Affection vs. Rejection: Understanding Their Impact Through Examples - Chandrani Singh

Affection and rejection are two powerful emotional experiences that shape how we feel, behave, and interact with others. Both play crucial roles in our lives, affecting our relationships, self-esteem, and overall well-being.

Affection is the feeling of love, care, and warmth that we show or receive from others. It can be expressed through kind words, gentle touch, thoughtful actions, or simply spending time together. I would like to give an example of my own life. This incident was about 4 years ago. There was a boy whom I taught in class 4th and now he was in class 11th. He was a hostler and very frequently some of the hostlers came to me and shared many of the things with me. So this guy whom I am talking about came to me and showed me some bruises on his arms.

When I asked him about it he started crying and said ma'am the warden has beaten me. I asked him why don't tell your parents about it, and he said that ma'am it would be of no use because his parents would blame him only. He wanted to share it with someone so he came to me. He knew that I wouldn't be able to help him but still, he wanted to talk to me. I think somewhere in his life he got that affection from me, which he wanted from his parents. I wanted to give a hug to the boy but I couldn't, since he was in class 11th. But as I talked to him, he felt quite relieved. This act of affection not only comforts the child but also reassures them that they are loved and supported no matter what.

Rejection, on the other hand, is the feeling of being pushed away or excluded. It can be expressed through harsh words, neglect, or ignoring someone’s needs or feelings. As I gave the example above if the boy had not been rejected by his parents, then his feelings would have been different. Over time, this repeated rejection can make you feel unwanted or undervalued, potentially leading to feelings of loneliness or insecurity.

The Impact:
Affection nurtures positive emotions, fosters close relationships, and builds a sense of security and self-worth. When we experience affection, we feel valued, loved, and accepted, which encourages us to be open and trusting with others.

Rejection, however, can have the opposite effect. It can lead to feelings of sadness, anger, and isolation. Repeated experiences of rejection can harm self-esteem, making it harder to form and maintain healthy relationships.

Conclusion:
Understanding the difference between affection and rejection and how they influence our emotions is crucial. By being mindful of how we treat others, we can choose to express affection, fostering positive connections and contributing to a more supportive and caring environment. Recognizing the impact of rejection helps us be more empathetic and encourages us to be kinder in our interactions, ensuring that we don’t inadvertently harm those around us.

Quality And Love - Rishona Chopra

"If a judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid." - Albert Einstein

We all have a beautiful quality about us. Something that makes us happy and makes us feel alive. There may be 1 bad thing about us, but there are 10 good things about us too. We all have a quality that we can always enjoy. Writing makes me feel alive, and my rate refreshes my mind.

Today let us close our eyes and think, what do we wish to do that we could do all day? Reading, writing, playing an instrument, drawing, painting, or even doing nothing is quality. I have noticed that most people can't stay still and want to do something, even if I can't. So if you can stay still doing nothing for even 15 minutes. I say that's beautiful quality!

Take out a day to do whatever you want without any hesitation!

Apart from these hobbies, it is essential to have God's seven qualities in us:
Wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.

Quality in a classroom defines the quality of work. Whatever we set to do - whether it is to write an essay or to do a few questions we should put our heart and soul into it by writing in clear and neat handwriting while paying attention to what we write instead of copying it. The quality of our work defines us.

Love is an emotion where you feel selfless, and this bond cannot be explained better by just saying love. For me, my mother is the most loving person and the person I truly love. I have no reason to love her. I simply love her because she is she. I love her for who she is, and I just can't find a reason why I love her. It's just a bond I can't explain.

The bond between a teacher and students is unique between a guru and a student. When I first met my new teachers, I was timid in front of them. Till the first week, I was a completely unknown child to all teachers. Soon, when our teacher showed us her passion for teaching, we showed our passion for learning. I slowly opened up to teachers, and now I never feel shy to express something in front of my guru.

Quality and Love - Reah Sikand

Love and Quality are two great values or feelings that a child must have. Children understand the language of love better than any adult. When a child feels secure and loves, he performs much better in class and grows up to be a lovely human being. All living things need love and care. I had a child in class 3 who would score fewer marks in English, I would often hear teachers getting upset with her. I decided to help her out in her free time. I was patient and loving towards her. I was surprised to know that she had done much better in English papers that year. When a child is scared of their teacher or parent, they get uncomfortable to ask questions and do not perform their best. On the other hand, when an adult is loving, kids feel more comfortable communicating with them. Love is something every individual craves for.

Quality in the class depends on the potential of each child. Every kid has its own capabilities, and the last thing we adults should do is compare the kids to each other. In my class, I ask the kids to help each other in their studies. This makes their bond and friendship stronger.

