Smile Vs Frowns- Sunbeam School Indiranagar

"Frowns create wrinkles; smiles create memories"

A teacher's smile not only motivates students but also creates a safe and positive learning environment.
To understand your thoughts in more detail, I would like to highlight a few points:

Introverted students: A teacher's smile can act as a motivation for introverted students. It boosts their confidence and encourages them to speak up.

Open atmosphere: When a teacher is stress-free and listens to students'; ideas with an open heart, students also speak up without any fear. This creates an atmosphere where students can think and express themselves freely.

Teacher's mood: ki Children are very sensitive and they easily understand the mood of people around them. A teacher's mood directly affects students' learning and development.

Effect of stress: When a teacher is stressed, students become indecisive and are afraid to speak up. This weakens their confidence and disrupts the learning process.

Positive impact: A teacher's smile fills students with positive energy and motivates them to learn. It also helps in building a strong bond between students and teacher.

Conclusion:
A teacher's smile is not only an academic tool but also a powerful social tool. It plays a vital role in the personality development of students and motivates them to become successful individuals.

Hope and Friendship - Jaspreet Kaur

A student who has lost all hope

If it was a real-life situation, were you successfully helping him/her overcome their problem?

Hope is the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best. As an educator, every day comes across several incidents where students lose hope. Here I will tell one real-life incident where a grade V student lost hope and how I motivated her and brought a smile to her face.

Incident- In Grade V, one new girl student was admitted. When she spoke something, she fumbled a lot. There was some medical health issue. When she joined our school, a group of students laughed at her in class. The next period was mine. I asked that girl, "Why are you crying?"

She explained everything to me. Firstly, I counselled those students not to make fun of others; they wrote apology letters too. Lat,  I hugged her tightly. Then, I started to appreciate the girl whenever she gave an answer. Whether the answers were not right sometimes, all students still enjoyed her by clapping. Gradually, I observed that girl always had a smile on her face. She is an intelligent girl, and her percentage drastically improved that year. I brought candies on her birthday in Grade V and distributed them in class. I told her that her father had sent those candies for her. When she went back home, she came to know the truth. Now, the girl is on senior campus in Grade VIII, but she still messages me on special occasions and always calls me if she needs help.

Outcome- I acted as a facilitator and friend and was ultimately successful in helping her to overcome her problem.

A student with no friends in school

What is your advice to educators who want to inculcate these values in their students?

Friendship is a state of enduring affection, esteem, intimacy, and trust between two people. In all cultures, friendships are important relationships throughout a person's life span.

Incident- In the middle of the session, one boy got admission to Grade V. He came from a village. Other students are studying together in Grade Nursery.

This new admission student boy could not adjust to the new environment in a new place. He is below average student. I have already made a buddy system in my class. I made buddies and seating arrangements for new students with the class monitors. Now he can read all languages with confidence. It's near about three months now. Now all students in my class talk to him in a  friendly way. He shares all his problems with his new friend. He is very delighted to be here in our school.

Advice- The teacher should appreciate and always try to motivate students for their excellent work. They should also encourage them to develop pro-social behaviour. Students should be taught to help and be kind and honest with others. Values-based education is an essential part of student's lives; it establishes an environment that allows them to grow in their academics, social and expertise. Values help in the formation of positive thinking. It helps in developing understanding and relationships between students and teachers. It also enhances attitudes and ways of looking at situations that allow them to achieve their objectives and success in all the ups and downs. Responsibilty and Cooperation - Shalini Solanki

Responsibility is an essential value as it makes us more focused, goal-oriented, confident and accountable. One cannot succeed without having this quality. It makes a person sorted, away from chaos. Even in challenging situations, a responsible person knows how to stay calm and deal with them. They invest more time in finding solutions and fixing mistakes instead of blaming the time, situation and others. Responsible people motivate not only themselves but also everyone around them.

Making students responsible in school:
Students learn values not by reading, listening or talking about them but by experiencing an environment where they get to live them. Teachers are critical in every student’s life; their teachers are always right and know everything.

I remember an instance in my class from this session. Children used to keep their other subject books/ notebooks every morning on my table in a very casual manner that would scatter the entire table (I sometimes had to remind them to keep the books on my table). I would then bifurcate them according to different subjects and keep them in the designated cupboards. My students observed for a few days and got an idea of being responsible for their own things. They gradually started keeping the books, not on my table but in the cupboard in the most organised manner without reminding them. Now, they clean their own table before each period or go out of the class for any activity. They saw, they learned.

