Hope and Friendship- Rohin and Buzo

"Dogs teach us a very an important lesson in life: The mailman is not to be trusted"- Sian Ford

For centuries, dogs have been labelled as "man's best friend," offering companionship and loyalty to their human counterparts. This is evident in the life of Rohin who had a dog named, Buzo. Buzo used to play, love, and take care of Rohin. As time passed on, Buzo became a member of the family and a close buddy, especially to Rohin.

Buzo was the alpha dog of their house. Whenever Rohin came after his work, he used to hug him tightly. It was the love and friendship between them that could not be explained. Buzo was so adorable that it never gave up on his master cum friend.

 One night, there came a thief to the house to catch hold of the money. But he saw the dog and thought if he could take the dog too and sell it in order to get more money. Thus, with a lot of difficulties, he dognapped Buzo. The next day when the family realized the fact, they started looking vigorously for Buzo.

The police gave them a crime number and ran a search on the facts given by the family, but nothing came up. Rohin used to sleep on the sofa night after night with the windows open, hoping to hear his bark. He believed that there is light despite the darkness.

Then, after three months, Rohin found a photo of Buzo on a Facebook account: a dog dealer was advertising him for sale. He looked terribly skinny. Rohin had to do something. He sent the dealer a message using a fake profile, “I would like to buy the dog at any price offered by you.” He replied saying about the price and the place to come to take the dog.

When Rohin and the mother reached the spot with the police, they couldn’t bear to look. Rohin heard his mother saying, “It’s definitely Buzo.” Rohin opened the boot to get his lead and suddenly Buzo broke free from the dealer and leapt into the car. Rohin got in next to him, sobbing with joy and sadness. He was skeletal and smelled awful. He looked at Rohin and wagged his tail a couple of times, then began shaking. He then crawled into Rohin’s lap and pushed his head inside his coat.

The family was really happy. Buzo never gave up on his master which is hence proved by this incident. He regained the weight he lost. Later, the dealer and the thief were caught and put into jail for their crimes. Buzo became even dearer to everyone’s heart including the police. He was a loyal dog who got escaped by his close friend from the clutches of the man who tried to sell him.

After a couple of years, Buzo died but it was still remembered by Rohin and the family. He remained in his heart forever. The bond he had with the dog began the moment he came into his life and never stopped growing. Rohin told his mother, “a dog is a selfless friend, who gives away his/her life expecting nothing in return but an ample amount of love. Buzo was just like that.” Rohin knew the fact that there is nothing truer than the love showered by man's best friend, dog.

Minutes

1. Meeting was called to order at 2.15 pm by GAHS President-Ishita. She proceeded to introduce GAHS for the benefit of new members.

The Gold Award Holders’ Society registered on March 8, 2010 is the premier Alumni network for Gold Holders in India. With the motto of Cherishing Service and Relationship (CSR), GAHS is an effort to create more awareness about the Award in our country and to rope in exuberant Award Holders, who feel for the Award and are keen to give back, GAHS exists for the provision, promotion and preservation of the International Award in India. The GAHS Office runs currently from the National Office but has presence all across the country. With Honorary Secretaries currently in the West and East Zones, for better administration, communication and growth of the Award, GAHS will function as a completely independent setup to assist in alumni relations and growth of the Award Programme as per the Strategic Plan of the National Office.

2. Ishita asked all Executive Committee Members to introduce themselves. The Executive Committee features Award Holders from over the years so that there is diversity of experiences for best possible growth. To supplement GAHS’ efforts to round up maximum members across the country, enthusiastic Award Holders and otherwise have been identified and made Honorary Executive Secretaries. So far from the East Zone, Bivujit Mukhoty, from the West- Juzer Shaikhally and recently from the South- Sridhar Lakshmanan are the Honorary Secretaries.

Ishita proceeded to ask all individual members to introduce themselves and say a few words about their Award experiences. This exercise reflected the great experiences that the Award allows every young people.

