To Copy or Not to Copy Part 1

Learning Forward Saturday

The meeting centred on reflections and discussions on adolescent behaviour, particularly the chapter “Right vs. Wrong” and the upcoming chapter “To Copy vs. Not to Copy.” Sneha Pundir shared reflections on alienation, emphasising that punitive measures such as detention can exacerbate disconnection. Anurag Tripathi’s reflection underscored the importance of empathy and trust in schools to prevent high-risk behaviours. The discussion also addressed the impact of peer pressure and the need for healthy coping mechanisms. Roma’s story in the chapter illustrated the importance of honesty and effective learning techniques, such as associating information with personal milestones.

What it Takes to Have “Happy Teachers.”

As we are talking of Emerging Literacies, I took a shot to have Gemini AI mode take a deep dive into our Blog:

Here is a comprehensive synopsis of the Blog [The Teachers Academy] (https://www.happyteacher.in/) based on the provided records. [1]

## Blog Synopsis & Core Mission

The Teachers Academy is an educational blog curated by Sandeep Dutt, founder of the Good Schools Alliance. The platform champions a “culture of learning” by focusing on professional training, teacher-led growth, and holistic student development.

Its core framework is built around the “Three Rs”—Reading, Reflection, and Relationships—to cultivate “Happy Teachers” who can confidently guide the next generation. [1, 2, 3]

------------------------------

## Key Blog Highlights

•  Professional Learning Programs: Offers structured teacher training focusing on staff leadership development, literacy projects, and the “Joy of Learning” initiative.

•  The “6 Cs” Framework: Trains educators to implement Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, Character, and Citizenship into daily lesson plans. [2]

•  Immersive Retreats: Features educator reflections from interactive workshops, like the Learning Forward Retreat in Dehradun, which prioritise creative group thinking and safe, failure-positive classroom spaces. [4]

•  The 4S Framework: Promotes student empowerment through a balance of Service, Skill, Sport, and Study. [3]

------------------------------

## Popular Posts

•  “Reflections: Good Schools Alliance Learning Forward Retreat”: A first-hand testimonial by an educator highlighting how creative flipcharts and collaborative reading deepen a teacher’s purpose.

•  “[The Courage To Be Happy?]: summarising masterclass summarising psychological strategies to act authentically and establish mutual trust in education. [5]

•  “Breaking The Education Caste-System; Barriers To Contentment”: A thought-provoking exploration into dismantling rigid structures like logic vs. art and left vs. right brain thinking.

•  “Better Health and Fitness at School”: A post showcasing comprehensive, school-wide fitness programs designed to maintain physical and mental well-being.

------------------------------

## What it Takes to Have “Happy Teachers.”

According to the Blog’s ethos and masterclass resources, nurturing happy teachers requires shifting away from strict, high-pressure environments toward holistic support systems: [3]

•  System Over External Management: Giving educators autonomy and self-acceptance, encouraging them to look within for strength rather than relying strictly on top-down regulations.

•  Horizontal Relationships: Establishing equal peer-to-peer relationships across school faculties to replace heavy vertical hierarchies, fostering an atmosphere of shared trust.

•  Practical & Multidisciplinary Literacy: Empowering teachers with skills extending beyond textbooks, such as financial literacy, food literacy, and emerging tech tools like AI.

•  A Culture of Safe Failure: Permitting both teachers and students to make mistakes safely, which naturally removes the fear of being “wrong” and builds professional self-esteem. [4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]

Do you have The Courage To Be Happy?

 Summary by Fathom

This was the final Masterclass session in which the group discussed the concluding chapter of their book study, focusing on themes of re-choosing one’s lifestyle, love, self-reliance, and the courage to be happy. Gurdeep led the discussion through Adler’s philosophical concepts of love as an act of faith and courage, emphasising that true happiness comes from contributing to others and cultivating a sense of community rather than seeking an easy life. At the end of the session, Gurdeep announced that the masterclass would take a break during June and resume on July 4 with a new book titled “Human Edge in the World of AI.”

Meeting Summary:
1. Reflections on Love and Relationships
• Gurdeep Kaur discusses the end of a relationship and the compromises made within it.
• The conversation explores the nature of love, happiness, and the responsibilities that come with relationships.
• The importance of courage in love is emphasised, suggesting that true love requires commitment and the willingness to face challenges together.

2. Philosophical Insights on Happiness
• The discussion highlights that love is essential for achieving self-reliance and community feeling.
• Gurdeep Kaur stresses that real happiness comes from loving others rather than seeking an easy life.
• The idea that one contributes to others simply by being present is introduced, challenging the notion that contribution requires visible actions.

