Is Your Child Ready to Face the World?

Reflection as a Student

The book- Is Your Child Ready to Face the World?

Has changed the way I look at success. The stories taught me that dreams, compassion, purpose, resilience, and happiness are not just lessons—they are life skills. I realised that true education is about becoming a kind, confident, and responsible human being, not just scoring marks.

 As a teacher

This book reaffirmed that our greatest responsibility is not only to educate minds but also to shape character. Every story reminds us that children need values, empathy, courage, and purpose to thrive in the real world. Our role is to inspire them to become capable individuals who make a positive difference in society.

Reading about Fear and Courage

As a teacher, I am deeply reminded by the chapter that education is not merely about academic achievement but about helping students discover their potential, confidence, and purpose in life. Roma's journey shows that every child, whether a topper or a last-ranker, carries dreams and abilities that can flourish when guided with encouragement and belief. I am particularly inspired by how Roma addressed her students’ fear of public speaking by creating opportunities for participation, teamwork, and self-expression rather than simply delivering lectures. Her approach reflects the true role of a teacher as a mentor who motivates learners to overcome their fears, develop leadership qualities, and believe in themselves.
The assembly presentation demonstrates that students learn best when they are actively involved, trusted with responsibilities, and allowed to make mistakes without fear of judgment.

The message that “dreaming big” and striving to become good human beings matter more than examination scores resonates strongly with my own philosophy of teaching.

This chapter on fear and courage reinforces my belief that effective teaching is rooted in empathy, encouragement, and the ability to recognise hidden potential in every learner. As a teacher, I feel responsible not only for imparting knowledge but also for nurturing confidence, resilience, and aspirations so that students can transform their dreams into reality and contribute positively to society.

Rekha Sharma, Sunbeam School Mau

Today’s lesson gave me a very important message that every child must succeed. Every student is different and has their own strengths. Some students learn quickly, while others need a little more time and support. As teachers, we should encourage all children and help them move forward with confidence. Success is not only about earning good marks; it is also about becoming a good, confident person. When we trust our students and motivate them, they begin to believe in themselves. This reflection reminded me that no child should be left behind, and every child deserves a chance to succeed.

A Small Step Toward Productive Failure - Gurdeep Kaur

Like many of us, I’ve always leaned on direct instruction. It feels efficient, structured, and safe. But after last Saturday’s Masterclass session, I felt compelled to step out of that comfort zone and try something new.

I was about to teach the business entity principle in Accountancy—something I’ve always explained directly. This time, I didn’t. I gave my students a case study—“Aarav and His Design Shop”—with various transactions, and asked them to make decisions. No definitions. No instructions. Just space to explore and think.

They discussed, debated, questioned, and gradually arrived at the understanding that personal and business finances should not be mixed. They didn’t just learn the principle—they experienced why it matters.

I don’t yet know how much of the concept has stuck. And I’ll admit—I’m still figuring out what productive failure truly means (we’re not through the book yet!). But what I do know is this:

My students were alive in that moment—curious, engaged, and confident in their ability to make sense of something new.

I believe our job isn’t to deliver perfect lessons, but to create imperfect moments where learning can emerge on its own— messy, real, and meaningful.

Affection vs. Rejection (in a Teacher’s Heart)- Mizan Ali

A teacher’s affection can shape a child’s world, while rejection can break it. “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire,” said W.B. Yeats, and that fire burns brighter when fueled by kindness.

A teacher’s love is not merely in lessons taught but in warmth shared. A gentle smile, a patient ear, or a word of encouragement can transform a hesitant child into a confident learner. A child who feels valued will dare to dream, to explore, and to grow. “A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning,” says Brad Henry.

Yet, when rejection seeps into the classroom—through harsh words, indifference, or favoritism—it leaves scars. A child ignored feels invisible, hesitant to raise their hand, their heart heavy with self-doubt. “The greatest pain in life is not to be rejected, but to be ignored,” as someone once said.

No child should feel unwanted in a space meant to nurture them. Every teacher holds the power to be a beacon of light. Let that light shine through affection, not rejection—for in every child’s heart lies the potential to bloom with love, not wither in neglect.

My Classroom - Anvesha Rana

Teachers help students to find things that they have lost…
sometimes it's their book, bottle or bag but most of the time
it is the child's confidence, patience, courage and smile.