Self Reinvent - Richa Solanki

There is a phase in your life when you may need to learn how to reinvent yourself. This could come when you experience big things. If you are going through a major situation in your life or facing some challenges you may have to find new ways of thinking or doing things or take a risk.  You can also achieve this only when you take a leap of faith and make things happen for yourself.

Although it is important that you learn to rely on yourself when facing any challenge, it is also important to have a support of anyone who motivates and guide us if anyone is not, then be yourself motivator and this thing will come into your mind when you give a boost to your mind when things get too tough and to correct you when you’re making mistakes.

It is different between independence and dependence. Don’t be afraid to be sharing the difficulties you’re facing. When you open up, you’ll find the people who are really going to be there for you. During the process of learning how to reinvent yourself, you will have to pull yourself away from your past things, comfort zones, habits, and roles. Yes, it is difficult and you will question your self-worth, so it’s important to adopt in self-care to maintain positive thinking and keep your mind and body healthy as you face the challenges that come in your path.

If sometimes you want space then mention self-care by participating in a hobby you enjoy and spending time with your love ones. Taking some time to walk in nature. Practice love, kindness and meditation. Find what works for you and what helps you feel like your real self as you want a perfect version of you. To Reinvent Yourself, you have to sure that you are equipped with all the solutions that you are facing. Develop your strengths. This will provide valuable information on how you deal with certain situations. If you have this information, you will be able to manage difficulties more efficiently.

International Youth Day - Prerna Rathod

Every year on 12th August,” United Nations International Youth Day” is celebrated  to recognize
efforts of the world’s youth in enhancing global society. The main aim is to promote different ways to encourage them in becoming more active in making positive contributions towards society.

The youth of the age group between 15 to 24 years fall in this category. Youth form one-sixth of the population of the world. Young people proposed the idea for International Youth Day in 1991. In 1998, a resolution was passed to recognize 12th August as International Youth Day. It was later endorsed by the UN General Assembly in 1999. The first International Youth Day was observed in 2000.

It is aimed to bring everyone’s attention to youth issues all over the world. The slogans and themes used during the previous years are as follows – Mental Health (2014), Youth and Civic Engagement (2015), The Road to 2030- Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production (2016), Youth Building Peace (2017), Safe Spaces for Youth (2018), Transforming Education (2019).

On this day different activities and events are held. For example, conferences are held where different speakers from various countries and fields encourage and motivate youth. Debates and discussions and award ceremonies are also held. In 2018 and 2019 International Youth Day was hosted by Indian Youth Café, Chennai. The event has its own speciality in empowering the youth.

For 2020, the theme is “Youth Engagement for Global Action”. It aims to highlight different ways of engagement of young people at the local, national and global levels and enrich multilateral institutions and processes, as well as draw lessons on how their representation and engagement in formal institutional politics can be enhanced. The government also wants help from youth in helping to create awareness among people regarding Covid-19. This will help to save all people especially the youth in being victims to Covid-19.

Humility and Appreciation - Prerna Rathod

Humility is an ornament of a good human personality. It is the best quality of a humble man.
All great men & celebrities of this world are adorned with this quality i.e., humility. Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Mother Teresa, Swami Vivekananda are live examples of a humble person. Due to this quality, they have achieved all goals of life and society without war and non-violence and are remembered for the work they have done for the society.

Appreciation goes hand in hand with humility. A humble person always appreciates the good qualities of the other person and never fails to praise them. This act of them reinforces the opposite person to appreciate him & his humility in return. So mind it, where there is humility, there is appreciation also. Both these qualities are the two sides of a coin and go hand in hand.

Lord Rama is a unique example to explain this. Rama was so humble that he happily ate the tasted berries offered by Shabri without any grudges. Thus, Rama’s humility is appreciated by all of us until today.

In return, Lord Rama appreciated the love & faith of Shabri. Her humility touched his heart & without giving a second thought he appreciated her act & ate the tasted remnants of the berries.

These both qualities are important for an Educator. An educator must appreciate a child’s work even if it is not the best work of the class. This will motivate the child to do his /her work sincerely and one day he/she will produce the best work in the class.

Finally, we can say where there is humility; appreciation resides there and vice versa.

The Ear Specialists

The children in the class are made to listen carefully to the teacher’s lecture and follow instructions, but do you think the student has listened to you? Aren’t we nurturing their minds to the right direction? No, for the kid’s ear hears what it just wants to hear.