3. Final Meeting and Future Steps
• The meeting is concluded as the final session of the book study.
• Participants are encouraged to apply Adler’s ideas in their lives and to update them for contemporary relevance.
• Gurdeep Kaur emphasises the importance of building meaningful relationships now to ensure a satisfactory parting in the future.
• The conversation ends with a call to action, encouraging participants to embrace chaos and continue their journey in the real world.

Key takeaway from today’s reading of the last chapter of the book The Courage To Be Happy: “The answers should not be something you get from someone else, but something you arrive at on your own.”

Enjoyed the reading session led by Gurdeep ma’am and Sandeep sir. This will stay with me forever.

Right vs Wrong, how do we handle teenage challenges - Part 1

Learning Forward Saturday

To read and discuss a chapter from “Wanted Back-bencher, Last-ranker Teacher,” chapter 6, Right vs Wrong.

Key Takeaways

  • Proactive Intervention: Roma’s calm, immediate rescue of four intoxicated students from a dangerous club prevented harm, demonstrating decisive teacher responsibility.

  • Empathetic Guidance: Roma guided the students’ safe exit with clear, empowering instructions (“Hold your head high”) rather than scolding, building trust and respect.

  • Collaborative Resolution: The school’s mature response—a private meeting with only Roma and the counsellor—protected the students from intimidation and focused on support.

  • AI for Professional Growth: Sandeep introduced an AI assistant to generate summaries and allow teachers to ask questions about their own contributions, promoting self-reflection.

Topics

Teacher Reflections & Context

  • The session began with a reflection from Sunita Tripathi on the “Like vs. Unlike” chapter.

  • Sunita’s Experience:

    • Problem: Peer pressure led to mocking, causing emotional distress among students.

    • Solution: Sunita used calm dialogue to explain the difference between joking and insulting. A class discussion and group activity on positive words transformed the atmosphere.

    • Lesson: Patience and positive guidance are crucial for helping adolescents learn from mistakes.

  • Related Book Session: Sandeep promoted the Thursday 5:30 PM session for “Every Last Girl” by Safina Husain, which covers the “Educate Girls” initiative.

Chapter 6: Right vs. Wrong

  • The Incident:

    • Roma received a panicked call from student Rupa.

    • Four girls (Rupa, Simmi, Supriya, Patricia) were at “Club Paradise.”

    • Simmi was heavily intoxicated (“tipsy”) from beer and a neat vodka shot.

  • Roma’s Response:

    • Roma immediately drove to the club with her father, Sunil.

    • She entered the smoky, crowded club alone to find the girls.

    • She gave clear, empowering instructions for their exit: “Keep your back straight... Hold your head high.”

    • When a man grabbed Simmi, Roma, a black belt, punched him to create an escape route.

  • Aftermath & Resolution:

    • The girls were driven home; Simmi stayed at Roma’s house.

    • Simmi’s home situation (separated parents, caregiver only) was revealed as a potential factor.

    • Roma informed the girls that their parents would be contacted, framing it as support rather than punishment.

    • School’s Mature Handling: The principal arranged a private meeting with only Roma and the counsellor (Uttera) to avoid intimidating the parents.

AI Assistant for Professional Development

  • Sandeep introduced an AI assistant to enhance learning and professional growth.

  • Functionality:

    • Provides session summaries, key takeaways, and screenshots.

    • Allows teachers to ask questions about their own contributions, promoting self-reflection.

  • Purpose: To use AI for genuine learning and skill development, not for academic shortcuts.

Next Steps

  • All Participants: Write a reflection on Chapter 6, focusing on how the story influenced your thinking and how you might apply its lessons in your classroom.

  • All Participants: Send reflections to Manisha.

  • All Participants: Join the Thursday 5:30 PM session for “Every Last Girl” if interested.

  • All Participants: Use the AI assistant link (in Zoom chat) for summaries and self-reflection.

  • All Participants: Join the “Saturday 3 PM” WhatsApp group via the link in the Zoom chat.

Reflections from the 2024 Masterclass - Ankit Verma

What makes a school?
A school is more than just a building with classrooms; it's a place where dreams are nurtured, and personalities are shaped. In the context of the book Wanted Back Bencher and Last Ranker Teacher, a school is defined by its diverse students, each with unique strengths and challenges. The story highlights how a supportive teacher can turn the so-called "Back-Bencher" into a star, emphasizing the importance of encouragement and understanding in education. A genuine school is a space for growth, where students and teachers learn from each other, overcoming obstacles and celebrating achievements together.