Most people felt that the Award is the complete package for enhancing personality, to grow in a well-rounded manner. There were several comments from members who have completed all Award levels that they had experiences of a lifetime. Residential and Service Projects particularly allowed them to improve their personalities, become a team worker, learn about new things, and overcome fears through fun learning. Some felt that it is absolutely necessary to become volunteers to promote the Award in their schools, localities in an effort to allow more young people to go on self-discoveries, think beyond marks and academics and cherish the importance of small things.

3. GAHS organised the first GAHS Summit on 23^rd December, 2009 in New Delhi. This first effort brought together some Gold Holders from generations and introduced to them the National Strategic Plan for the growth of the Award Programme in the next three years. With the challenge to grow, especially in the 18-25 age groups, and introduce half a million young Indians to the Award, garnering Gold Holders, the best ambassadors for the Programme, as volunteers and Award Leaders will successfully create a network of people trained to ensure quality and service our society.

Since, volunteers at the National Office have worked towards the registration of the Society with the Registrar of Societies in India and with the efforts of Accountant- Mr. Sunil Trehan of Sunil Trehan & Co., GAHS was registered on March 8, 2010.

Over a few small meetings with the President, Treasurer and GAHS Members an event to bring together Award Holders, Award partners and potential partners from education, government, corporate and social sectors was felt necessary. The CSR Summit held on June 23, 2010 was successful in bringing together different stakeholders of the Award Programme to collaboratively engage youth in our society.

4. Sunil Trehan, Sunil Trehan & Co. Was approved as auditor for GAHS. Audited statements will be made available soon. Every member of GAHS can look at statements on formal request.

5. Plan ahead: working together on future programmes for networking and Award development

Some ideas put forward and agreed on included

·       Annual/bi-annual  events like a trek or Residential Projects or Service projects for GAHs in collaboration with Volunteer Organisations and/or Service Providers

o   Each zone can do pilots on a section of the Award Programme

o   Events like music concerts that may help provide finances to sustain future events. International exchanges/events can follow once we can prove sustainability.

·       GAHS Members as Award Ambassadors NEED to talk about the Award to create more visibility

o   Share Award stories and experiences on all Public Relations/Communications Mediums. As PR/Communications are at a nascent stage, it is important to lay ground work collectively and record Award stories to National Communications Team

o   Try to help Bronze, silver to complete Gold and to ensure better Gold completion rates in Award units in all zones.

o   To create more word about the Award, get young professionals/interns involved in Communications and PR strategy.

Confirmations to work together- every member present committed to give support and introduce atleast 5 other Gold Holders to register with GAHS in the next one year

The meeting concluded with all members sharing their Goals for the year. T-shirts for all Gold Holders were distributed and new Gold Awardees headed for the Presentation Ceremony at the Vice President of India, Residence. 

This is a true copy of the minutes and the list of Members of the Society present exists on the Register on record, at the NAA Office.

Volunteers back in action!

The happy team is back... 3rd July 2010, the volunteer Gold Holders have kicked off a new season for the Award in India. Same month in 2009, IAYP India formally launched the Volunteer inititives at the national office, as the Delhi University now reopens, we are all set to bring on board new energy.

The meeting was attended by Saachi, Pranay, Tripti, Ankit, Neha, Nivedia and Atom too. Ideas were floated and plans are afoot for 2010-11; events, administering and buildng the GAHS was the key agenda. The Gold Holders and Volunteers will meet every Saturday at 3.00 PM at 'the studio' and work to engaging youth in society.

Dear Award Friends and Supporters;

This is an open letter to all our Award Units and Volunteers, first to thank them for the continued support for the Award Programme, and to apprise all that IAYP India is now all set to grow from strength to strength.

India is youth and youth is India!
A young nation, with the largest youth force in the world, poised to make this century ours. Brand India today is the flavour of the season, the meteoric rise of the services sector and the need for knowledge capital has made India shine on the world map, and this is the opportunity for the Award Programme to build on.

Not many are perhaps aware that the Award Programme in India commenced in the year 1962, and am certain near 2,00,000 lac or maybe more, have either participated or volunteered to build the programme over the years. Some say the Award Programme is perhaps the best kept secret!