If you want to be a good leader it is necessary to hear the unheard. A teacher needs to inculcate in the student to hear from his inner ear. A student will only be able to understand and be successful when he hears what is unheard. Teachers need to prepare their lessons in an exciting and informal way that the students comprehend and discover the unheard. Students deeply desire to hear that their teachers believe in them, recognize and explain their purpose and want to know who really they are. If students get an answer to these questions then they discover the unheard.
A teacher needs to motivate, encourage his student in a positive perspective. An Educator needs to educate both the heart and mind of his student and then the possibilities are endless.

The Ear Specialist

In the context of the classroom when we talk about the children, as a teacher in the classroom when a teacher explains the topics he/she is used to listening answers to the topics, according to his/her view. But a smart teacher is always aware of thoughts of all students and always tries to listen to minor points from the student. Even if a child answers wrong he/she should be corrected and motivated. We should motivate the slow learners as compare to others. It is a human tendency that everyone likes to listen positive about themselves and negative about others. If a bright student answers, we can tell him/her to come and explain the topic in his/her own way so, students will understand that faster when they see their fellow students coming in front. And then they will also like to come and speak in front of the class.

Seeing With New Eyes

When we see a picture we appreciate or dislike it as to our liking. But when we see what is not shown in the picture which is imaginative that is what called “Seeing With New Eyes”. So is the case of the classroom, the students who do their work neatly and corrections are appreciated, but others are not.
An educator must try to see good work done by the slow learners and motivate them to do more. This will increase the confidence of the students and he/she will take more interest to do his/her work and will slowly become good in his/her work. But when they are not appreciated it creates a negative impact. An educator should use audio-visual effects while teaching. This helps in learning in a better way.
The students can explore more when more creative and audio-visual work is used while teaching. This will help to increase the student's creativity and they will slowly be able to see beyond the pictures shown and thus develop their think skills. They will develop moral values and it will help them to become good human beings and thus it will be great step to preserve humanity. It is scientifically proven that audio-visual aids leave a more powerful effect on the learners than normal lectures.
An educator just by looking at his class can make out if there is something different in the classroom. He/she can find if any student is disturbed in the class and help him/her by solving the problem. Two words of love and care of an educator will make the student feel much better. Thus everyone must be able to see beyond the picture and try to help the students in every possible way and face the world with courage.

Guide, Encourage, and Motivate!

Parental Pressure: A Virus For The Child
“Is Your Child Ready to Face the World?” by Dr. Anupam Sibal is an outstanding book, which deals with the qualities and skills that are necessary for both parents and teachers to build a strong relationship with a child. With changing times, the emergence of a generation gap between parents and their children is natural. This book has effectively touched upon a range of qualities that can help us approach a child, communicate with him, and instil these qualities in him.

This book consists of eighteen qualities which, I think, are necessary for a child preparing to face the world. If a teacher wants her child to imbibe these qualities, she too needs to change herself first. A teacher is a second parent to the child while he or she is at school. Her first task is to absorb these qualities herself so that she can set a good example in front of her students. Students always look upon their teachers as role models so it is necessary for them to change first.

The book has inspired me greatly. The qualities and values elaborated upon in the book can help us teachers in moulding our students in a way that makes them adept at facing challenges and obstacles in pursuit of success. This book has been a great learning experience for me and I am absolutely sure that this will make my students' life worth living.

I remember my student Ajaydeep, who was a brilliant student. She was good in academics, acting, sports, drawing, etc. She was great in every field! After looking at her results, her parents thought of getting her promoted. This double promotion affected her a lot. As she had missed an entire year's coursework, she could not understand many of the concepts that were covered in her missed year. Due to this, she could not perform well. In Mathematics, she barely managed to pass in her First Term examination. This put her under pressure. She started keeping to herself, stopped eating her brunch, and started losing weight. At first, I couldn't understand why such a brilliant student had changed so much. I called her one day and tried to find the reason behind it. She burst into tears and narrated her story. At the time, I consoled her and sent her back. Later, I called her parents to school and made them realize their mistake of pressurizing their child. I made them see how the pressure of double promotion had led to this situation. I also made them understand that they need to let her set her own goals and avoid letting the pressure of competition get to their child. The parents promised not to pressurize their child anymore.

After that I called Ajaydeep and told her to not worry about marks. I asked her to put in her best in the areas she felt she was confident and strong in. After some days she became her original self again. The same lively and ever-smiling child that she once was! Teachers need to guide, encourage and motivate their students so that they can overcome the challenges in life easily.