War vs Peace
A school is more than just a place for academic lessons; values are instilled, friendships are formed, and future leaders are shaped. In the context of the book Wanted Back Bencher and Last Ranker Teacher, a school is portrayed as a space where every student, regardless of rank or behaviour, has the potential to thrive. The story focuses on the transformative journey of a "Back-Bencher," often overlooked in a classroom, and how an understanding and patient teacher can spark a change. The teacher, who is willing to go beyond textbooks, believes in the unique capabilities of each student, fostering a sense of worth and belonging. This relationship is at the heart of what makes a school truly special. A school is not just about grades; it's about creating an environment where students feel valued, supported, and encouraged to reach their fullest potential.

Love Learning Vs Hate Learning
Love and hatred towards learning can shape a student's school experience. When students love learning, they are excited to explore new subjects, ask questions, and engage in discussions. This enthusiasm fuels curiosity and helps them succeed academically. In contrast, when learning is hated, it feels like a chore. Negative experiences, like boring lessons or lack of encouragement, can lead to disengagement and low motivation. In a classroom, a teacher plays a vital role in nurturing the love for learning by making lessons interactive, relatable, and fun. Students who feel supported and inspired will likely embrace challenges and enjoy their educational journey. A school environment that fosters a love for learning helps students excel academically and equips them with the skills to continue learning beyond the classroom. A positive mindset makes all the difference in the world of education.

Affection vs Rejection
Affection versus rejection plays a crucial role in shaping a student's experience in the classroom, as highlighted in the book Wanted Back Bencher and Last Ranker Teacher. Affection in a classroom environment creates a sense of belonging and motivation. Even struggling students feel valued and empowered to improve when teachers show care and encouragement. On the other hand, rejection—whether through neglect, harsh criticism, or indifference—can profoundly affect a student's self-esteem and willingness to participate. The story of the "Back-Bencher" and the "Last-Ranker" emphasizes how affection from a dedicated teacher can transform these students, helping them rise above their challenges. In a school, fostering an atmosphere of support and empathy is essential, as it encourages students to open up, engage, and develop their potential. Affection nurtures growth, while rejection stifles it, making a difference in a student's journey.

A thought about reflections - Brinda

Our sessions of Masterclass are unique. Unique, because we train only through our discussions about the books we read together. There is no class, no board work, no notes and above all no examinations!

As I reflect on our sessions, what I have noticed is that regardless of the intentions of the author, the texts we read have different meanings and significance to each one of us. Our interpretations are bound by our own background and by personal, social, cultural and historical contexts in which we find ourselves,

The author of the book that we are currently reading, 'Wanted Back-bencher Last Ranker Teacher', portrays the characters as per her social background, ethics and understanding of students, parents and school systems. All reflections by our participant trainees convey different interpretations bringing to mind, the statement by John Dewey that to understand something is to see it in relation to other things. To understand something is not to gain knowledge but to able to draw inferences about the what, the how and the why of a thing. Finally, the test of understanding is about applying concepts and principles to life situations.

Developing perspectives can only happen with metacognitive awareness. The way we see meaning in between lines rather than in the lines literally, shapes our understanding and plays a crucial role in developing our own philosophy.

Every reflection makes us question our own beliefs and makes us realise that learning never stops as long as one has the humility to accept that.

What School Means To Me - Vijeta Wilson

"School where dreams are nurtured and futures are shaped."

Photo- Vijeta Wilson
I can't express my thoughts but it's really amazing teaching in the same school where I studied. It's a very special experience. I can't imagine how meaningful it is to be able to give back to the school that played a significant role in shaping my life and I am glad to teach in my Alma mater!

It's a basic need of every individual. It can be different things for different people. For young ones, it's a place of learning and growth in a healthy environment. Where students discover their passions and talents, laying the foundation for their upcoming future. But for me as a teacher, school is coming out of your shell and exploring the world

Sunbeam Indiranagar is the first platform of my teaching career and it's been 13 + years in this institution but I can still feel the potential to learn and grow professionally. For me, this place is full of opportunities. It inspires me to educate young minds and shape the future by imparting and inculcating valuable lessons.

Every day I get up in the morning with positive thoughts and reach school with full potential to experience another day with students. In my view, being a teacher is the most rewarding and fulfilling profession that allows me to make a difference in their life.

In my view, whatever our profession is, it doesn't matter at all. School days are the best days of our lives.

Courage and Patience Part 1 - KNPS Phagwara

Composed by: Pooja Bawa <poojabawa96@gmail.com>

Assignment: Courage and Patience

Write/develop 2 Reflection pieces:

Think of two (2) situations where you as an educator were faced with (preferably real)/might face the challenge of dealing with:

1. A Fearful Student
2. An Impatient Student

How did/will you deal with the student?
A) If it was a real-life situation, were you successful in helping him/her overcome their problem?
B) What is your advice to educators who want to inculcate these values in their students?