A conscious effort is being made by the full Award team to roll out the Development Plan 2010 – 2013, and build up to 5,00,000 participants in the near future. A big capacity building and training initiative is in the offing; the focus now is not only on the 14 -18 year olds at schools, but also on the 18 – 25 in the colleges, corporate and social organizations. We need to work with a mission to bridge the social divide and help young Indians live their dreams.

The national office is now functional and the first Open Award Centre, for the college going and other youth was inaugurated at Sri Aurobindo Society in New Delhi, on the 5th of September 2009, to commemorate Teachers Day and keep the spirit of the ‘guru’ vibrant.

Draft Development Plan

Aim
Make IAYP a premier youth programme for inclusive social growth.

How we will do this?
1. Set up Open Award Centres – to facilitate build up of Volunteers and encourage the participation of youth in the 18 - 25 age groups.

2. Programme inclusion by enrolling more students from vernacular / government schools, from the current near 375 largely private sector schools.

3. Raise the annual enrollments for the program from 15000 to 500,000 in Year 3 of operation

4. Set in place a mechanism for fund raising; have a Friends of the Award.

5. Partner with other NGOs, Volunteer groups and even look at the PPP Model for build up. Use the CSR approach and the Community outreach.

6. Set up a national centre that can undertake training for volunteers and award leaders from India and the APAC (ASIA PACIFIC) region.

The role out … steps up the ladder!

1. Plan that raises enrollments in the following stages:

Year 1:
70,000 (set forth the seed in model government and vernacular schools; spend time in getting model right for mass implementation; work out sponsorships/ third party funding routes)
Year 2:
200,000 (massive rollout, focus on timely and accurate implementation on a mass scale)
Year 3:
500,000 (massive rollout)

This has to be broad based in terms of geography, mix of students, gender. Should not be heavily biased towards anyone area.

Before connecting with anyone formally, need to have a mapped out visual strategy with names of schools, targeted enrolment in that school, and geographical location of that school. The strategy needs to be that detailed instead of just a large number that the team chases.

2. Set-up volunteer committees that comprise eminent personalities (who actually work!) in the following streams:

A. Industry
Representatives from one or two industry bodies such as CII, TiE etc., banking industry (SBI)

The Industry body will communicate with their member/affiliate network in procuring assignments for the volunteers across different industries/service firms as well as tap on to the CSR initiatives of different business entities across India. You will need to create programs that dovetail into these organizations. For example -- SBI is BIG on rural banking and reaches out to many communities in far off areas. But one will need to come up with a plan specifically for SBI so that they can absorb students in bulk.

B. Brand and Communication
Youthful Brand ambassadors that are publicly known who actually completed the course, Branding and Communication specialists including those in non English streams, one or two large media houses that can provide coverage for free across regional media.

The Brand and Communication team will be responsible for creating brand awareness of IAYP, keeping a strong communication with existing enrollments to further awareness within the student community, work on media coverage across modes of media, create content namely brochures/pamphlets to reach out to government/vernacular schools in the latter language.

C. Educationists
Eminent hardworking educationists; who have the clout / connect with leading government / private education systems.

The Educationists will be people who are well connected to schools across different geographies and can open doors for you. This has to dovetail into the numbers/geographies that you are tapping in the strategy highlighted above.


3. AIESEC and its partners owe their success to the strong affiliate network they have in the form of corporate partners. This is the weak chain in your current set up.

Some potential partners, besides the industrial groups can be: --

Pratham...www.janaagraha.org. Ramesh Ramanathan is doing an outstanding job.

4. The national centre has to be one fixed place that is needed 365 days a year, but at start could NOT be a fixed place; can be used as and when the need arises for a program.

Would consider approaching a large corporate that might have a large vacant hall that they can lend for these activities.

The option of doing an Open Award Centre at the SACAC (Sri Aurobindo Centre of Arts and Communication) Delhi Campus.

Alternatively have a foundation backed by a large group such as the Azim Premji Foundation (www.azimpremjifoundation.org) to come forward and lend support to the program and take branding as an output for them self in turn.
