Simplicity and Trust - Welham Boys' School

Simplicity

What is Simplicity: Simplicity is a state of being simple (Uncomplicated or Uncompounded) *.

How is Simplicity of things Identified: In essence, anything that is plain, natural and easy to understand is simple. Like everything in life, Simplicity is relative and depends on the recipient's views or perceptions of the recipient(s).

The following six key attributes help in generalising criteria to identify Simplicity in any creation.
1. Reduction (Should not contain any non-essential clutter)
2. Organization (Should be very well organized, in appropriate sequence)
3. Affordances (Should meet expectations of target audience)
4. Tangibility (Should be useful/helpful)
5. Intuitiveness (Should be self-explanatory, easy to navigate or understand)
6. Familiarity (Should be familiar/relatable)

Why is Simplicity Important: Simplicity focuses on what is essential and eliminates clutter. That gives time and energy back to focus on other vital things in life. In today's world, simple living has become a social responsibility. Less consumption helps eliminate waste, improves the sustainability of our planet and helps divert resources toward those who need them most.

"Live simply so that others may simply live" - Mahatma Gandhi.

Why is it challenging to create Simplicity:

"I did not have time to write a short letter, so I ended up writing a long one ☺" – Mark Twain.

All natural beings are made simple at the core. Our experiences, perceptions and environmental factors create a clutter of mind that obscures Simplicity.

Striving for Simplicity is ultimately a matter of focus; focus on what is essential to the subject (a process being established, a topic being taught in the classroom, a product being manufactured, a software program being developed) and clearing clutter.

Eliminating any type of clutter (Physical or Mental) requires focus and practice. Simplification involves a lot of hard work, patience and thinking. In general, the following steps help in simplifying any problem or situation:
1. Write down the problem in a language that is easy to understand
2. Break the problem into smaller parts
3. Engage with experts to understand complexities and eliminate them
4. Re-Imagine the situation / Rearrange / Reorganize

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" - Leonardo da Vinci.

Things I will carry out in a class.

1. Understand children's definition and perspective of Simplicity

2. Carry out an exercise to pick a topic (e.g. How a computer works?).
a. Explain it simplistically. Have children come up with their explanation of the topic
b. Conduct feedback sessions.
c. Summarize learning from the exercise

Trust

What is Trust: Trust is the willingness of one party (the trustor) to become vulnerable to another party  (the trustee) on the presumption that the trustee will act in ways that benefit the trustor.

"Trust is the new currency of our interdependent, collaborative world." - Stephen Covey.

Why do we need Trust: Trust is the glue of life. It's the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It's the foundational principle that holds all relationships. We have survived and progressed as species because we can trust and reciprocate.

By nature, every human is born trusting. As we mature, we learn to build and identify trustworthiness through our experiences and instincts.

In all our relationships, integrity plays an essential part in trust building. Operating with integrity fosters mutual goodwill and support, which leads to an improved sense of spirit, mutual loyalty, cooperativeness, shared responsibility and resilience. All these qualities lead to more mutually satisfying and enduring relationships.

"Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody's going to know whether you did it or not" – Oprah Winfrey.

How to build Student-Teacher Trust: Trust and mutual respect are crucial elements in creating a positive classroom environment. Students trusting in the ability and intent of teachers can outperform their ability and progress well in studies and life in general. At the same time, teachers who believe in students' sincerity feel rewarded and are inspired to go out of their way to provide better education.

Trust is earned by honesty, positive intent, strong competencies, and a track record of results.

Building trust is a process which requires consistency and practice. Some of the tips to build this mutual trust and  respect are

1. Honor each other's time, be open in giving / receiving feedback
2. Engage students at their levels, respect their talents and interests
3. Always accept student differences, and listen to them actively
4. Remember to complete your commitments consistently

"Trust is built on telling the truth, not telling people what they want to hear" – Simon Sinek.

Classroom Trust Building Exercise:
1. Build class bonding – Talk about each person's family, areas of interest and hopes for the future.
2. Make a calendar of important dates for class (including students and teachers). Celebrate important milestones/dates. Appreciate each other's company and accomplishments as a group.
3. Conduct periodic meetings with students to review progress and provide & receive feedback 4. Conduct one or more team-building exercises with the class. **

Thoughtfulness and Understanding - Bharti Rao

Thoughtfulness is the quality when we think about others and react and act accordingly to discover and invent. With thoughtfulness comes understanding, compassion and kindness for others. If we are thoughtful about others we will listen to them attentively, understand them and try to solve their problems.