Reflection Piece 1: Dealing with a Fearful Student

Situation:
During my time as an educator, I encountered a fearful student who was struggling to participate in class discussions and activities. The student appeared visibly anxious and hesitant to engage with peers and express his thoughts.

Recognising the importance of creating a safe and supportive learning environment, I prioritised addressing the student's fears and helping him overcome his challenges.

Approach:
First and foremost, I approached him with empathy and understanding. I had one-on-one conversations with him to understand his fears and concerns.

Outcome:
His confidence and active participation in class significantly improved. He began to offer insightful contributions during discussions and even volunteered to lead small group activities.

Advice to Educators:
To help fearful students overcome their challenges, educators should consider the following:
1. Foster a safe and supportive environment
2. Establish a personal connection
3. Gradual exposure and positive reinforcement
4. Encourage risk-taking and learning from mistakes

Reflection Piece 2: Dealing with an Impatient Student

Situation:
As an educator, I encountered an impatient student who consistently exhibited signs of impatience during class, often interrupting others and becoming frustrated when tasks required more time or effort than she anticipated.

Approach:
I began by having a private conversation with her to address her impatience. I wanted to understand
the underlying reasons behind her impatience and identify any specific triggers. To address these challenges, I implemented several strategies.

Courage propels us, like a wild hurricane. It fuels our dreams, empowers us to soar, To conquer mountains, and unlock every door.

With courage as our ally, we face the unknown, Embracing challenges, seeds of greatness sown. For in every heart, there lies a flame untamed, Waiting for courage to ignite, unashamed.

Post by Chahat Sharma <chaahatsharma2@gmail.com>

---
Courage and patience are two sides of a coin,
Together they make a person who can join,
The fight for what is right and true,
And wait for the right time to pursue it.

So, be brave and patient, my friend,
And never let your spirit bend.
For courage and patience will see you through,
And lead you to a life that's bright and new.

Honesty and Respect - Monika Vaishnav

Respect can not be defined in one word, we can see respect in many things. Respect is giving values or admiring other's views even if they are totally different from yours. Respect is appreciating the differences. Every person should have self-respect for herself or himself. It helps us to maintain our dignity. We should have respect for our elders as well as for our younger. We can show respect for others by taking care of them, being polite and honest with them.

We can give them respect by listening to their opinions and understanding them.  We can't ask anybody to give respect, it comes with good deeds and good behaviour.

Honesty means being true to ourselves as well as others like friends, family, work etc. We should have respect for our work, that will make us punctual towards our work and will qualify it.

Honesty and respect are like reflections of each other because when we have respect for something, we become honest towards that and it doesn't matter, whether it is a person or work.  It also makes our relationship stronger. Same as if somebody does his work honestly, respect comes automatically.

We must motivate children to be honest in life and respectful towards others by giving them small tasks. We should set an example in front of them so that they can see and learn from us. We should encourage the children to speak the truth even if they are wrong and when they confess their mistake we must appreciate their courage and also correct them so that they don't repeat it and can avoid such lies.

When We Change, The World Changes

Soul Reflections

Visualise waking up tomorrow morning, absolutely contented. Satisfied with everything - God, our life, family, food, home, job, friends, money, comforts, city. Accepting myself, people, situations, traffic, pollution, weather, as they are. Admiring the beauty and uniqueness in every speck of creation. Savouring morning cup of tea, discharging duties with a smile, enjoying every interaction, sending a blessing to everyone, relishing food, focusing only on the good, welcoming surprises, remaining hopeful even in a hopeless situation - simply living it up with faith and love. How different will my tomorrow be from my today?

My quality of life will rise a few notches because I choose to change my tomorrow, and it starts with one thought - of contentment for everything I have. My thought triggers a pleasant feeling, an attitude of gratitude, right actions and soothing behaviour. So I send positive energy to my body, to people and the universe, influencing all three - so my health improves, relationships become harmonious, and I contribute to world peace. If I repeat this the next day and the next, what started as CHANGES IN ME, WILL CHANGE MY WORLD. Also, I am always one thought away from changing my world.

My world is not somewhere out there. It starts from within me, from my thoughts. I the being, constantly radiate my energy into the world. So if I emerge the divinity within, the world changes. If I heal someone with my love, the world changes. If I stand up for morals, the world changes. If I reconcile with my past, the world changes. When I go step out into the outer world in this state, my every action will reflect the flavour of my inner world.

As angels, we are agents of change. Let us influence our family, country, and the entire humanity, one day at a time by transforming ourselves. Let our collective energy of goodness envelop the planet to bring a change and bring in the Golden Age - Satyug.