If I were an educator and had the opportunity to deal with students from diverse backgrounds, I would first understand that a classroom is like a garden blooming with flowers. Flowers that are of all different shapes and sizes, colours and fragrances. In my class, each student would be treated like a flower, nurtured with care, watered with love and planted with firmness. I only vision this garden right now, but I hope to visit it one day; oozing with so much learning, education, laughter and love.

Nothing is perfect, but our imperfections are what make us. Imagine how monotonous a classroom would be without the troublemakers, the backbenchers and the ones at the root cause of the chaos. They are the imperfections that make you imperfect. Similarly, perfection will not be the key in my class, but accepting your flaws and trying your best will be one of the core principles. So no flower will be perfect; all of them will enter the gates of the raw garden only to learn how to appreciate themselves, just the way they are.

I don't want perfect flowers, but I like happy flowers, so if a fearful student or an impatient learner enters my class. I will try my best to make them grow.

A fearful student will be afraid of others, but more than that, they will lack trust in themselves. Fear is nothing more than an obstacle in the way of progress. In overcoming our fears, we can move forward more robust and wiser within ourselves. First, I will try to understand my student's fear of making friends, coming to school or interacting with teachers. Then I will try to counsel them. Also, I will open up with the student to increase their confidence. As a teacher, I will be frank towards them, like regularly cracking jokes or talking about simple everyday things. This way, I will develop a comfort and fun level with the student, and then I would ask them to do the same with the other kids and maybe with every new person they meet.

I hope that I will be able to pull the fearful student out of his pot and help him grow into a beautiful, lush green tree.

If an impatient student ever enters my class, I would make them learn patience and appreciation. Most impatient people are attention seekers and think that they are the best. So humility will also be an integral value for the impatient student. I would try to interact with the impatient student separately and give them exercises to increase patience. As a teacher, I would demonstrate how patience helps in life and why it is important to inspire them to walk onto the path of patience.

I hope that through all this, I will be able to ameliorate patience in this young learner.

I would love to be a teacher because a teacher is not only an educator but a learner, a counsellor, a parent, an entertainer and a confidant.

My Teachers' Role In Preparing Me For The Future - Laavanyaa Joshi

When I first started out in Welham in the year 2015, I was a naive 12-year-old girl. To suddenly leave my parents, my house and to shift and acclimatize to a totally different environment seemed almost impossible. I was by nature, a shy and timid girl. To be surrounded by strangers, 24/7 was not an easy task. The only sense of comfort was to realise I was not alone. Seventy other little girls, who had absolutely no idea as to what they were doing, were right beside me.

Slowly I started to break out of my shell. I attempted things which I never had done before. I started climbing up the ladder of my personal growth. My teachers acknowledged my strong points and also my weak points. They opened up opportunities to boost up my social and personal development. Staying next to my friends and teachers thorough out my teenage years made them feel like family. The people who felt like strangers, I now recognise as family. The faculty at Welham made me realise my worth. They inspired me every day. They taught me how to be confident but did not ignore my wrongdoings.

My teachers have helped me mould my character and have always emphasized on the morals of honesty. Every time I cribbed or whined about doing my own work in school, I became responsible and independent. Every time I got scolded in school, I learnt to accept criticism. Every time I was punished for turning up late for a class or an event, I learnt to respect and value time. My teachers made me realise that excellent academic scores were not everything. They taught me integrity. They helped me evolve into an empathetic and humane person. They taught me the value of commitment. Over the years, I have come to realise that I am no more than a shy girl.

Welham and my teachers have helped me evolve into a young confident girl. I have come to realise my privileges and learnt to make the most out of every opportunity. I think after the help and encouragement I have received over the years, I am ready to face the world by myself. Though there is no age when a person stops learning from mistakes and experiences, I think I am ready to see for myself as to where I stand in society. I have learnt to acknowledge my personal power. I see myself trying to contribute and give back to society more than I have received from it. I have not only learnt to trust myself and my intuition but also learnt to accept criticism, whether it be positive or negative.

Staying away from home for the last 5 years, I have realised that sometimes to achieve something, we have to walk out of our comfort zone and tread on an unknown path. Not always would every path guarantee me success but will surely contribute to my experiences which will prepare me to face the world.