With age, I have realised the importance of quality over quantity. Like I tell the kids, when you do something, give it your hundred per cent or don’t do it. Sometimes when I enter class, the kids are not in the mood to study and o respect that, and we have a fun class or watch some interesting videos on the screen.

We as teachers teach the kids various things, but the kids are the best teachers for us as well.

If a child does a shoddy job with her classwork, I will sit with that kid alone and try and understand the reason for it, maybe I did not teach the topic well, and she found it difficult to do her homework, and I will sit with the kid and teach her the topic one on one where she can freely tell me what her doubts are.

In a situation where boys and girls are together, there is bound to be a romantic relationship, which is normal. We need to normalise such situations. I would talk to the student and tell them it’s absolutely fine, but certain limits should not be crossed; otherwise, that could lead to many problems for the kid.

Hope and Friendship - Visionary JMMS

Hope is that value in life that never lets you stop believing.

When the journey of life is going through the dark tunnel, hope is that spark of light at the end, which keeps you moving forward despite the hardships. It helps you to believe that there is a new morning after a dark night.

Friendship is a quite strong bond. It is a beautiful relationship that you have chosen. Friends are the ones who help, correct, encourage, motivate, inspire, influence and guide you. They have the magic to fill happiness in the darkest of times.

"A friend knows the song in my heart and sings it to me when my memory fails ".
- Donna Roberts

This is a true story of a teacher. Her friends came into her life when she had lost all hopes; they believed in her and helped her in her dream journey. The friends became the light of hope in her life's dark phase and remained by her side. She eventually became what she always wanted to be. The story tells us, let your hopes and not your hurts shape your future.

Hope and Friendship - Aspiration JMMS

Brad Henry once said, " a good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination and instil a love for learning."

Hope is the greatest happiness for all and a great remedy for all despair and grief. It is hoped that we can wait for tomorrow and is only the commodity that is never-ending and is omnipresent.

A friend in need is a friend indeed a very famous quote heard by everyone. Friendship is the greatest bond that everyone should have in their lives; they are friends who are with us in our thick and thin situations.

We present true incidents on hope and friendship. This highlights the bond and a light of hope that a teacher bestows on the child.

The World of Books - Punita Chouhan

One word we should never forget that’s “BOOK"
Once finding a friend in the book
One will never feel lonely.
And this bond remains till the end of life.
Books are great friends of mine
Who share multiple notions.
Hence the deal with everyone’s emotions
They deal with anger and grief but never complain.
Books take us to the places unexplored
It amazes me, reveals the identity of people unknown.
It gives us delight and enlightens our life.
They are the boats which sail us to further places.
On a  journey of imagination and fairyland.

The greatest of the books of our mythology
Gives us answers, of the questions untold
My friendship with them is ever unbreakable.
As we share a peaceful conversation
I promise to keep you beside me
No matter where and how I am.

Friendship - Bharti Rao

Friendship is a relationship which cannot be described by words and is beyond description.
Friendship Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of August month.  In 1935, a tradition of dedicating a day in honour of friends began in the US. Gradually Friendship Day gained popularity and various countries including India also celebrate this day.

When the whole world turns its back towards you, then it is the friend who will be always at your side. Everybody goes through some difficult phases in life. During those times you need a shoulder to cry on. Friends can give exactly that. They will be there to listen to your nonsense talks and still acknowledge whatever you are saying to lighten your heart.

Just imagine life without friends. It would be boring. Friends are those who will always make fun, make you laugh and bring you out of depression. They are those who inspire us, guide us and motivate us. In history, we get examples of many friendship stories, which show the importance of friend in life. From the stories of Krishna and Arjun, Ram and Sugreev, Krishna and Sudama, Duryodhan and Karn it shows that friends have always been a person who helps and supports us.

Everything came to a standstill due to the pandemic situation. COVID 19 separated each other but friends couldn’t be separated for friendship is a bond between two hearts. Meeting our friends physically gives a different joy altogether, however in these difficult times, we could easily manage by looking at their faces using video calls. We can stay together just like normal life, without physical touch.  Those who love reading got their best buddies during COVID 19, which are books. Books not only give us knowledge but they also give us good company. It has been rightly said by John Evelyn ‘Friendship is the golden thread that ties the heart of all the world.’

Unity and Caring - Ajay Vijayvargi

` A family that dines together stays together. ` - how wonderfully the unity of a family is
defined, in today's scenario when each one of us we work round the clock, mostly online for hours together. Even when we are at home or at a party we all are busy fiddling our fingers on our mobiles. When we with our family to dine or watch televisions in our living room we are isolated even when we are together in a room.