A person who is thoughtful is mostly empathetic, sympathetic, kind, compassionate etc. A thoughtful educator will always create a healthy and positive environment by listening to them and guiding them so that they are able to think and achieve success. We come across many instances when we see kids being thoughtful with peers and animals. Thoughtfulness helps you to develop better understanding for others.

Understanding is the feeling when we are sympathetically aware of other’s feelings, tolerant towards them and forgive them. Mutual understanding is a must in school. As Educators we must understand our students and in return the students need to concentrate, listen and think deeply. When students work together in teams a mutual understanding is developed and they patiently with tolerance listen to each other to complete their task.

We see that many children show their thoughtfulness by extending a helping hand to their mothers at home, grandparents, teachers or their friends. They understand others' pain and help them if they are hurt or in pain. They also help their classmates to complete their work.  The root of disputes and conflicts is lack of understanding in people. If we are tolerant and develop better communication than we can have positive relationships.

“A little thought and a little kindness are often worth more than a great deal of money”- John Ruskin

Responsibility and Cooperation - Shivani Rao

Cooperation refers to the process of working together to the same end. It can be seen in
the action of people working together in order to achieve results or helping each other out to achieve a common end.

Importance of Cooperation in individual lives:
— Allows people and group to work together to achieve a common goal or derive mutual benefits.
— Allows participants to exchange valuable information that helps both sides to improve their knowledge bases.
— The task can be completed on time.
-Uses of resources in an efficient manner.

Educators should introduce cooperative learning within the classroom in order to improve the whole student learning experience. Students should develop and enhance this value in order to succeed in a future professional environment.

Cooperation should be taught from childhood. Students in early age can be moulded in any shape. This value in the child not only helps to gain respect in society but also helps to develop leadership qualities.

Someone who possesses leadership qualities that means he has the ability to take responsibility. Cooperation builds leadership and leadership comes with a package of responsibility, togetherness, love, patience, unity, and many more.

Responsibility is the state or fact of having a duty to deal with something or of having control over someone. Responsibility includes honesty, respect, fairness, accountability, and courage.

Children easily get distracted from the right track. We must see that they should take responsibility for their thoughts, feelings, words and actions and should correct it timely. They should stop blaming and complaining and make themselves happy and live in the present moment.

Examples of Cooperation and Responsibility can be seen during this pandemic period where we all are united and cooperating with the government. Doctors, police officers, sweepers have taken the responsibility to remove Covid-19  from our country.

Responsibility and Cooperation - Nikita Rajpurohit

Responsibility is a duty or obligation to do something. Responsible people are the ones that many look up to. They are the people who are considered role models for others to follow and are even known for their examples of responsibility followed by others. They are always the ones who help out. This quality helps people to find a fondness and trustworthiness in them towards those who are responsible.  Whether you are working, going to school, doing housework, or babysitting, being responsible is something that cannot be avoided in your day to day life. Some see the most responsible people as the first ones to call when emergencies happen while others know that a responsible person can be counted without having to be asked to be responsible.

Cooperation refers to the action or process of working together for the same goal. We cannot have cooperation without the development of sympathy. Sympathy depends upon the capacity of an individual to imagine himself in the place of another, particularly when the other person is in difficulties.  Cooperation is possible only when there is like-mindedness, the similarity of purpose, mutual understanding, mutual helpfulness and selfless attitude.

Both are two different terms, for sure, but they play a major role between a student-teacher life. So that student could be responsible for his task, be disciplined and cooperate with everyone in his surrounding. Responsibility of a student is to utilize the time he is spending in the school, gain knowledge, maintain discipline and follow what he is instructed by a teacher. At the same time, a teacher is responsible for giving the best clarification to the students about academics and their life as well. Students are curious because these are the growing years of life and they want to know everything they are still not familiar with. Here comes the role of responsibility of a teacher.