Happiness comes from within - Sharmila Vijayvargi

We every day come across many quotes on happiness. But, we actually don't know what happiness is.
It is different for everyone. Today, staying home is making me happy but it is so possible that tomorrow going out and enjoying it might make me happy. At times, we keep running behind things thinking that having it will make me happy but when we achieve it, our level of happiness changes! Hence, it is very important to decide what we want in life. Material things will get us happiness for a limited time and so it is the inner satisfaction that will make us happy. It is important to realize what we want and once we know that, happiness would follow.

Let us understand this through an example: Having a big house, a fancy car is something we all aim for! But tomorrow if we don't have time to enjoy any of it or have a family to live with, these objects will just be there as our asset in the financial books but in reality, we will be all alone. So, that's where we know that it is family which makes us happy and the satisfaction derived from it, will make us more confident and happier, even if we don't own a big house or car!!

Being happy makes one more efficient as we synergies all our efforts towards delivering the best. It is a virtue. Happy people also make their surroundings relaxed and work as a catalyst in reducing stress. Thus, avoiding the unnecessary hustle and rat race and trying to be content knowing what is important is a ladder to being happy and once this inner happiness is achieved, there's no stopping success!

Stay happy always!

Unity and Caring - Shivani Rao

Unity refers to accepting and appreciating each other and their contributions. When people are united,
their focus is to work towards a common goal instead of satisfying their own selfish motives. Unity protects us from all kinds of evil. We, people, should help each other and together fight and face the evil and negative things. When we stand together only then we get freedom from all kinds of negativity.

The feeling of having united with others makes a person so powerful and confident that no person or no situation can defeat or harm. Unity creates a sense of belonging and increases well-being for all. We have heard a story of a farmer who has four sons, and they were unable to break the bundle of sticks and another story of birds that were trapped in a net by Fowler, and by being united they got success in flying together along with the net. "United we stand, Divided we fall".

We got independence after years of struggling only because we all were united and our focus was in a common direction. Our country is a place where many communities, different castes, different religions are available but having unity among all in a common thought of being Indians. Unity is an important value that can't be taught in a classroom but can be experienced by playing in a field. When we work as a team and play, we will definitely win.

Caring for an individual means connecting with them from our heart. Actively listening and being emotionally present, as well as providing support, are important aspects of care. When we are unitedly working for a common goal, caring is shown for each other.  A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle rather it lightens the room more. Similarly caring for each other will develop a beautiful bond between people, it will cost nothing. Also, it will create a sense of belonging. When you care for others, others will give you the same love and care. Your true wealth is not measured by money and property. True wealth is created by caring for your loved ones, by creating good friends and relationships.

Treat everyone around you with your ethics, not with theirs. Treat the people the way you want to be treated by them. What you give is what you will receive. Caring is not only important for our loved ones but equally important for animals, for plants, for the equipment you use.

Responsibility and Cooperation - Richa Solanki

When we get responsibility we become more confident in ourselves. We can also control the situation. It develops respect for other people and also self-respect and we will feel freedom. In childhood, we don't know what is our responsibility but when we grow up, then we understand, that a lot of things in our lives depend on our actions and we are responsible for the act or task we do.

The responsibility helps to develop such qualities as freedom and confidence in us and we should also teach this value to students. When we are responsible for something, we should give our best efforts to complete that and this will improve our self and our self-control will help us to become more organized and responsible in life.
Making your own decision means setting goals and how to reach there. It means we should be responsible for all our words, actions and even thoughts. The possibility to promise something and to do it on time makes the person reliable. If the person does not want to take any responsibility, he could not face difficult situations in life. It is very difficult to be a responsible person, but you will get the respect of other people if you are responsible and people will corporate with you if you are responsible. Cooperation is connected with responsibility. It makes our task easier because the duties of the tasks are distributed to team members. People who cooperate can do great things, cooperation is very useful in the modern world because people cooperate with each other to do the work in a systematic way. A cooperative society is very useful because it builds trust and makes you responsible for society and our environment. If we work with the cooperation we can achieve everything Richa Solanki The Fabindia School rsi@fabinidiaschools.in

Humility and Appreciation - Monika Vaishnav

Humility is the state of being humble in life. Humility develops respect for others and makes us more polite and genuine in life. It is an ability to give up pride and still maintain our dignity. Humility is the foundation of leadership, if the leader is not humble, he wouldn't listen to others, hence the people will neither cooperate nor support him and there will be complexity in coordination.

