replaced pressure with patience, and correction with compassion.

And something amazing happened.

The same students who once looked lost started raising their hands.
The same children who hesitated began answering confidently.
They smiled more, participated more, and began seeing learning as joy—not burden.

One day, during a class activity, a child looked up at me and said,
“Ma’am, you make learning easy. You’re my favourite teacher.”

At that moment, every failure felt worth it.

Slowly, my colleagues began noticing the change too.
The teacher they once doubted was now the one students connected with the most.
The teacher whose lessons were once questioned was now receiving appreciation.

Finding Success in Every Failure: A Teacher’s Perspective

Failure, whether in personal life or professional life, is often seen as a setback, but it can become one of the most productive turning points in our journey. As a teacher, I have learned that every failure carries a message—an opportunity to reflect, adjust, and grow. When we move in the right direction with clarity and purpose, failures do not stop us; instead, they guide us toward better decisions and stronger outcomes. They teach patience, resilience, and the courage to begin again.

In my professional life, moments of struggle in lesson planning, classroom management, or student engagement have pushed me to innovate. Each unsuccessful attempt has helped me understand my learners more deeply and refine my teaching methods. Personally, too, failures have strengthened my ability to balance responsibilities, manage emotions, and stay grounded.

By modelling this mindset for my students, I help them see that mistakes are not reasons to give up but stepping stones to success. I encourage them to analyse their errors, try new approaches, and believe in their potential. When children understand that failure is part of growth, they develop confidence, empathy, and perseverance.

In this way, both teacher and students move forward—stronger, wiser, and ready to achieve their best life.

Productive Failure (PF) is a teaching approach that encourages students to explore and learn from their mistakes. PF is an instructional design approach that encourages learners to engage with complex tasks, fostering deep learning through struggle and reflection. The three-layer model comprises Task, Participation, and Social Surround.
This review critically examines the application of these layers to enhance learning outcomes for schoolchildren.

Three Layers of the Productive Failure Design

The design consists of three interconnected layers, moving from the broadest context (Social Surround) to the core activity (Task):

1. Social Surround (Outer Layer)
This layer focuses on the social and motivational context for learning.

  • Set learning goals

  • Value effort over outcome

  • Debrief

  • Seek feedback

  • Seek affective support

  • Get inspired

  • Practice compassion

  • Acknowledge luck

This encompasses the supportive environment that facilitates learning. Teachers, peers, and resources play crucial roles.

  • Elements: Encouragement, resources, safe space for experimentation.

  • Benefits: Builds confidence and fosters resilience.

2. Participation (Middle Layer)
This layer focuses on how collaboration and interaction are structured.

Background

Failure is an inevitable part of the learning process, and it can be a powerful catalyst for awareness of knowledge gaps and learning. When individuals encounter failure, they are forced to confront their limitations and gaps in understanding, which can motivate them to learn and improve.

In the high-stakes environment of Indian secondary education, particularly for students in Classes 9 and 10 who stand at the cusp of pivotal board examinations, the notion of failure carries immense pressure and negative connotations. It is often perceived as an indictment of a student’s capability — a definitive endpoint rather than a formative stepping stone.

This cultural and pedagogical mindset fosters an environment of academic anxiety and risk aversion, where students prioritise rote memorisation of “correct” answers over conceptual exploration and genuine understanding. They learn what to think, but not how to think, especially when confronted with novel or complex problems where their initial attempts might be unsuccessful.

However, research in cognitive and educational psychology offers a counter-narrative: failure, when framed and managed constructively, can become a powerful catalyst for learning. It serves as a diagnostic tool, illuminating the precise boundaries of a learner’s knowledge and identifying points where understanding falters.

This concept, termed Productive Failure by Manu Kapur, suggests that allowing students to grapple with complex problems and fail initially—before receiving direct instruction—leads to deeper, more transferable learning. The act of failing compels the learner to engage actively with a problem, generate hypotheses, and recognise the specific knowledge gaps that need to be filled.

A knowledge gap is not merely the absence of information; it is the discrepancy between a learner’s current understanding and the desired conceptual state. Without encountering the limits of their knowledge through trial and error, students often suffer from illusions of competence—believing they understand far more than they actually do. Failure shatters this illusion and activates metacognitive processes—the ability to think about one’s own thinking.

Failure can be defined as the inability to achieve a desired goal or outcome. It occurs across contexts—education, workplace, or personal life.