If a student is responsible, it makes it easy for a teacher to give the new- forming brain a good shape. And when a teacher is responsible, it automatically makes it easier for students to shape themselves into a better person every day. Besides responsibility, teachers and students must cooperate with each other or else difficulties might arise for both of them. If a teacher is non- cooperative, students might not feel so comfortable to share their questions/ opinions with him/her. On the other hand, if a student doesn't cooperate with the teacher, it might be difficult for a teacher to bring him on track. Therefore, responsibility and cooperation both are necessary terms in a student-teacher life.

Honest and Respect - Prakash Dangi

A person should not only respect himself but also other people. A person should give positive remarks to their friends. They should not put them down, by saying negative things about them. Respecting others is very important if you want to be respected. What respect means to me. When I am at work I expect the other employees to show a little bit of respect towards me. Generally speaking, it is a positive feeling or action expressed towards something.

Furthermore, showing respect is a sign of ethical behaviour. This is an essential requirement of living in a society. The relationship between students and teachers should be one of mutual respect. Students should listen to the teacher and try their best in the class. Teachers, on the other hand, need to do their best to give their students a quality education and respect them as individuals.

'Honesty is the Best Policy' is a very famous proverb however most effective to be followed in everyone’s life. An honest person always occupies an important place in the hearts of the people. He who deals honesty always receives respect and esteem. Honesty shows your self-acceptance and self-worth in life. The Peace of mind and heart is achieved when we are honest in our work. A peaceful mind gives satisfaction and happiness. I also believe that being honest is not that much easy. It’s very hard and difficult to adopt it practically. At last, I believe that when a person adopts honesty he is respected in every platform.

Honesty and Respect - Nikita Rajpurohit

Honesty and Respect play an important role in everyone's life and it is a character which is visible with open eyes like an open book. Having considered as an honest person by society is one of the best compliments one can dream of in his/her life. A person who is honest will always be respected by all. An honest person enjoys a light-headed feeling because he doesn't feel the stress and tension of lying.

Ultimately, Honesty enhances the reputation of a person. He/She enjoys enormous respect in society, school, college, etc. Furthermore, a truthful person can easily generate trust with other people. If a person is honestly dedicated towards his work or profession, his work will be admired by all and he will earn respect. "Honesty makes us glow and Respect makes us bow down"

Often children try to get away from trouble by telling lies, therefore, the duty of parents and teachers is to make them understand that Honesty is the best policy. Students should be taught that harsh truth, no matter how hurtful, is far better than the white lies that profoundly impact the character and create a bad perception in society. Instead of rebuking a child for dishonesty, what an educator can do is to regularly interact with them about the values of honesty in the social sphere. Honesty is the bedrock on which relationship stands and mutual trust, as well as respect, can be built.

Respect is earned by our actions and it is important to remember that respect is a two-way street. If you respect a person, then the person also respects you.  The three vital things to have respect for is, respect oneself, respect for others and respect for belongings. Students should be taught to respect, which will enable them to exist well in human life. Without

respect and honesty, it's very difficult to make friends or to build a successful career.

Happiness and Tolerance: Jitendra Suthar

Having a feel of joy whenever we come across any situation we like the most is happiness. As a point from the student’s side, a student is always keen to find happiness in his own friend circle in the school. Sometimes a school stands as the only point of happiness in a student’s life. At home kids always miss a friend like them. Right starting from the day of admission in the school, a child has the tendency to find friends with the same way of thinking; this comes up with better understanding between each other and builds moral support.

Happiness in class can only come when an educator acts as a mentor to kids beyond the relations of a teacher and student. When this happens, each and every child will try to attend the class of that teacher.

Experience matters a lot. All the educators have gone through the same situations in their schooling days. It becomes very easy for educators to make out how they can make kids understand right or wrong. Many times there are small fights in the classroom, a tough time for an educator to settle down the situation. For this, a teacher should try to make each and every child comfortable with each other, like they can start sharing their desk with each and every kid. Daily there should be shuffling in the class and kids should be asked to site with the new face daily.

At the same time, there should be a lesson where students should be allowed to share both the good and bad sides of the bench partner. This will help them in building mutual understanding between them; they will get to know their own qualities (good and bad) and they can improve. This process can make our kids tolerant and if a child is tolerant, He will always stay happy.