We must help children to develop humility in themselves. We should teach them to understand themselves as well as others. We should never humiliate any child,  it develops hatred. We should teach them to apologize when they are wrong. We should train them on how to respond when they disagree with something and how to keep their point of view politely with dignity.

Appreciation is admiring or praising someone's great work. It is a token of motivation for doing good work. It inspires people to keep doing something good in life. Appreciation develops hope in us. It gives strength and helps someone who is not good at something to accept challenges and make a big difference in life. Every small work of an individual should be appreciated. If someone's effort is not appreciated or ignored, that person may lose his enthusiasm and will not give his best.

It is also important to understand that people who are appreciated should not be overly confident or proudly, we should be humble, otherwise our pride shall create obstacles on the way to success.

Appreciation is a feeling that fills our mind and heart with joy, honour and gives the energy to keep doing good deeds in life. So, we must remember to appreciate even small work or effort done by the students. It helps them to improve in the area where the child is not good at and to enhance the skills where they are good at.

Responsibility and Cooperation - Bloom BHIS

Volunteering is not a choice, it's a responsibility.

Hello everyone, today I wish to share a story about responsibility and co-operation based on an incident which took place in our school during the Academic Year 2019-20.

In the course of an Academic Year, we organize various inter-house competitions such as Inter-house Debate, Elocution, JAM, Doodle Making, Street Play among others. We also had a competition - “What’s the Good Word?” for the Secondary Section. We started with Grade 9, followed by Grade 8 and ended with Grade 6 and 7.

As I was put in charge of this competition, I listed down the steps involved in executing the event. I took the help of students to whom I could delegate various tasks, thereby enabling them to take on responsibilities. One such responsibility was to ensure practice and prepare the students of Grade 6 and 7. For this I wanted the students of higher grades to be involved, and hence I selected Avi and Dev from Grade 9. Both Avi and Dev were excited but at the same time were sceptical about their assigned responsibility as they had never done any thing remotely similar in the past.
I explained to them the nature of my expectations, which they diligently took note of. Soon, they initiated the selection process of participating students, collected content from various sources, had them verified from relevant teachers and prepared their juniors. Often I found them leading a practice session, assigning homework and taking tests. Before long, the participants were thoroughly prepared for the competition.
Finally, D Day arrived. All of us were excited but Avi and Dev were nervous as they fidgeted like mother hens! All their hard work would be judged. The six and seven graders participated with confidence, and finally, the result was declared. Guess what! The ones trained by Avi and Dev managed to bag the 1st position.
The happiness of their faces was a treat to see! Their efforts had paid off. In training their juniors, they had transformed into more confident individuals. In many ways, this was their reward. Avi and Dev had learnt that working in co-operation with others, taking up responsibilities and working towards executing them was the only way to achieve the desired goal.

Now, I see the radiance of confidence and leadership in Avi and Dev. They are always ready to take up new challenges. It is gratifying to participate in grooming the leaders and trendsetters of tomorrow.

We all do better when we work together. Our differences do matter, but our common humanity matters more.

Courage and Patience - Optimizer BHIS

Every teacher has a series of stories to share, so do I. My first teaching job was that of a primary teacher, though teaching was not new to me. I have been teaching for a very long time. I taught math and science to 4th and 5th graders then. When I went to this particular group of 4th graders to take my math class, everyone seemed happy to see me. There were greetings all around except Aman. I went up and greeted him as he looked down, ignoring me. I started teaching and solved a few questions on the board and while kids were writing in their notebooks I got the time to look into each student's work. Everyone was quick in writing down solved questions from the board, except  Aman.

Later I inquired about him and his behaviour. His class teacher informed me that he was a first-generation learner and had a learning disability. That very day during the dispersal I saw  Aman scribbling on the board with a smile. I got an idea of seeing this. Next day, I solved a sum on the board, explained a particular concept and later divided the board, using chalk, into three sections.