We are not united, but if we care for each other we will be together in all thick and thins – we will be united which in turn will protect us from all odds, we share our thoughts, feelings and care for each other. This feeling of being united will help the family in surviving ups and downs of life with courage and power. This feeling of being united at the workplace will help us in collaboration and teamwork yielding better results.

This feeling will only develop when we start caring for each other, compassionate, helping each other in times of need. It increases our self-esteem, self-worth and develops better social connections. If we care for someone, a small gift or holding hands, keeping a hand on his shoulder shows our togetherness with him in tough times, this will reduce his stress and will develop a strong bond of love giving a feeling of being united.

These types of gestures in a classroom by a teacher to his students will develop a strong bond of unity and show that we care for each other.

Hope and Friendship - Nikita Rajpurohit

Hope is the probability of a wish happening true. Every day we hope for hell a lot of
things, and at the same time, we lose hope for some of those things. Example:- We sleep daily by putting on an alarm with the hope of waking up the next day and making the best use of the other day, but what if someday, our breaths don't cooperate with our hopes and we never wake up for the next day. Hope you got a basic idea of how hope emerges and gets lost.

Every task we perform in our life lies behind hope. We eat with the hope of healthy physique, drink water with hope for proper hydration, vocal health and many more. In fact, even we breathe with a hope of the next breath of life. So we can say that everything is surrounded by hope in some manner.

Friendship, according to me, is a term that could never be defined in a statement. It is a feeling, it is a trust, it is a bond, it is something that's not created through blood relation only, it is something that you can rely on when you find yourself left with nothing. It is a term enough to build a strong bond within two souls. Even love takes a second place in hearts but friendship is always a top priority. It doesn't have a daily conversation and gets stronger and stronger with time.

And somewhere between both hope and friendship lies a deep connection. When you become friends with someone, it automatically creates a hope in your subconscious brain that this person now, is the person I could rely on and we both can be interdependent on each other. And when the hope is fulfilled, it ends up in a greater bond of a strong friendship. So hope and friendship are the two important values which give the inspiration to live our lives in the best possible way. Make your hope and friendship strong.

Hope and Friendship - Innovators BHIS

A friend is hope when life is a low…a friend is a place when you have nowhere to go…”

Rhea and Cecilia were inseparable friends since the days they joined their new school. Their bond of friendship was much talked about in school. They actually set an example for everyone as to how friendship could help one sail through all problems with ease.

Both of them had the same choice of food, dresses…they would share everything in life. Cecilia and Rhea’s friendship spilt over post their school hours too and they spent a lot of time together studying, singing, dancing together at either of their homes whenever they would get time.

Their parents too were happy with this bond they shared because they felt that both these girls had a very fulfilling relationship…they wouldn’t let go of each other’s hand at the time of distress. Each was ready to fish the other out of any trouble that would ever come up. Thus the days flew past happily and both these vibrant teenagers passed out with flying colours in their ICSE exams.

Now came a difficult choice for them both, since Rhea, aspiring to be an aeronautical engineer had to pursue Science and Cecilia wanting to start up her own business chain, wanted to pursue Commerce. Both these girls decided to stay on in the same school but were put in the sections of their individual choices. They had no other option but to accept it and so they did. Each of them assured each other that their bond of friendship was matured enough to sustain the distance between classrooms.

By the end of Grade XI, they started realising that they had become so busy with their own fields of study that they could barely get time with each other. Their free time of singing and dancing together had now been replaced by the various different tuition that they had to attend. To top this up, Rhea, the more outgoing one among the two had been chosen as the school Head Girl. She now had to shoulder various responsibilities and be involved in a lot more activities in school, thus, not able to spend time with Cecilia even during breaks. Both of them had started feeling distanced from each other. They could no longer confide in each other, even found it difficult to communicate with each other…and with a little more time stopped talking to each other totally. This distancing in their friendship affected both their well being and reflected in their low scores as well. She instilled in them the hope that nothing was lost….the hope that true friendship can never be broken, it can only strengthen with time. The girls believed in their teacher and realised their mistake and promised never to let go of the hope of friendship which will make them sail through all adversities in life.

Hope & Friendship - Harmony BHIS

Friendship, a boon to life
“A friend gives hope when life is low, a friend is a place when you have nowhere to go, a friend is a mirror, and you can see yourself just by looking at him.” –the thought reverberated in his mind, he read it somewhere.

It was during monsoon in Mumbai. Though he had come from Hyderabad in the month of May when you could feel the fierce sun spread its might every nook and corner of this metropolitan city. During monsoon, contrast scenario can be witnessed. Mother Nature soothes all her elements with her gentle shower and spreads green carpets all over.

“Rohan”, he heard the voice from the threshold of his room. He was sitting at the study table putting his back towards the door. He looked back and saw his mother holding a plate of snacks for him.
“Yes, mother” he stood up to take the plate from her hand.
Archana, his mother, came forward, “I wanted to know something from you, Rohan.” She continued, “After you recovered from your illness, I could see some changes in you. Always you are lost in your own world and you don’t have any interest to attend the school. May I know why it is so?” Archana looked at her son anxiously.

Eventually, Rohan shared everything with his mother. He was completely dejected, lost his enthusiasm to speak. But somehow his mother could make out his each and every word. It happened like this, as he had to cover many topics done during his absenteeism, he asked for the help of his peers. But his friends were not willing to help him at all. He requested everyone but in vain. Gradually, he started feeling lonely in the class. He was repenting on his haughty temperament towards his friends. He had understood the importance of ‘Friendship’ when he was in need. He understood that friendship is a relationship of mutual affections between people. Friendship is the strongest interpersonal bond that needs trust, love, care, empathy, forgiveness and mutual understanding to flourish. He was lucky to have many caring and loving friends around but he didn't value them. He hoped to go back in time and settle everything but that's not possible.
Archana told him while leaving his room, “Request your class teacher, she will help you undoubtedly. Keep hope, everything will be smooth.”

Once again he was in his deep thought.

Rohan took admission in the midterm of the session. He had shifted from another city so everything was new to him, but he managed to adjust to the changes soon. He comes from a very well to do family. Every day he used to take fancy stationery items as well as food items to impress his peers. He was good in studies as well as in sports, so very soon he became the popular face of the school. All these appreciations and limelight turned him into a self-conceited boy. Soon it started reflecting in his behaviour. He became rude and insensitive towards his classmates. He often insulted them. Though his peers were not revolting visibly, they started distancing from him. But Rohan paid no heed to the situation and continued harassing his friends in one way or other.

Once because of his fever, he was not able to attend his school for almost three weeks. When he went back to school, he realized the transition that had already been taken place in him and in the class.
Then he was not going to think further on this issue as he had a headache since afternoon, it was seven o’clock in the evening when he went to bed with a storybook. He tried to divert his mind, his mother was right; he would approach his class teacher the next day.

At that moment, the only ray of hope for him to get out of this situation was his teacher. So he gathered all his courage the next day and went to his teacher and narrated the entire incidents. He did not forget to apologize for his misbehaviour.

The following day, the teacher decided to have a group discussion on how positive thinking and forgiveness would give us new hope in life. Through the ideas generated by the students themselves, the teacher made them understand the agony of Rohan and the mistake they were going to do. Finally, the entire class understood the power of kindness and forgiveness and also the need for a good friend in their life. They all promised the teacher that they would be the light of hope for each other and would take care of each other.

Now Rohan is well accepted by everyone and now he is a changed person who is always ready to help others.

Friends are those who will pick you up when no one even noticed you have fallen.

Honesty & Respect - Rahul Kr. Thakur

Photo from The Fabindia School archives
Honesty- The quality of being honest.

Honesty means doing things that are morally right. When one is honest, it means they’re truthful, trustworthy, sincere, loyal and fair.
Honesty is one of the most important attributes in life. It gives you peace of mind where you’re not troubled by the lies you tell. By being honest, people will always trust and respect you. Besides, honesty strengthens bonds and creates more meaningful connections in relationships.

You really want to play with a friend's toy at your house so you slip the toy in your backpack and figure you'll put it back tomorrow.

Honest answer: Taking something that is not yours is morally wrong and dishonest. Asking to borrow the toy is honest.

Respect-The condition of being honoured (esteemed or respected or well regarded) It is the sense of worth or personal value that you attach to someone.

Yes, it is important that first you should respect yourself then you will understand the things why respect is important. Respecting yourself means giving and defining your own worth and value as a human being. Think about this: if you do not respect yourself, it will be more difficult for you to respect anyone else. So it all begins with self-respect.

Respect is one of mankind’s most noble sentiments. The highest levels of respect are always earned – never given. This is true of self-respect as well as respect for others. Before granting the highest level of self-respect or respect for others, make sure the person is worthy of honour.

“Respect for ourselves guides our morals;
respect for others guides our manners.”

- Rahul Kr. Thakur, Sportify Coach @ The Fabindia School