I called three students randomly to solve similar questions, every child was excited to solve the sums on the board and awaited their turn, eagerly. I saw Aman writing in his notebook. It was filled with many mistakes.  I corrected them and asked him to write the answer on the board. He hesitated but agreed to copy it from his corrected notebook. I appreciated his work and asked everyone to clap for him. I could see the smile of achievement on his face. After this, we continued doing this every single day. He was appointed the homework monitor. One part of the board had been assigned to him for solving homework answers on the board. Of course for a math teacher to give time for homework solving in class is time-consuming and frustrating. Yet, I was PATIENCE and the whole class co-operated. So I feel in this process of teaching we all learnt the art of PATIENCE.

I could see a drastic change in Aman's behaviour. He began to greet me with a smile whenever I entered the classroom. In fact, he waited for the math class, where he felt like the star of the class. Moreover, he became a happy child, more confident than he was before, and was enthusiastic to come to school. He started showing COURAGE. Every child in the classroom got a chance to solve sums on board, but for  Aman, it became a symbol of his achievement. A permanent column was made on the board for him to solve the sums. He started doing his homework regularly, knowing he had to do it on board every day.

" A little patience can make a timid child courageous".
If you love and care for someone you have to have patience and understand their behaviour. When you do that to bring in some positive change in your students it makes you feel happy and this happiness translates into a more interacting and enthusiastic class.

Self Confidence - Richa Solanki

Self-confidence is the direct pathway to success. People who have a lack of self-confidence, for them it becomes difficult to gain success. They have to build self-confidence and success will follow them eventually.

Confident people believe in themselves and their abilities, they also believe in living life to the full. Self-confidence is a very important part of our lives. Always remember that whatever task is given to us, take up with confidence and it should be with passion and aspiring at success.

Thinking about the fear of failure and avoid taking risks, this makes you confident. People think self-esteem and self-confidence both to be the same. But self-esteem means one's desire and self- confidence is one’s ability to complete the goal that you have to achieve in life.

And always remember never be overconfident because it always put yourself down and often put negative thoughts in mind.

Honesty and Respect - Optimizers SHS

Joy Of Honesty

"Honesty" is the key to happiness and freedom.

Our elders have always taught us to be honest. Here is a short and true story of a girl named Arya who was a very shy, timid and introvert child. She was given a task by her teacher in the class to draw something and write about "HONESTY".
The task was very interesting for the other student, but it seemed, Arya was keen to do it.

The very next day, when the teacher collected the work given on the previous day, it was found that Arya's project was the best in the entire class. At that time, the teacher praised her hard work in front of the whole class. As the class was about to end, Arya came up to the teacher and spoke the truth that the project "HONESTY" was actually prepared by her friend.

By this, the teacher was overjoyed for her courage to come up and speak the truth. She became the role model in the class for her honesty, after which she became happy, loyal, sincere, confident and reliable.

Journey of Respect

Being respected by important people in our lives teaches us how to be respectful towards others. Respect means that we accept others as they are, as our relationship builds feelings of trust, safety and well being. We can show respect by being polite and kind, the value of respect is a part of every day's wisdom. It is difficult or rather impossible to respect others if we don't respect ourselves. As an educator at times, we face challenges of the students being disrespectful and dealing with them becomes a significant problem at times.

When a student is disrespectful to us, we have to be willing to lose the battle and remind ourselves that we will be more effective if we maintain emotional control. We need to stay calm and not react in that particular situation. Receiving respect from others is essential because it helps us to feel safe and express ourselves.

 Respect is earned.
Honesty is appreciated.
Trust is gained.
Loyalty is returned.

Level 1 Educators: Responsibility

Responsibility is the opportunity or ability to act independently and to take a decision without authorization.

We all have different jobs to do in school and we are responsible for our own actions. Our behaviour is our responsibility. We can learn from our teachers and parents, but the decision we make should be of our choice.

First we ourselves should take responsibility because if we do not have the will to change our situation nobody or nothing in the world will do it for you. As a teacher, my responsibility is to teach the children in the best way and work as a team with school staff. We can do much more if we want to. We can take new responsibilities like a new project for the betterment of the school. We can give new projects to the children so that they can learn new things and take responsibility for completing that project. It will help them to develop their self-confidence and motivate them to take responsibilities in future also.

We all have responsibility to make our world a better place. This can be achieved only by working in a team. If a child takes care of his things and completes his work on time, these little acts show he is responsible towards his work. The teacher should give them little tasks to make them responsible and to feel confident.
